What my dumb husband did

Saturday my husband was standing in the kitchen, chopping something on the cutting board. I asked "What are you doing?" And he said"Cutting up these potatoes that sprouted." What-I didn't buy any potatoes. Those are my crocus bulbs I was going to plant. He had decimated the 24 bulbs I bought. I screamed at him to stop, but he had already chopped up three quarters of them. The next day, Sunday, The Sheepish One helped me plant the few survivors. He did all the digging. We also planted all the cut-up pieces, maybe some of them will survive. He did offer to buy me some more bulbs. Should I take him up on his offer?

Sorry that happened. I was clever enough to put a flower bulb sticky on the container holding my "naked lady" bulbs.

I would take him up on buying some more, and get plenty, and then let him dig the holes for these too!

Oh my. When I read the title of your post I thought "well, that is harsh". After reading what he did, I completely understand!
Yes, absolutely let him buy some new bulbs. (And keep them out of the kitchen!!)

Nepeta is one of the most carefree long blooming plants there is. I think it's worth a try. I have two cats, and used to have another. None of them took any interest in my nepeta at all, even when I stuck it under their noses. We have ferrel cats in our neighborhood too and I have never seen one around my nepeta. If you do happen to have a cat in the neighborhood that wants to eat it or lay in it, at least it probably won't want to poop there too. Nepeta is easy to propagate. If you carefully pull a stem away from the base, it will already have itty bitty roots attached to it and can grow into a good size plant in one season. Just stick the new starts in a shady place for awhile until they get established. It should be very easy to get nepeta in a plant trade or make your own starts if you purchase a plant. Then if you do happen to have new cats hanging around, you won't have spent much and can rip it all out. I don't think you'll need to. In fact there may be some places in your garden where you can use nepeta as a ground cover instead of loose mulch where I suspect you're finding kitty poo. Cats like to scratch in loose soil, sand, or mulch. They're not likely to poop on top of a plant.

Sometime ago before my Larry got the zero radius mower, he'd get toooooooo close to my rose bushes and whenever a limb got ripped off...he'd quitely stick in back as if it was going to live. It really was funny, however, too serious not to have a chat with him. The threat was always a replacement. At least you had good intentions.

I took the advice about turning the other cheek with the hubby. He's a good guy and has certainly done the same for me on other occasions. It helped that when I told him what happened later in the morning he took some of the blame and appologized on his own. I have a feeling that the dogs had an early morning visit from a squirrel or rat in the garden. They are actually very smart dogs and will not normally enter the garden area without permission. It looks like they were running helter skelter through the beds like they might have been chasing something. They'd even flipped over a plastic panel that I'd laid between the raised beds to kill the grass. (Which is why I'm thinking rat). Oh well...what's done is donw. I pulled up most of the squash as it was too far gone. A few plants were salvageble. I got new seeds in the ground and a second lock for the garden gate.

Really you know the answer already. It's right there in what you've written. I think we women, perhaps more than men, don't want to make changes, we don't want to admit that we've made a mistake, that things are bad, that somebody's not our friend. But it's right there in your post: this guy is not your friend. He is bad news, & his kids, unsurprisingly, are bad news. These things don't get better, they get worse. I wish you the best.

that is hysterical lol im sorry, but my ex my now best friend for over 20 years, once started chopping dandelion bulbs for garlic....good thing i thought to look lol so i can honestly say i see where youre coming from sorry i still think its funny, and yes have him get you more bulbs.

I can totally see my DH being "helpful" & doing the same thing. Funny - but not so much when it happens to you. Yes, definitely, take him up on his offer to get more.

Good thing you caught him before he served them for dinner, crocus (Colchicine) is a powerful poison. Hope they all sprout and if not that he buys you more.

Sounds like the story my Mom used to tell. As a young bride, she tried to "help" my father weed his vegetable garden - and ended up pulling all the seedlings!

Ah, well, they're only flower bulbs ...

Not just, "Yes!" but "Hecka, Yes!" You better take him up on his offer.

If my DH pulled such a stunt he'd be planting the survivors, and buying more bulbs, and planting them, and digging a new grden bed, and planting it, and putting in a water feature, and building a stone garden path, and...., and...., and....

It is (or will be at some future point) a funny story, but you know he must pay for the transgression so it's not repeated! LOL

How in the world could bulbs be mistaken for potatoes?Very funny. About 1 year after DH and I were married he decided to make homemade soup. Couldn't find a pot big enough (We had one just didn't look very hard) He found my crock pot and took the ceramic inside out to use as pot. When I can home I found him mopping up soup from the floor, inside of stove and oven. Of course the slow cooker liner cracked and soup went everywhere. He likes to make dinner once a week but the disaster he leaves behind...He uses so many pots and pans to make something simple. He reminds me of the kid on Peanuts that always has a cloud of dust around him, just so messy.
