I am no painting expert, but I wonder if you need to use some kind of Primer or paint the whole wall.

What color/how dark was the original wall? Maybe, you did need to prime the new part with the same darkness?

The original walls were ivory. They were primed and painted this same green last year.

The new drywall area around the opening was primed and then given two coats of the green paint. The original walls were given another coat of the same green, too.

You stated he primed and painted the new drywall area but did you prime prior to painting the rest of the wall with the same color? If not that could be the difference and it should be the same primer and even the same paint. I would re do and prime it all with the same exact primer then get however much paint you need and pour it all into a 5 gallon plastic bucket, mix it well then paint it all. Each bucket of paint can be slightly different which is why they mix all the gallon cans together so any slight difference will be eliminated.

Also keep in mind old drywall has years of age and dirt on it in comparison to brand spanking new, hence the need to do a full prime coat on all. I think the only way to completely eliminate a color difference is do it as I suggested. Sometimes we have to live and learn. Or live with it, I would not be able to do that it would just bug me.

It takes 5 coats of paint on the new texture before it stops asorbing it and blends.....I do this ALL the time,,,,:0)

Only paint the new textured area,,,,keep doing it....if your in a hurry you can blow dry in between each coat...

wish I could help...but sure is a pretty shade of green...

Check to see if the texture of the old and new drywall are different. A wall that is smooth is more reflective than a rough one and that may affect the appearance of light colors. The smoother wall will reflect more and the paint may appear a bit lighter.

The installer may finish a drywall by more than one method. One way is to spray on a coating containing sand or sand like particles leaving priming to the painter. It has no primer and only servers to adhere the sand to the wall. The second way, a white paint base primer is mixed with the sand and applied. The resultant finish is self primed and if the color is what the user wants, no further painting is needed. If a different color is desired, no primer is needed since the modified first coat serves as a primer.

However, if the finishing particle size is different between the two walls, this may show even when both walls are painted at the same time with the same paint.

I've never dealt with a wall/room where old plasteredl walls were extended with new a new section of drywall. I've blended in small patches with no problems but as you can see this is an entirely different ball of wax.

RavenCajun - The old walls were thoroughly prepped, dusted, holes filled, washed with TSP/Dirtex, the real tsP, and then rinsed with clear water. It took much longer to prep them than to put on a coat of paint! Then we waited nearly two weeks before all the walls were primed. And painted.

I did not wash the newly drywalled areas around the doorway and new closet. They got a coating of the drywall primer and then regular primer, and the two coats of paint. Three coats for the new opening area shown above.

I agree; it's certainly being a learning opportunity.

- Nicole; you may be on to something with the new blown texture over the new drywall. That section now has three coats of paint.

I am in no hurry at all. The contractor has vanished in mid-job, winter is here, and I've decided to give the new wall area a fresh coat of paint every Saturday for three weeks. If that doesn't lessen the shading, I'll think of something, or just live with it. It is less noticeable at certain times of the day.

- SusanNJf, it's called Key Lime Pie. It truly is yummy, even with this small odd section.

- JemDandy; the new texture was applied to the new drywalled area with a large blower. He feathered it in and the new texture extends out past the lighter areas. Boy did it make a mess! He tried to match the old walls ( built pre-1952 and textured in the late '70s ) but there is a slight difference in the "texture" of the two textures.

The two original bedrooms (den and sewing room) both have the "sand" added to thier original paint. It was easy to paint over that.

New walls, drywall, or more texture is out of the question. I will repaint this area a few times, with at least a week of dry time between coats, and may resort to one more coat of dark primer followed with two last coats of paint. If that doesn't fix the slight "problem" I'll just leave it.

The living room side of this doorway has the same issue but because of the different lighting it a bit less obvious. I won't touch it until I managed the kitchen side.

I just want to say that I love the colour.

I know that new drywall needs a special primer, PCV or PVC, something like that.
