An amazing 3 story home built by.... 3 pictures

Hornets

I posted this pic a a couple months ago. I had hoped to bring this hornets nest inside to admire after the hornets were done with it. The Bluejays beat me to it. They tore all the covering off to get to the pupas that may have been abandoned when the adult bees died from the cold. Nature at work is amazing. I would love to see this work in time lapse photography.

A work of art..about the size of a basketball

Here it is after the Bluejays were done with it. It is laying on it's top in these pics. It is not nearly as fragile as it looks.

Beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen the inside of a Hornets nest. Thank you for posting it.

Victorian with jettied 3rd story - too ugly?

Sorry Shanghai, i totally disagree and think that IS the original porch dimension. I bet it had awnings all around it - that would surely decrease the top-heaviness. This is the shingle/colonial revival kind of mix that is very popular here in Louisville. painted on color will make it way better. Shingles that naturally weather or are stained will make it near perfect. Think first/second floor one color (of paint or stain), third another - it will suddenly be the hit of the block. Sadly, a google image search brings up all the big New England seaside cottages rather than smaller urban versions, like this. But youll see all of the parts in this house in those big landmark examples from New England. BUT, it really sounds like YOU think its ugly. All the "fixing up" in the world won't ever change that - if you question it at all, move on to another and leave this one for someone who loves it.

Advice please: Inverted house plan when there are 3 stories involved?

The home I am leaving has a garage under the house proper. The main problem with this is that the bedroom above the garage stays on the chilly side in winter. I don't park in the garage (one-car garage with my stained glass center, treadmill and all sorts of yard equipment), and I would rather walk around than take stairs. In snowy/icy weather I do take the stairs, and the two times I've been hobbling on crutches while living here, I've used the stairs instead of walking around and up, so this scenario is not remotely handicapped friendly. But then again a LOT of homes that don't have under-garage access AND/OR aren't inverted... aren't handicapped friendly, either. You're using an elevator, or at least placing one for future use is good. My brother just bought a home on the coast of Florida with the garage underside. In his case, this helped comply with hurricane code... surges can wash through below without impacting the house proper. (We just hope he moves his cars out in time!!!) He lucked out with Tampa Bay doing a "reverse surge."... with the recent hurricane. He does have an elevator. In your case... I didn't plan for either medical emergency (hey, let's break a leg TODAY!), so I'd recommend putting in an elevator now, rather than later. (I sat down on the stairs and moved up one step at a time, just to provide the visual. Easier on stairs than on a sloping lawn...)

Long chandelier for 3-story stairwell

Since you're just now building your steps, at least consider lighting the steps instead of adding a large chandelier or in addition to a chandelier -- then you could choose your chandelier more for decor/ambiance than light. Like the spirals: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/665195807441781174/ Like the Green Luster and Rain Drop. https://www.google.com/search?q=long+spiral+led+lights&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjyx7Sl36DoAhWIct8KHckOAYkQ_AUI-wEoAQ&biw=1366&bih=628#imgrc=8Ps8xjxnw_cyrM Not sure if this comes in a longer spiral or not but I doubt it would blow with the wind and I like the basic idea of it. Would probably like this one even more if it had less horizontal hardware between the light center and the actual LED lights. https://www.beautifulhalo.com/modern-fashion-spiral-suspension-wrought-iron-multi-light-indoor-lighting-fixture-in-white-p-327927.html?currency1=USD&track=PA_G_SUS226&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-Mn2xt2g6AIVx4CfCh085QN9EAkYBCABEgI6efD_BwE

James Carville/Mary Matalin’s NOLA house for sale - $3.3M

Given how the upstairs seems less ornate than the lower level, it would seem they primarily had the downstairs decorated. I think the degree of (original?) detail in the moldings and appliqués really emphasizes the formality. I like the dining room as well. There are a few places where it could be dialed down further. And it is very green. I respect the detail that went into the kitchen reno, with the Lacanche range, the quartzite (?), the Houzz-approved use of drawers only. I even can appreciate the trompe l'oeil on the panels of the twin fridges, that make it seem like there are taller doors there. Though the gilded wood on the hood is an example of where it could be dialed back.

I've never seen anything like that! The size of a basketball??? I wonder how many hornets called it home? Amazing.

That's really neat to be able to see it inside. I've never seen one whole or like this. A real work of art done by an insect. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting or not there is no way I'd ever bring a hornet's nest, occupied or not, into my house. I wouldn't care if it was 200 degrees below zero! My luck they'd be hibernating, just waiting for the 'spring thaw'!

How amazing! If humans were building something like that we'd have to step back numerous times to make sure it's symetrical.

Amazing photos. Reminds me of when the mud hornets built nests in my car . My DH went out with a can of Raid and bravely dispatched t5hem. I was terrified! My daughter then cleaned the car out and got rid of all the mud nests. She drove that car back and forth to school and work over a year. We sold it this past summer for $100.

The first photo is such a graphic example of how art imitates nature.

Fascinating!

I have a large one hanging in my classroom. It was brought in by a student at least 5 years ago. It hangs from a stick. I know it's strong because the air conditioning keeps it swaying gently, and yet it holds together over all these years. I had no idea what it was like inside, so I'm glad to see the picture. Thanks for posting. I've read that hornets are the "first paper makers."
