Great gift ideal for coffee drinkers

Starbucks gift cards. This is just great. My son lives in Chicago and he stops at Starbucks on his way to work every day-actually he stops in any time he passes one. I couldn't even begin to tell you what he drinks, some frappicino mocha latte blah blah blah. Anyway the Starbucks site lets you create your own customized gift card-you can choose the background, the person, the clothes they are wearing and even what they are holding in their hands and then you can even put a message on it. All for only $4 and then have it mailed directly to the recipient in a card that lets you type your own message of up to 400 letters I think. This was way cool. In the one that I created for my son in one hand he had his cell phone and in the other a cup of coffee, and in the message bubble I typed 'rise and shine, sonshine-Love Mom'

You can keep the card forever and just put more money on it by going on their site and putting your card number in.

Mind you this is not a promo for Starbucks-I don't even like coffee. I just thought it was the absolute perfect gift for my son and maybe for someone you know too. That someone that is a little difficult to buy for.

Nice gift! An old friend of mine gave all three of us Starbuck gift cards one year for Christmas. They didn't last too long either. We now have a Starbucks right on the way to work, can't afford to buy one too often but do get them every so often. Can't stand their regular coffee but love their white chocolate mochas.

Thanks again everyone. I asked Max if he was happy to be married a couple days ago. He said, "I'm VERY happy." Isn't that all a mom really wants to hear? The kids just received news they got an apt in Sebastopol so they are moving out of San Francisco. Courtney has been accepted to Sonoma State for grad school and Max's plans to go to the middle east was upset by all the unrest. The school recommended he postpone his schooling for a semester, much to our relief. Now I doubt he will leave her next semester. I'm loving having another daughter. I do love my girls! She is a grounding force for Max, who has so much drive he can forget to enjoy the present. I love how much respect they demonstrate toward each other and I'd love to think we had a major influence on showing him what a good marriage looks like. While they are young to be married, Max has always been mature beyond his years and values deep relationships. Robert doesn't think they are too young at all. We all knew he was smitten by her and we certainly approve of her. They are both frugal and have managed to accrue savings accounts - impressive for their age! Courtney's mom is younger - only 4 years older than Aimee. She isn't that close to her parents but loves her grandmother. I think there is a cultural difference that can be somewhat common when people move to another country and raise their children in a different culture than they were raised. She was raised down South, near San Diego. Max will stay in the West until she gets through grad school. He is a bit behind her in school due to his middle east travels. While he attended language school, much of his middle east education doesn't count here but he has built an impressive resume, nevertheless. Max has always wanted to go to grad school in the East, where he can obtain more expertise on the Middle East. I hope to be a cool MIL. LOL! Max says she really loves us and I feel that. The feeling is mutual but I had no doubt Max would pick a good one. They plan to adopt rather than have their own children down the road. This goal is the ultimate compliment to us, since Max is adopted. We'll see about that. The biological need to have a child may surprise them and kick in. Dubs is really sick right now so I'm pretty tied to the house but when all is said and done with him, we intend to visit them in their new place and set up their bedroom as a wedding gift. There is a major peace knowing that Max has a partner in life who is willing to support him. I have no doubt that Max will support her any way he can.

We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

Great thread. My family gave up giving gifts to each other some when we were in our 50s - we all have too much stuff, so we visit each other instead. But I recently married a man whose family is into expensive presents of clothing and jewelry and expensive technology. He, and they, have given me some beautiful things which are not to my taste and I will never use. Some I have been able to exchange - the problem is that I have too much as it is and am trying to have less, not more. So exchanging doesn't work for me. My husband has refused to pass on my suggestions of more practical gifts (like an outdoor compost bin). I am going to try telling my husband that every time he buys me a piece of clothing or jewelry I am going to have to give away something I already have. He knows I am down to what I really love. We are also about to combine households next month, which means paring down even further. Maybe that will make him change his view!

Rita, maybe it's a definitional issue -- because depending on how "true coffee affecionados" or coffee snobs are defined, I might agree with you. There are folks who are very narrow in their view of what the proper, best or right way to do anything is and there are those who approach a cuppa as they would engineering a bridge -- and even then think there as only one proper approach. Totally agree that coffeegeek sees plenty of them. On the other hand, I think there are plenty of people who really enjoy making and drinking quality coffee in different forms and getting there in different ways. Like I said -- cold brew in a Mason jar makes good coffee. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. But a lot of money is spent of coffeemakers that are semi-disposable and not all that great. I don't think super automatic machines are for everyone either, but I don't think that is because they are inferior. Just different. Agree there are some beautiful machines out there I don't have the patience for. I agree with you on the quality grinder also. We had a conical burr grinder and separate machine -- still have the grinder, just in case, but our machine also has one built in. At any rate, until the OP tells more about her fiance's preferences and whether she's just looking for a 2 in one coffee pot, in which case I have heard more praise for the Technivorm than any other, or if she's thinking of something that might replace the espresso pot, etc. too, all of this may be irrelevant. Interesting that Nepresso got several recs here -- not a grind and brew, but it seems to be taking the lead in a market Keurig started.

My son received his Starbucks card yesterday. He loved it! I'm so happy. He is so hard to buy for. Of course he will have the money that I put on the card spent before Christmas. Lucky for him he has a birthday December 30th. I can just go on line and add $50 to card and it's a done deal.

One of my cousins sent me a Starbuck's card last year. Loved it. It is one of the nicest gifts anyone can give me. I can't afford Starbuck's on a regular basis.

My DS can't afford it either. He has been living on his own for 4 years (I never thought he could survive without me)He is 23. He pays his bills fine but has nothing in savings. When I preach to him about saving, he tells me he doesn't have any extra, but when he rattles off his monthly bills to me and what he makes a month he should have plenty to save. So I have to remind him that if he goes to Starbucks every single day that that adds up to about $150 a month. A lot of money where I come from. Kids LOL

When I give a store $5.00 and get a $5.00 certificate in return, they get a benefit.

But I don't see one for me.

I give them a piece of paper that can buy stuff in 3,000 stores in town.

And get a piece of stuff in return that has value in only one.

I tell my clients that if they're giving a benefit, they should get one --- unless they're giving to charity.

Starbucks ain't no charity.

Now ... if they get my $5.00 cash money today ...

... and have to part with the merchandise sometime later (or, maybe, never, if the recipient loses the card) ...

... and give me $6.00 value, then I figure that there's benefit going both ways.

When one makes such a suggestion to stores, they look at you as though you have two heads.

It sounds like a fun idea... except for the $4 charge. I'd rather just get him a giftcard that I don't have to pay any extra money on. Hopefully there won't be a $4 charge everytime you want to put more money on it. I would think if you were buying a gift card from them, they could at least throw in the free personalized card... I guess not... anything to make another buck...

I actually was lucky enough to get one of the last of those shirts from Shirt.Woot. Hubs is getting it as one of his Christmas gifts this year. He hates Starbucks and will love the shirt! :-)

Yeah, he'll only wear it when he's doing yard work, but what the heck...
