Do you get your nails done?

I have naturally long nails, so I go in & get them painted with the shellac nail polish every two weeks, get my toes painted to match.I don't do tips or anything like that it is just my natural nails. I asked the nail tech what I needed in the way of files & such & went to Sally's armed with a list & bought the stuff she would be using on my nails & put it in a make up bag along with nail "jewelry" so I don't end up with a nail fungus. She tells me when I need a new file or something else & I go buy it. I do use her polish, but everything else is mine.. In the summer I get a pedicure once a month since I wear sandals most of the time. I drop it to every other month in the winter. I take back what I said about nail tips, I do have one toe that gets a nail tip put on, because I had to have the nail removed permanently, so she "creates" a nail for me..I don't go to one of those Asian places. My nail tech is in the salon where we get our hair done.

I do my own every two weeks. For those of you who like to do your own nails, here's a tip. When you apply each coat start in the middle of your nail with the brush, apply a little pressure to the brush and move it gently down toward the cuticle and let it fill that space and then draw it up toward the tip. Then do the exact same on the left side and right side. This way you'll never have any on your skin, the push down motion lets the polish stay in front of the cuticle and stops any bleeds. With this method, the three stroke I call it, you have a professional look. Be sure to bring the polish to the tips and on the rim of the tips to seal them. When I had my salon I had all my manicurists us this method, cut down the mani and pedi time by half.

I stick evergreen branches in mine. In fact I'll be headed out this weekend to pick the branches. I try to get a variety of evergreens. For December, I add some branches that I spray paint red or silver. In January I add some little snowmen on sticks. I add some hearts for February. I get rid of them in March and put my pansies out. We're in the planning stages of a garage renovation. When we widen the driveway, I'm thinking of some large cedar planters to form the boundary between lawn and driveway. I'm thinking of some dwarf conifers in those planters. I would put annuals around the base in the spring, summer and fall. And for the winter I could decorate like I do my front step containers.

Thanks everyone for telling me I needn't be worried about breaking my nails. And, kateskouros, my nails are pretty darn short, but when my hand slips on something, they tend to break easily down to the quick, which is painful. But, like I said, I am just extremely clumsy and tend to grab at things quickly, resulting in broken nails. I think it is the thought of grabbing something from underneath, rather than through the top of a handle that has me thinking I'll be always breaking them. What I should do is go to a kitchen showroom and try them out, maybe slathering my hands in hand lotion first :)

My opinion on pot fillers. If the pot is too heavy to carry to the stove when the water is cold, I sure don't want to carry it to the sink when the water is boiling. For the effort/cost I don't need one. YMMV, though. I wish I had run my layout by gardenweb members for feedback. I wish I would have thought about a pull out cutting board. I haven't had one for about 30 years and had adapted. Would really like to have one again. The matt white Formica shows every speck of everything! Good, because I can wipe it off right away. Bad because if I haven't wiped it off right away everyone can see it. I live on a gravel road. I rarely use my a/c. Windows are open all the time. The FX stuff I originally planned might have been a better choice. Maybe next time. I do like the look of the white, though. I really hate my upper diagonals but I also hate the blind corner cabs. The more complicated pull down/out doesn't appeal to me. Problem still not solved. I don't like what I have but I don't like the other choices. I thought and thought about this and only came up with the three "I wishes", so all in all, my kitchen turned out pretty good. I am more than delighted to have the peninsula gone and every time I think about my new kitchen I suspect my face has the orgasm expression.

Only once when my daughter took me to a fancy spa as a Mother's Day gift. Loved the whole day...except the mani-pedi .I do not like the nails done. It isn't me. I like to do my own.

I had my first pedi when I went to see my sister a little over a month ago. It was a bonding thing for us, but I swear, if I knew how much it was going to cost, I most probably wouldn't have done it.

Does it cost that much? $50 to get your nails done? My word..and I suppose they need to be redone every 2 weeks or so? If I were inclined to do my nails (I'm not), I'd buy the polish and do the job myself. I'd save a bundle of money that could be used on something else. But nail polish would still be an unnecessary extravagance to me.

My dh would have a cow if I wanted to spend $50 to get my nails done, and so would I.

Absolutely...I have a standing appointment at my spa every 2 weeks for both manicure and pedicure.
The shop has a points plan, and I use the points for an occasional facial and/or full body massage,

Yes, I have been going to the same nail teck for almost 18 years. It is one of those things I do for myself... I don't smoke, or spend alot of money on myself otherwize, but this is something that makes me feel good.. I used to wear acrylics, but now have converted to gel nails..most always just do french,as it always looks neat and clean. I go every 3 weeks, and the cost is $38.00. Well worth it to me.

I'd have a professional manicure more often if one lasted more than a few days! I avoid pedicures; have contracted a fungus three times. I gave up!

I wonder how much money I've saved by doing my own hair and nails. I'm 72. (I do get cut and color every five weeks for $120 with tip.)

How much do y'all pay for manicures? Tip more than 20%?

With the tip I pay $50,00 every two or three weeks that is for what my nail tech calls a polish change. I get the new shellac or gel polish that is set before you get out of the chair. No more messing up a manicure putting your seatbelt on...lol The shellac or gel polish does NOT chip at all. Like Monica said I do it for me. DH encourages me to get them done, especially since I am missing a toenail.

I tip 20%, been going to this spa for over 10 years - always with same techs.
I get gel fingernails because my natural fingernails are very soft , French manicure for my hands, and red for my feet.
And sometimes a 10/15 minute chair massage.

Susan, I am totally low maintenance myself. Would never spend that kind of money on my nails. They are strong , medium long, square filed and look great. I have cut my hair for over 35 years too after a botched job at a prestigious salon. I never have smoked so husband doesn't know how lucky he is to have a low maintenance cheap wife...lol

I do my own b/c I feel it's a waste of $, since I know how to do it myself. While my nails are long, I rarely wear nail polish b/c it just doesn't last but a day looking good...not even clear. On special occasions, I will polish my fingernails. Same with toes, but, I tend to polish them more often in the summer.

"I don't go to one of those Asian places". I found that distasteful and rude. I do go to one of those Asian places for regular pedicures and I love them. They are hardworking and clean, always using good technique and asepsis.

I have never had one either - pedi or mani. I don't think I ever will either. Truth is, after a bath and good hand scrub, I usually bite my nails then rub them on my pants to "file" them down. Sad, I know. Guess, I'll never be invited to be a hand model.

I have never had a mani or pedi. Even if I had the money to have them done I would not. It is not for me.

I have arthritis in my hands & 3 of my nails need to be kept very short, if not the nails split down the middle. This is caused from the arthritis.

Not at all. My ex-dh got me a mani and pedi and facial gift at a spa for my 40th birthday. I hated it. I don't like strangers touching me, and I was bored laying there, in a room with music, supposedly to relaxed. I kept thinking of all the things I could be doing!

I got Mom one for Mother's Day afterwards and she wanted me to go with her, so the 2 of us got mani and pedi. She didn't like it either! LOL

I wondered if anyone would pick up on the Asian comment. I thought it was inappropriate too.

I have pedicures since it's a real PITA to do it myself. I never did until a friend made me go with her about 2 years ago. Now I can't go without. It costs $25 and I tip $5. One of these days I'll try their special foot waxing - I forget what they call it - but it costs $50.

I get a mani/pedi every couple of months. I have my own nails so I'm able to do them myself in between visits to the manicure shop. Although I love the results when I have them done, I think it is boring just sitting there waiting for my nails and toes to get done.

Sorry about the Asian comment but I have had 3 bad experiences with them. I got a fungus from one...took me 6 months for my nail to grow out and be normal again. Another time I went to one, & they used a dremel like tool on my natural nail and it hurt me & damaged my nails. Tried a 3rd time and all the tech did was speak in her native tongue to the tech sitting next to her.. I was paying for attention, not to listen to them talk. I truly feel that if you are in America you should speak English...last time I check it was still the official language of the USA...

I do agree with you about the English language thing. I've had doctors who speak such heavily accented English that I can barely understand them. Clear communication of medical issues is vital. Probably also important, although less so in the skin/nail/hair services work.

On the other hand, I wouldn't limit the problem to *Asians*. Anyone, of any cultural/ethnic background can provide a poor or an excellent service.

I get pedicures once a month during sandal season. In Iowa that means roughly from May or June to September. I have never enjoyed manicures even though I have strong nails. I can't seem to cut my big toe nails and file them smoothly so I get them trimmed at my salon monthly during the non sandal season. It only costs me $10 for the trim, plus tip. I love getting pedicures and wish I could afford massages more regularly. For many years when I worked, I got monthly massages to keep my neck and shoulders from hurting.

I get pedicures about once a month from May to September during sandal season. I like the pampering and it does make my feet look so much better.

I'll do professional manicures randomly during the year - just a basic manicure. Although I love the looks and longevity of a gel or shellac manicure, the last 2 times I had a reaction to the substance so that the nails lifted from the nail bed on over half the nail. I don't do the artificial nails due to the maintenance. I have crummy nails to begin with- thin and bumpy. Try as I might I can't do a decent manicure at home so I keep them trimmed short and kept clean.

I don't pay for them. I do it all myself...I love to design a fun nail..

Last week it was candy corn finger nais ...in a few weeks we will have camo day..we in the office are going pink camo..I will do a nail design for that..

Right now my nails are a pink nude. Toes are a pearly light mauve..

I like some of the others couldn't have people touching my feet...blech...

Does anyone know what the nail salons do for handicapped people wanting a pedicure? I ask because there is no way I could ever get up into the salon chairs to have one done. I do get my fingernails done about once a month...a fill in of the acrylic and new polish.

This is what my nail tech does, she will do the pedicure with you sitting in your wheelchair. She removes the foot soak thinky out of the big chair & soaks your feet. Then she tenderly does the rest of your pedicure sitting on a little stool. She doesn't charge extra or anything like that.

English is the majority language spoken in this country, but it's not 'official '. And please don't insist that it is to the millions of Spanish, Italian, German, Hebrew, Chinese, Korean, and other language speaking CITIZENS of this multi-cultural country.

Narrowmindedness is not flattering on you. Or anyone else, for that matter.

Linda, ask about the pedicures the next time you have your nails done. I'm sure that most salons would be able to accomodate you.

I don't get manicures or pedicures. I like the look of polished nails, but I'm just not willing to spend the money to have it done professionally & I don't have the time or patience to do it at home. I just keep mine shaped & not very long. I use a computer a lot at work & it drives me crazy to hear the sound of nails clicking on a keyboard!

Okay I got my nails done yesterday and I was wrong about the cost. It was only $40.00 with tip for the polish change and nail art, She doesn't charge me for the nail art if I remove the polish myself, which I don't mind doing. Molly helps me remove the shellac. All you need is pure acetone(from Sally's) cotton balls, & tin foil. It takes about an hour to do my nails. That is an hour of pampering for me,

I got a shellac color that changes color as I move my hands. The nail art is a bit of lace with a rhinestone on my ring fingers & big toes...Tony loves it.

I live in the sticks. I don't want to have to go somewhere on a regular basis to get something like that done.

I also don't like people touching me - lol - so that is a factor. I keep my nails pretty short.

I bought a gel nail kit with the LED light. I use just the clear polish and do my own. It lasts at least 2 weeks. Nails always look nice, as long as I get the dirt out from under them - ;)

No. This is just me, and I admit, I am odd. I have a very bad right hand....scarred from two childhood accidents...bad 3rd degree burns that more or less melted my hand, so I have never done anything to attract attention to my hand. Oddly, many people who have known me for years and never noticed it. However, even if it wasn't like that, I wouldn't have a manicure. That is something I can do myself. Same for pedicure....if I want my toenails painted, I can do that. And the real reason is, I don't like people I don't know touching me. Oh, I can get a haircut....I have to do that....but I want in and out as quickly as possible. I don't care how they cut it, just let me get the hell out of that chair. Now, you'd never know that...watching me. I can control my aversion. I am polite and chatty....I can act normal....but it isn't something I enjoy. Having a massage by someone I am not close to, for example....would never happen.

I live in the country, I do country things....my hands are in everything from dirt to poop.....I used to worry about what my hands looked like ...I was pretty much known for my "pretty whore red" nails but I always have done them myself....I have on occasion had them done in a shop just for the fun of it and back in my single days but the procedure is really rough on your real nails so I shy away from doing it...

Honestly, I wasn't offended by the Asian places comment because that is pretty much the way I would describe most of the salons in my town...

Marilyn, I feel the same way about haircuts like you...I go a one woman shop that is mainly for men's and boy's haircuts but she does women's also...it's not a salon...she cuts my hair then I go home and style it...(Lots of times my husband and I go in together). I don't feel "pampered" by people working on me....don't know why.

I love pedicures, particularly, but I very seldom have one. Like some of the others, I don't want to spend the money for something I can handle myself. Plus, I have type 2 diabetes and the doctor really prefers that I do my own foot routine.

I love having my hair washed in a salon as well. Manicures, I'm lukewarm about.

Marilyn, I am kind of the same about massage. I have a gift certificate for an hour long massage (by someone I actually know slightly) that I won at my husband's company picnic last summer. I am still debating about whether to actually try it, or to give it to someone. I think with me, it's because I am overweight, and don't want anyone but my husband touching those spare tires. Seems kind of strange, but I bet a lot of overweight people feel that way.

Remember the story of Brer Rabbit? Well, the nail salon is My Happy Place. I get a manicure almost once a week, sometimes without polish (just buffing). I like to get a pedicure about every 8 weeks or so. Pedi includes a delightful leg massage. I don't drink alcohol or gamble, the Manicure place and drinking coffee are my only vices.

Pekemom said "I don't feel pampered by people working on me" and that is exactly how I feel. I recently had my teeth done. I have beautiful teeth now. But I still hate going to the dentist and I am extremely tense about it.

I am over weight but it doesn't bother me. I think for my age, I look okay.

I was trying to think what would make me feel pampered. Hmmm. That's an interesting thought. A lot of things bring me joy and happiness, including my friends, but I can't think of anything that I consider pampering. Well, my husband built my new mule a new barn. That was pretty nice!

I've "never" had either done professionally. I do my own. Like Marilyn I don't feel pampered being waited on by strangers in "any" capacity.

I even had a massage done professionally once and thought I'd rather "not" do THAT again.....and I love massages.
