Irs horrible out there!!!!!!

Stupid, stinking early snowstorms!

It was still blizzarding when I went to bed last night, wake up and I can barely shove the front door open 4 inches! The dogs didn't want to go out to belly deep snow but had no choice. No paper delivered yet. I didn't expect one. The windows are so full of ice and snow I can only see out one! Wind is still howling and more snow expected.

The newlyweds got a call last night, the best man and his wife were coming thru and having a heck of a time from the sound of it. They'd figured a 2 hour trip from where they were to us. Just the last 42 miles took an hour and a half. They stayed with the kids once they got this far.

DD is supposed to be to work at 6am. She called and they said the highway is solid ice and snow. No travel still advised.

I hear Marie's area got quite a bit of snow too....hope you're warm and dry Marie.

***sigh***

Here is the forecast for today:

Blizzard Warning

Hazardous Weather Outlook

Winter Weather Advisory

Today...Cloudy with scattered snow showers. Areas of considerable blowing and drifting snow throughout today...reducing visibilities to one quarter mile or less at times. Windy. Highs in the upper 20s. Northwest winds 20 to 35 mph. Chance of snow 50 percent.

Its better than yesterdays, but not great.

Tell me again how beautiful ND is would ya? lol

Connie, I feel for you. It's going to be a long time until Spring I afraid. If the sun comes out, it'd help. While we don't have the snow, it's cold and windy.

I know what you are going through. I was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne and remember my first year there. I arrived in early summer and one of the things they did when I first checked in was issue me winter gear. When I told the young Sgt I was an administrative worker and wouldn't be needing that stuff his reply was "Oh yes you will. You obviously have never been in this area of the US when winter hits" Boy was he ever right. First snowstorm dumped something like 16 inches or so. Thank goodness I lived on base or I would never have been able to make it to work.

Oh groaning here on the tax thing. I had a nice excuse, the computer crashed and I had to wait until my son recovered my hard drive. Now he has and I have to get going.... Don't want to. My 5 year old grandgirl is here today. We want to go plant something. My Mom gave me back a big clay strawberry pot I gifted my Grandma with 30 years ago. It's sitting out back rather forlornly, so today is supposed to hit 60 and a nice day to do something. I'm going to let Courtney pick out the flowers she would like and we're going to plant that monster. What memories I have of that and Grandma growing strawberries in it in Long Beach. Oh, my Australian Tree ferns are recovering nicely, what a relief, one was covered timely, the other not and really toasted. I have a nice green frond unfurling up the center of all that "toast":) Leslie

Gorgeous! I see that you have many of those big hosta in containers. Do you repot them frequently or just keep them in the same container for life? I'm starting to keep mine in pots for various reasons and I'm still unsure about how to maintain them long term.

Help fix this roof looks horrible did not turn out like plan

Momto2boys, maybe it's been addressed, but if seeing the apex of the clipped gable rising above the roofline is what's bothering you, raise the grade in the area where it does that as one approaches the house. This will alter the angle of your sight line and drop the apex below the roof line. All you need is inches, so it could be done extremely subtlely, or you could conceivably even create a graceful separation between front garden and street by creating a path approaching between two gentle berms, and raised a little itself as it courses through. Another outside option, one that can fix far larger problems than this, is to strategically place a beautiful tree or trees. There are few front yards so lovely, and very few houses so beautiful, that they wouldn't benefit from this. Perspective can be your friend, helpful in a whole bunch of ways. :)

Advice on Tearing out Horrible Granite

Hmmm. Yeah. The leopard explosion thingy. Somehow, looking at the counter makes me feel itchy and crawly. (Hoping no one here has the same granite by choice, cause I'll feel really bad for saying that!) Prices here can certainly be high high high! But there are some "deals" to be had if you are willing to drive a bit. A name like "Atherton Appliances" makes register sounds go "Ka-ching Ka-ching" in my head. You might try Airport Appliances in Hayward. I recall one GWer actually DROVE to Hayward from SoCal because the deals were so good there! And if you want a Shaw's, try Ashby Plumbing in Berkeley. They had the same low prices that I found online (except you have to add tax). Anyhoo--you didn't ask for shopping/pricing advice, but I thought I'd just throw it out there. :-) francy

Stay warm!

65° for our high today, 40° tonight, 49° tomorrow. They were calling for showers and snow showers for Sunday, but it has changed to just showers.

I hate those early winter storms, they can be killers! My mom had one in October 2006 that killed many of her trees.

I hate to say this, but here in Ontario we're having our Indian Summer here. The temps all week in my backyard have been in the high 60's and low to mid 70's. I'm sure it's going to end very soon, then winter will hit us with a vengeance.

Nodakgal, I'm glad it BARELY missed us. The wind is blowing like crazy, the guys are bringing semi loads of corn and agering them into the big bins. Between the two LOUD sounds my ears are begging for quite already this morning. I will say the sun is shining for a little while before the clouds come back by. Hurray for the sun. Hopefully this system will blow by soon, the sun will be pretty on the snow.

Hope you are all able to stay inside. Also hope the sun comes out and melts the snow away. At least until after Thanksgiving.

I feel for you! Makes you think you are in for a long winter. At least you had decent weather for your daughter's wedding though! Just stay inside and cozy if you can, maybe make a cup of tea.

Oh, and I agree, the IRS is horrible! LOL

I moved from southern ont to Newfoundland in July and have been expecting to see similar weather to ND's,but yesterday it was T-shirt weather and today it's cloudy, but still mild.
But as Lucky gardener said...look out, because when it starts it's relentless.
Since this is our first winter as retirees,at least we'll be able to sit in front of a fire and look out at it...I keep a well stocked pantry,so no worries about running out of basics. Our small town grocery store is practically next door,so we can walk there.
Medical emergencies do give me pause for thought, but I'm told that our emergency road crews are out 24/7 to keep our highways open for our ambulance service.
In spite of all that,I really hate winter once the holidays are over,I want spring.
Wishfull thinking on my part no doubt!

We actually did not get as much as expected. About 3=4 inches but Minot got much more. Dr. appt cancelled, businesses and schools closed. Windy though and about 25=at least it is above and not below.
Thanks for asking Connie and I hope you are safe and warm.
