Since I could read when I entered kindergarten, as many children do...I thank my parents for being able to read, and making it my most lasting hobby.

I'm with Monica. I'm always happy to thank a veteran, but I thank my mother for teaching me to read--just as I did with my children.

I taught myself to read before I started school, by "reading" the newspaper comics, starting with Charles Schultz "Peanuts" which was (mostly if not completely) wordless back in the 50's I then went on to regular comics. I knew the alphabet (which my Mom taught me) and I was able to figure out the words which matched the pictures. My first grade teacher was amazed!

I learned to read in school (Germand), but made sure, my girls got introduced to reading (Englisch) very early. both had library cards before their 4th birthday.

I can still remember my joy learning to read. It was such a thrill to think that I wouldn't have to wait for an adult to get a story!

I learned to read using phonics, not 'look/say'. How did others learn?

My grand daughter taught herself to read from books that I had read onto cassette tapes for her older brothers as they were growing up....she is 11 years younger and was born in Japan, but her Nanny still "read" all those books to her. What an investment. I wish every child could to do that for themselves.
