My husband had red hair and freckles as a kid. When he was in grade school they called him "howdy Doody." His hair gradually darkened to auburn,but it is now all gray. He's 65. His freckles just faded, tho he still stays out of the sun as much as possible. He got some terrible burns as a kid. Neither of our daughters inheirited his coloring. I was a natural curly haired blonde as a child. My hair has darkened to light brown and gone bone-straight. My two sisters started life as blondes. One is brown like me and the other is still a blonde.

She as she got old and gray hair started, she kept her always colored red. Freckles weren't as dominant as probably makeup covered them.

She decided few years back to go natural, and she's snow white, and does NOT compliment her at all. Skin tone is more suited for her red hair.

That beautiful red hair doesn't stay the same shade just like blond kids rarely stay blond. I haven't seen the majority of my high school classmates in 20 something years. I found a website with pictures of the last reunion. It was kind of hard to look at. Some of those young, 18 year olds I last recognize. My husband pointed out that I don't look the same either. I wouldn't recognize many of them if I passed them on the street. We always give kids credit for changing their looks, but really it's a continual process that happens up until we die.

That's an interesting question, Goldy. It might be their hair grows darker as they get older. We used to spend summers in the NE Georgia mountains and there were lots of kids and teens with red hair but I really don't recall many, if any, adults.

I had a friend in high school with the prettiest red hair and freckles. When the sun hit her hair it looked like she had a golden-red halo. So pretty. This summer we celebrated our 50th class reunion. I wasn't able to go, (it was in Indiana) but she called me and wanted to get together on their way home south of here. So we met at a restaurant just off the interstate for a short time. I recognized her right away. Her hair had turned aa darker brown (with gray in it now of course). I love red hair! Mine used to have a lot of red in it but I'd never be called a red head.

She had a picture of the classmates that attended the reunion and I recognized a lot of them and some of them I would've never known. Wish I could've been there.

My DIL had bright 'Howdy Doody' red hair as a child and is now almost 40 - still has the red hair and doesn't color it. Recently, my Son and she had a baby, born with bright red hair.

My kids were all three born with red hair, but lost most of the red coloring (it's now auburn" as grade schoolers. My childrens' father had bright red hair and kept it until in his 50's, when it turned white.

I was a freckled redhead. Hated it at the time. Sometime in my early teens, the freckles just sorta vanished except on my arms. My hair gradually just got browner, but the reddish tones could always be seen in sunlight. I didn't like the brown, so I started frosting or highlighting my hair so it was mostly blonde. Nowadays I WISH I could find in a bottle the color I used to hate.... never satisfied, are we? If I left it alone now, it would be an ugly gray, NOT a pretty white like many of my friends.

My mother was a brown-eyed, freckled-face (and body) redhead (think Lucy red) from childhood until she died at age 47. When she was getting ready to go out somewhere fancy, she'd say she was going to go "put on her face", and she really meant it. A heavy layer of makeup went on to hide all the freckles.

I ended up with not a single freckle on my body and my hair only has slight reddish highlights.

Hubs had red hair and freckles, with the bluest eyes, when we married. He is 82 now and has white hair and the freckles are gone. Years ago he was napping and as he was waking, he said he could 'feel' that someone was there looking at him. He opened his eyes and there stood a little neighbor girl. she said in awe...you sure got a lot of freckles!
When we were expecting our third baby after 2 dark haired, dark eye boys, I said I wanted a little girl with red hair blue eyes born in April. She was born in April, had blue eyes, and when she was in high school, Clairol took care of the red hair.
