Before & After: my HomeDecorators.com rug pics

The rug I posted about recently arrived last week from HomeDecorators.com, and I've been waiting for the rug pad to get here so I could put the rug on the floor. The pile is thick, and I couldn't be happier with the quality. I haven't had a rug in that spot in more than 20 years, so I wasn't sure how I'd like the look. But with the bargain price, I wasn't too worried. I figured if necessary I could always work it into the guest room.

Well, I'm delighted with the way it looks! I hope you'll agree. (If you don't, I'm sure you'll be too polite to say so. LOL)

Here's the Before picture I took yesterday. I had already moved several of the chairs and loaded them up with stuff, so please ignore that part.

Here's an After picture. I flashed it, so the rug (and everything else, including Annie the cat) looks lighter than it does in real life. But you can get a look at the pattern.

This shot looks more realistic on this dark and gloomy day.

Savvy decorators will notice that the rug really should be larger. I knew that when I ordered it, but my options were limited by the other elements in the room, in particular the post between the table and the windows.

I think I scrunched the rug a little when I moved the table onto it. When I have someone here to help, we can lift the table and straighten out the waves. For now, they aren't too bad.

How do you like it? Did anyone else order from that rug sale?

It is kind of annoying how ivillage adds the hyperlinks to our text with advertising... Easy to think someone is a spammer when they might not be. Waaaa hoooo!!!! One of my future projects will be making it look a little more homey, by adding an area rug to my craft area and adding a LARGE exercise mat under that area. I'll be watching thrift shops and flea markets and craigslist and whatnot for cheap stuff. For this project, no, I really didn't purge a ton. In looking through my before pictures when I started, I had estimated I might get rid of no more than 20% of my stuff. I did take about 4 boxes of stuff to goodwill and 1 box of stuff is designated for the habitat for humanity restore store that is opening in our area in a few weeks. We're also taking an old tv to the electronics recycling event in our town this Saturday (nobody on freecycle wanted it). I put our nordictrack ski machine up for sale on craigslist. If it doesn't sell, I'll donate it somewhere. I had three large garbage bags worth of trash and a number of boxes/etc. for recycling. Mostly though, the stuff that was down there just needed to be better organized and put away somewhere. I bought a few more shelving units (I so agree with you on the infrastructure, talley_sue - if you don't have "a place" where you can put things, it all ends up piled on the floor so your choices are purge and/or make storage options!). I lucked out in that my neighbor redid his garage this summer and threw out three 5 shelf shelving units (one matched our basement shelves, one matched our garage shelves, one didn't match at all - I shared that one with a friend who I have been helping with decluttering her basement) and one 2 shelf shelving unit and two 3 shelf shelving units. So that definitely helped me a lot. Those 5 shelf shelving units (24" deep) that I LOVE LOVE LOVE are from Home Depot. They are plastic and just snap together easy peasy. Cost is about $41 each right now, so they definitely aren't cheap. I really strongly prefer them over the metal shelves. They are so much stronger, easier to assemble and move, and nicer looking, in my opinion, unless you can afford the stainless steel restaurant quality shelving. The one caution I would give anyone starting out in buying organizing supplies is to put totes on the shelves at the store before buying. A lot of totes didn't fit well (just barely too wide to put two side by side or just barely too tall to go on shelf). I did also invest in some new totes (on sale at Home Depot for $1-$5), including a bunch of sweater boxes and shoe boxes. I had a mish mash of assorted totes I had picked up over the years. I'm happy to say I was able to use up a large number of those in this project. I am trying to transition as much cardboard into plastic as possible, just in case it ever floods down there. Finally, I put labels on everything, since in my world, out of sight is out of mind and with totes I can't see through, I might never find things again if I hid them all away. :) Eventually we want to finish the basement, but that's a long way off and even when we start, it will likely be done in stages for financial reasons. Thank you again all. Here are a couple more photos when we moved the rug out a bit. We actually want the grey, just couldn't go all grey with the walls since there's some warm tones in kitchen. Now on to throw pillows, throws, window treatments, accessories. Any recommendations??

Thanks carol!! I'm a fast reader & not everyone is so many get annoyed with my long texts. My fiancé the most- lol- it means a lot to have your help! I'll let u know when I post my projects. I'll prob post all at once to give an idea of where I'm at. Then, start with one project. I need a day or so to get it all together. Also, I can't stand to say but I have severe adult adhd & don't take meds for it bc I'm a recovering addict. I have to work with it, which will definitely show ( if it hasn't already- lol ) once I start posting my plans, wishes & projects. It is extremely hard, close to impossible for me to stick to one project & work only on it until it's finished bc then, my mind can't see the whole picture plus, my body won't allow it. It's a terrible character defect I have & challenging when I'm gardening but I do get things completed :) I'll prob name the thread *My Florida garden projects* or something Like that - your right , It does take time & is extremely rewarding :) I enjoy gardening & landscaping! I have no experience or background in it besides my own personal trial n error. I'm just a junkie that loves flowers! 18 mo in par helped me kick the habit & 6 years later gardening plays a big role in keeping me clean! My passion started w/1 thought. My thought was, how come everytime I buy a beautiful flowering plant, I kill it . This thought drove me to learn all I could ab gardening & started my passion. I've learned so much since then & still learning . I live, eat & breath gardening! Its exciting & rewarding. I learn something new everyday. It's a passion I keep close to my heart bc it helps keep me clean & humble on a daily basis & Im thankful for that

I love it.
We have several rugs like that under tables and scattered around the house. I like to mix and match patterns, I guess my taste would be called eclectic which is a nice term for mixed up.

Thanks, everyone! It really does complete the area and warms it up. I love cozy, especially this time of year. After living with this rug for only about an hour, I'm wondering how I managed to keep that area bare all these years......

The rug looks really nice and homey, and kitty looks very comfy. I really love your house, it is so cozy and beautiful. All you need are lots of pine boughs and berries and fat, red candles, and you are all set for Christmas. :o)

i LOVE it...but then i love rugs in general..we put down a cheapy 5x7 for christmas on top of the carpet for color...

i think it warms up your setting 100% !!

I like it(no lie) and I like kitty too. I have three here who look just like her. Rugs make floors look cozy although I do not like wall to wall.

I guess I'm not a savvy decorator (but I knew that). I think it looks just perfect. The room is so inviting - I just want to walk in a share a pot of tea or some wine.

I like it too but have to agree with you that it is too small.Well,you said so yourself! LOL
Personally,I hate rugs under the dining table and especially one that will scoot up under the chair when it is pushed back,then back up to the table.I do agree with everyone else that it is a pretty rug and compliments your floor and decor and makes the room look warmer.If it was my room I would prefer the bare floor.LOL Sorry,that's just me,but my opinion doesn't matter as long as YOU are satisfied.

I think I know what you mean, Patti. When I first moved into this house 35 years ago, my favorite look was Shaker--graceful, but very spare. This is probably why I was content to live without a rug under the table for so long.

My preferences have evolved over the years, and my appreciation for comfort has grown. So the look of the interior is softer and warmer than it used to be. I think it's still "country," though. I hope so, since the house sits on 31 acres of rural land. Not to mention all the money I've sunk into Country Living subscriptions. :-)
