Thanks for sharing. I like reading old headstones but am not fond of actually going to cemeteries that have sunken spots!

Susan, those are really interesting stones. I often wonder the history behind the old ones, and their lives.

Oh my heck! I would love to go on those assignments with you. Thank you for sharing. Where ever we go, I always look for an old cemetery to walk thru and take pictures. I, too, wonder the history of the stones.

I'm going on my 1st request from Grave Finders. I'll be going to 3 different cemeteries, if the weather holds, and it doesn't start raining/snowing.

Thanks, everyone. Leslie, you bring up a good point--I'm afraid I'll have to take a hiatus starting about now because with my Raynaud's it's getting too cold to be walking around taking pictures. On the day I described above, I wore gloves and brought a disposable warmer, but of course the gloves have to come off when using the camera, and the warmer wasn't much help. I have new sores on my hands as a result.

Oh, well, when the snow comes it will be impossible anyway. But it will be something else to look forward to in spring.

I'm working on the rest of the photos I took that day. Here's one I had to share with you. The inscription reads, "Budded on earth to bloom in Heaven." I haven't quite figured out the animal on top.

Have you had a chance to visit the Bonaventure cemetary in Savannah? I'm not a big fan of hanging out with the deceased but that place was, if I dare say, enchanting.

That sure is a beautiful old cemetery.

TT, I've heard of it, but have never been in the vicinity. I'd love to see one or more of those very special cemeteries someday (from this side of the ground).

I agree with Vicki. I would just love to go with you on those assignments. I love looking at the headstones and thinking back to the time when it all happened, and wondering what their lives were like.

And I would love the company! It would be so much fun to do this with a friend. Of course, we'd probably linger so long that it would get too dark to take pictures. :-)

I have always been interested in gravestones. Where do you get assignments, is it a website of people they want to find? Can you please give me more information about this?

Hi Judy - I volunteer at two websites, FindAGrave and Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK).

The assignments consist of a cemetery name and the name(s) of the deceased. Sometimes the cemetery is too far from me, and I turn the assignment down. And sometimes the requested graves don't exist at the cemetery. Records are not always accurate. But even if I don't find the grave I'm looking for, as long as I'm there I photograph numerous gravestones and then upload the pictures to FindAGrave, adding the names of the deceased to their database when necessary. Sometimes I discover that the names are already there, needing photos.

I'm not the only person at the KT doing this. In fact, I started at RAOGK and then heard about FindAGrave here.

Susan, I did my first assignment today. I'd accepted on some (Find A Grave) and went to take the photos today. I lucked out and there was a lady doing some mowing there at the cemetery, and she went into the little building where the records are kept and then rode in the car with me to show me where they were. She was a blessing, because it was cold and windy. I won't take anymore unless it's warmer. That may be in the spring.
Where was that cemetery where the Margaret Hudson was leaning on the other Hudson? My ancestors were Hudsons from Albany, New York.

Leslie, Margaret Hudson's grave is in northeast PA, at Canaan Corners Cemetery. I also photographed Hellen (yes, two L's) Hudson Thompson's gravestone.

I agree about the cold weather. I'm quitting this until spring. It will be one more thing to look forward to when the weather warms up.
