X-Post w/Plumbing Forum

I need some advice about water heaters.

Our house has two 50-gal. Rheem natural gas water heaters, plumbed in tandem. We also have a circulating pump, if that is pertinent. The heaters are 12 years old.

One of the heaters has stopped working and is leaking at the top. The other is working -- giving me time to decide what to do. A plumber is coming today to assess the situation -- and two other minor plumbing woes. Over the phone they say it would be about $2K to replace like for like (two 50-gal.Rheems).

Although our house (2900 sq ft single floor w/basement) has three tubs/showers, we are just two Senior adults. Although I appreciate having the backup second tank...it may be a luxury we don't need.

Any suggestions on sizes, brands, costs? (I don't think we want to switch to tankless heaters.)
