I'm not on dial-up (thank goodness!), but I'm sure links will work fine. They'll open at the same speed as any web browsing she does. And they won't crash her computer.

When I was on dial-up, I could load and view and photos on Photobucket, but it took a long time for things to happen. People would send me huge emails with videos or gifs or oversized photos that weren't jpegged and they would bog me down for 20 or 30 minutes or more, and I couldn't pick or choose which ones I wanted to load, they all loaded, no matter what. Drove me crazy. I would have to ask people to not send me that kind of thing and I know some of them were offended by my request.

What if you burned the photos to a CD and mailed her that?

Has she looked into using a cell phone modem for her internet connection? That's what we switched to. It's more expensive but a lot faster, more like broadband, I love it. We live deep in the woods and don't have a clear shot to the satellite, so couldn't go that direction.

People that have never had to deal with dial-up don't realize how bad it can be. We had to start with it and it is a pain... I finally just had to delete some of them.

Sis is stubborn, and she won't hear of any alternatives. She lost her DH recently, and she's trying very hard to crawl in a hole and be lonely. I want to keep her connected.

I'm on dial up and when people send me pictures or a lot of attachments, it plugs up my email. I have t call tech service and they can unplug my email from their end. I'm not computer savvy so don't know why this happens or what else to do about it. I just asked those who email me not to send pictures or large attachments. Once in a while someone who doesn't email me regularly, sends me pictures and sometimes they do come through. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THESE MACHINES!!!

If you reduce the file size of the pictures - it won't take nearly as long for her to get them in. Don't attach more that two - three at the most. Don't send multiple emails with several attachments either.

To make a picture file size smaller - just go to the picture in the My Pictures folder. Right click on it. One of the choices should be SEND TO - select this and choose email recipient. Then it should ask you what size you want the picture - choose the smallest. It will still be a nice size in the email - just a much smaller FILE size, so it doesn't take nearly as long to come into her email account.

I have a friend who refuses to get DSL (I think she is afraid of it) So she gets no pictures and even a link I send her will take forever to download or open.She doesn't realize how nice it is She has also complained tht it messes up her email and computer.

Dotmom, you can save that call to your isp to free up your email, by shutting your email program down, and going to www.mail2web.com. Type in your email address, and the password for your isp email, and it will bring it all up for you. You can delete what you dont want (you can also look at it first), and save what you want. Close up mail2 web page, and go back and open your email, and it should work just fine. On occasion, it does take a reboot to reset your email in your puter, so if it doesnt work, just reboot and try it again. Good Luck. Cat

Never, ever send a person on dialup an attachment of any kind without first getting their permission. Doing so is beyond rude, it's downright vulgar and is beyond disrespect, it's an attack. When I had dialup a friend had just signed up for broadband and his friends were into forwarding all these stupid joke emails. Then started with not just pictures but videos! He plugged up my email so bad and it would take hours to download all that junk. I finally closed up the account and went to webmail. After that is when I found some of the alternatives.

A nice simple free program called PopPeeper is on my list of essentials and even now that I'm on broadband I still use it. Small lightweight email client basically. It'll check email and you can read and send through it. It will not download any attachments without you telling it to download it. It'll give you a list, tell you the size of the file and you have the choice to download or not. You can also delete the email. You can set it to just get headers or download the whole email if you like. I have it do this, then I open the mail of interest. These days I've cut my spam down significantly so most email is from people I know.

An option for people with pictures is to use something like Irfanview and drop it down in size. Make thumbnails. Most people can see them just fine, you don't need a 10mb file to see a picture. Also the person viewing them in Irfanview can zoom in and make it larger if they want. The quality should be fine.

The problem with dialup these days is with current versions of Windows, you really need broadband to keep your system maintained. I noticed a couple weeks back the Windows Updates were over 50mb and many dialup connections will timeout after 4 hours or so. This causes problems. And then people don't get the updates, don't update virus definitions, assuming they're running antivirus and anti-malware programs and may even run Internet Explorer, (the Swiss Cheese of browser security) and not even have SpywareBlaster loaded. (heavy sigh) And that's disaster waiting to happen.

I've got AT&T for $19.95....actually 3 bucks less than I was paying for dialup. I have no problems with pics, dialup is a PITA for pics!!

Just because one has a land line doesn't mean that DSL is available in the area. I am quite rural, and have a land line phone, but DSL is not available here.

Yes, just because you have a land line does not mean DSL is available nor can I get satellite. I have been on dial up for close to 15 years I think. If I see an email is too big, I just delete. Send a smaller file of a few pictures at a time. That is what I have my girls send me when they send pictures. Seldom can watch a video. Lots of times I can not view all the pictures on the Kitchen Table either. I hope you can send her some pictures she can view.
