I will be turning on the TV at 9 am today. I've never actually been to the parade, tho I lived in NYC for three years and now live on Long Island.

It's so not like the parade I remember watching on TV as a kid. Oh well, it's a tradition so I gotta watch.

Always. I watch to see all the balloons, and always see the arrival of Santa Claus at the end. One year, I even knew 2 people who were IN the parade. I worked with a woman named Betsy and her husband was an executive with Macy's. Their 2 daughters dressed up as clowns and marched in the official parade. I once went to the St Patricks Day parade and it was awful-too crowded and I'm short. I needed to find a bathroom and there were no hotels or stores nearby, so I went into a bar. They insisted I buy a drink, so I bought a Seven Up and left it at the bar. All around terrible experience. Never again.

In my family, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States the Thanksgiving meal always included: A big plate of crudites with onion dip. a crystal platter with black olives, enough for every child to slide a big black olive over each of her fingers. a big roast Turkey, when Grandma was alive it would be a 24 pound bird. with stuffing made with toasted bread cubes, onions, celery and sage and other herbs and chicken broth. gravy made with giblets. Mashed white potatoes made with butter and cream. Sweet potato sliced and baked with lots of butter and with small marshmallows baked on top. Cranberry sauce. One puts this on the turkey. I saw a movie set in England where someone very kindly tried to reproduce a Thanksgiving meal for his American wife and he served raspberry jam with the turkey. a heartfelt sentiment which is more important than food. If I were in England and couldn't find cranberries I'd look for lingonbery jam, for they are a bit closer to cranberries in taste, though the berries are smaller. Brussels Sprouts Rolls or biscuits and butter. and for dessert pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top. Now that I've lived in California for 30 years I've seen many Thanksgivings that had all of the above foods but also had in addition to pumpkin pie, a very rich pie made of pecans. Most of , no- all of the African Americans I've known always have sweet potato pie in lieu of pumpkin pie and in my opinion it is a far superior pie. Nowadays we usually start with a big salad often a Caesar salad as it is simple and the rest of the food is so rich. I love Thanksgiving, it is such a heartwarming holiday with none of the commercial stress of Christmas when one is rushing around trying to find a parking space and then the right gift for every one. Although it takes a large effort to cook a large Thanksgiving meal. I often feel closer to God on Thanksgiving for God is Love, and love is a familiar feeling on that day along with gratitude. Most Thanksgivings I've been at have always had one or two persons who were invited at the last minute when someone found out they had no family locally to go to . I have been that person myself several times when new to an area. Thanks for asking, Lux.

My family (and my husband's also) has always done holiday meals as a late lunch. We've never done dinner. Not sure why, maybe years ago family members had to travel??? Whatever. I really prefer eating around 2:00 and since I now host many of those meals, that's the time I set. Haha! For a big meal such as Thanksgiving, we are really not into appetizers, etc. Too much food. I prefer (and try steer others!) to eat the meal, then relax, visit, walk,etc. and have dessert later. However, if my MIL is here (and she often is), she thinks you should pull the dessert out as soon as the last bite of the meal is eaten. LOL! After eating we like to visit, at least part of us will end up in the sunroom, and as it's often still nice temps here we will spread to the outside area. While I always offer leftovers to take home, most will not eat again before leaving. Hubby and I often wait and have dessert later on rather than another meal.

We eat around 6 pm. I have soup and hummus with vegetables available from lunch to late afternoon for people who come over to help or entertain me while I prepare. I've mentioned this before and highly recommend it, if your group has a good sense of humor: we keep a spreadsheet listing who was in attendance, what was served and how it rated, awards, the entertainment, and suggestions for next year. Part of the entertainment is to re-read the spreadsheets from other years. We've been keeping a written record since 2003. We also keep a spreadsheet for Xmas meals. We have a best dressed and best hair award. Sometimes people win most improved dresser. A best shoe category was suggested, by a person wearing the best shoes, but that didn't get any traction yet.

Never the copycat Macy's parade. I watch the original Thanksgiving parade from Philadephia.

Bits and pieces of it, I watch.

Not like parades when I was growing up.

DS marched in the Macy's parade, when he was in the band in high school.

Did try to watch a bit, all I say was a couple of floats, then ads, couple of ballons, then ads. It seems to have changed
I love the bands, DD use to march in band, so did I, the horses (if any) etc.

I used to watch it with my younger daughter all the time. This year, it was the older daughter, and no parade. But we did get almost everything packed up.

I watched a part of the parade today and was shocked how much of a Japanese influence there was. Now anyone who knows me knows that I love anything Japanese. It's my passion but ... there were some pretty odd Japanese celebrities, characters and floats. I guess if I had young kids I might know who these characters were but I don't so I turned it off and watched a Twilight Zone marathon. :-)

I had it on in the kitchen for a little while this morning and heard something funny. I don't know who said it, but he had a Brooklyn accent. They asked him where he was going after the parade, and he said, "I'm having Thanksgiving dinner with a chick I used to live with. My mother." LOL

Always, wouldn't miss it!! I bet whoever sponsored the float with Kanye West on it regretted that contract! LOL!!

No I do not. I am too busy in my kitchen to want it even turned on. I don't watch much television during the daytime so that doesn't bother me at all.

A few years ago son went to the Thanksgiving Day Parade in Detroit, to blow up his long balloons and twist them into animal shapes, hats, swords, etc. for the kids.

I suppose that he felt that he didn't make enough to make it worthwhile, for he only went once, that I know of.

It was on one of the major downtown streets, and I was sad that on the nearby side streets so many substantial houses, even if rather old, had been empty and allowed to go to wrack and ruin ... some of them had been burned. What a shame.

I heard a while ago that Detroit plans to tear down something like 20,000 houses, as there are so many surplus ones.

I like to watch a parade that shows continuos bands, floats, etc. just like I would see if I were there. Not featured acts and only brief peeks at the marchers.

On my TV the commercials covered the screen in too big a space for too long a time.

The question "Did I watch?" Yes, but I did not give it my full attention.
