Wow what a list and more to come. I did not see any in Texas listed.

None in my area are on that list but I wouldn't be surprised. Both Sears and Kmart just don't have 'it' anymore. The stores aren't nice, the merchandise isn't nice. I can't comment about the prices. There is something about my closest Kmart that makes me uncomfortable. It's right on the strip with everything else (just across from Target) but it feels so trashy inside, as if it were in a bad area but it isn't.

Oh too bad that the Sears on 69th St near Philadelphia is closing. That place has been there forever and had managed to survive through other rounds of closings. On the other hand, I stopped going there long ago as the neighborhood has gotten rough.

I used to love Sears and K-Mart. Now I'd like to go in and redesign them myself. I don't think I'd make them worse.

didn't lose any near me.but only shop sears for applaiances and tools, and think i was in kmart once this year?

i'm surprised the sears near me isn't on the list. kohls and wal mart share the parking lot!

Our KMart is actually pretty nice. The clothing is so much nicer than Walmart. Prettier and nicer "home goods" too.

So far mine has survived the cut. 2 closer ones have closed. I like Kmart.

Susan, as to your Sears, if the store is not a stand-alone building, in a shopping center - there would be a contract to break, and that would cost Sears a bundle to get out of it.
KMarts are mostly single story properties, in low rent shopping centers - cheaper lease to get out of.

Neither of the two Sears stores in this area, although they are ghost towns, are in large Malls - and are not on the list. Mucho bucks to get out of Mall leases.

Sears Holdings is closing stores to get cash flow, and few stores made any money. Their Christmas sales have been described in financials as "catastrophic" losses. They need cash to survive.

I love Craftsman tools and Sears appliances. I just purchased a Craftsman garage door opener. DH picked it up after I paid for it online...he said the store was packed!

Oh that's sad. The K-mart nearest me is on the list. Very sad. I don't shop there much but I do know people who do. They do it for the lay away plan. I think that's a great thing for some people. The Kmart was the first "box" store around here. I think they could have a good thing if they got the right managment and cleaned up the place but it seems they haven't figured that out yet.

I was surprised to see the 69th Street Sears in Upper Darby, PA on the list. That place has been a staple there for as long as I can remember. But, as mentioned above, the area has gone way down hill and I haven't been shopping in that area for a very long time. But, I see our local stores will stay intact - for now.

I think mine in Alexandria will close. I am so sorry because they are honest people and would choose them over Best Buy ( learned to not walk in mine) and the other box stores for electronics. It's not about the price as much as it is about the the employees who give me their best and follow through. I want them to keep their jobs. It is like the falling of America as I grew up and loved it.

My Sears and Kmart aren't on the list. I'm glad Kmart stays because I do buy my flats of annuals there.

I saw 3 in Ca on that list,2 were in the san diego area,and i can't remember where the other was,but none near me.Our sears is in a big mall and k-mart is in a strip mall.I go to our k-mart several times a year,and it's still ok.

That title, "Sears Holdings" would lead one to believe that Sears is the parent company, but such is not the truth.

Originally sears was was primarily a catalog retailer which started in Chicago in the late 1800's and was known as "Sears Roebuck & Co" and in addition to the retail operation they owned "Allstate Insurance" and a 50% share of Whirlpool Appliance Mfg (which accounts for why the majority of all Lady Kenmore Appliances were actually made by Whirlpool.)

In the mid to late 70's Sears also acquired a Stock Brokerage & H.R. Block.

The government then stepped in and declared that Sears was no longer a Retailer, but rather they were a financial group and primarily conducting banking operations with their credit cards, revolving charge accounts, the insurance company, stock brokerage and the tax consultants, so they officially changed the name from "Sears Roebuck & Company" to "Sears Financial Group".

That was the downfall of Sears as we know it. Once they became a financial group, they concentrated on the business of making money, rather than retailing, and the retail operation just became one of their subsidiaries.

It was about that same time that some marketing genuis came up with the idea of making Sears "Brand Central" so now instead of exclusively selling "Lady Kenmore Appliances" they were now selling all the major brands of appliances. The problem with that idea was now instead of maintaining the "Lady Kenmore" name as a high end, high quality appliance, they were relegated to just one of many, so the lady kenmore sales instantly fell off. (I guess the bean counters did not have the good sense to realize that they owned controlling interest in Whirlpool so they could basically get the lady kenmores at a much better price). It was then only a short time until they sold off the majority of their stock in Whirlpool.

As they continued to concentrate on their financial holdings at the expense of the retail operations, the overall general appearance of the Sears Retail stores began to fall off and their retail sales were continually in a decline.

In the mean time, Kmart was originally founded as S.S. Kressgie 5 & 10 cent stores in the late 1800's and they continued to operate under that name until the mid 70's when they moved out of the little downtown 5 & dimes and started building larger stores in the strip malls, which they called Kmart and their corporate Headquarters at Benton Harbor Michigan was renamed "Kmart Holdings"

Somewhere in the late 80's or 90's Sears was near bankruptcy and Kmart was feeling the pinch from Walmart so they bought "Sears Financial Group", in hopes that they could revitalize Sears and broaden their market share by moving up to the more upscale clientele.

Shortly after Kmart acquired Sears Financial Group they changed their name again, this time to "Sears Holdings"

So even though the list officially came out of Sears Holdings, it is in fact Kmart who runs the show..

Now, taking this to the next logical conclusion, according to statistics that were posted on Yahoo about 6 months ago, Malls are seriously on the decline. In fact over 30% of the malls that were built in the early 70's are now either closed or scheduled for closing soon so Sears may not have to make a big payout to close a store in a mall, they may already have advanced notice that the mall itself is on borrowed time.

It has already been reported that most of the malls are giving Sears a substantial break on their rental because the malls feel that having a Sear store attracts a lot of customers to the mall itself.

The KMart in our town was the first chain store to arrive. I know why it's floundering now; customer service is non existent. And there's usually one (or none) of an item on the shelves. They turn on not even half of the lights, which may be good for energy savings, but it does not give the store a very comfortable feeling....especially at night.

Yet just before Christmas a Sears appliance store opened in the next town. Appliances must still sell well.

The people I really feel for is the retirees. Pensions were based on Sears stock.

For years, Sears has had the best appliances (here in my Ont. city). They are also known for their mattresses!

Craftsmen tools used to be the best, I'm not sure that they still are. But I do think Kitchen Aid and Kenmore appliances are not what they used to be.

Ours is in a shopping plaza, but I haven't shopped there for a long time. WalMart took over our KMart stores years ago.

We're getting Target in late 2012. They are taking over some of our Zellers stores. I'm looking forward to Target.

This 'decline and fall' is such a sad story. Sears is now a junk stock, with a CCC rating. Who would ever have thought this when they survived after Montgomery Ward failed?

Of course the current 'leadership' isn't interested in merchandising, just real estate...and that isn't turning around for a while.

It is ironic that the totally stupid Illinois Legislature just gave them a HUGE tax break package to keep the headquarters in Illinois. (Our state representative and senator voted against this, as we instructed.)

Hmmmm I saw yesterday that Iowa was to have two of them shut down. But I didn't follow it to see what citys they were in. I hope not ours. I like to shop there.

I did a lot of shopping there for Christmas because Walmart is soooooo crowded.
