Cancer Benefit last nite

DH was asked to play in a cancer benefit last nite. There were 4 bands; they weren't paid but were treated like kings.

Tickets were sold, and there was a silent auction. There were 2 quilts that he said were gorgeous and an optometrist donated high-end sunglasses. A one-year membership to a golf club was another gift. There were also $500 gift cards and several other items. They did a 50-50 draw and had $2,000 collected so someone won $1,000.

There was a dinner of spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread, which the public bought, but the bands were given all the food and drinks from the bar they wanted for free. Most of the guys just drank water and pop. Some had a beer afterwards.DH goes through a lot of water when he plays. (he's a non-drinker anyway).

They even had a huge dressing room for the bands, and there were 22 guys.

One band was a doo-wop band, and they wore black pants and shirts with pink ties. DH said the ties were the knitted kind they used to wear in the 80's. Do you think they were home-made?

I'd love to find or have someone make a pink tie for hubby to wear on shows like this. He used his pink drumsticks.

One other band was a tribute band to Blue Rodeo called Blue Radio. They were terrific as well.

Anyway he had a blast, money was raised for cancer....always good! and I had to share. I would love to have seen the quilts, he said they were gorgeous.

I soumds like it was a wonderful, worthy and successful night. Your Hubs is the drummer?......hmm, I always was attracted to the drummer in a band. LOL. How nice that the organizers showed their appreciation for the band's donated talents, that they treated them so well.
Back in the 50's my friend always knitted her Hub's ties. Unfortunately, she is gone.

Jas, it just so happens that my seamstress is delivering hub's tux this morning, I will ask her. . . but it will be a bow tie, is that good or does he wear a regular tie?

Moc, there is a place in Florida that carries the spot spitters. I think they sell retail. We ran a drip irrigation line, attached spaghetti tubing and plugged in the spot spitters, then stuck them into the ground under or between plants. The reason we are familiar with them is because we used them at the nursery to water the tree stock in pots, Upon thinking about it, couldn't see any reason they wouldn't work with drip irrigation hose, tried it and it worked. They deliver a lot more water faster than the regular drip irrigation spinners and drippers. It was definitly a heart wrenching episode! Can you imagine being in they're situation? I saw that in next weeks episode Dr. Green says he can't be made to choose between his two daughters and then you see Elizabeth telling Rachel she is to pack her bags and go back to live with her mother. I thought things were going too smoothly when they kept showing Rachel being the big sister and something was going to happen. Very interesting show! ~Leslie~

Understandable about the plants, a little weird about the mattress, especially since it sounds like the store does business here in CA? A few months ago DH was looking at backpacks online- the kind that people who do multiple day trekking use. Some of the packs were not to be shipped to CA and that was one we just couldn't figure out. Some from the manufacturer could be and some couldn't. Never did figure that one out. They all looked like they were made of the same materials... I use to buy supplements from a large retailer in the midwest, but once CA pushed the prop 65 thing on them, they stopped shipping to CA. I can't blame them, no supplement company wants to have to put a cancer warning on a health product. I was trying to order high quality fiber supplements for a family member at the time- don't they tell us to take that to prevent cancer? Problem with prop 65 is retailers put it on everything to protect themselves so it means nothing. A few months ago DH ordered from a place outside of CA that had to label their products with a prop 65 warning and the company humored us by sticking the warning label on everything including the invoice, the plastic bag the item came in, and a sticker from their company. As a little boy, my DH lived in China, and one day, while in his grandmother's care, they visited a 'soothsayer.' She was a woman from their rural village, who was supposedly gifted with visions of the future. She told DH's grandmother that DH would move far from China, and travel across a great ocean, before he was an adult. He would marry a 'ghost lady,' (that is what they called a Caucasian female) and have 3 children. She said he would have a boy, then a girl, then a boy. DH's grandmother was also told that DH's 2 sons would look like 'ghost fellows' but his daughter would look just like her great grandmother. This all seemed very far fetched, as no one in DH's family, having always lived in their remote village in China, had ever crossed a 'great ocean' before, and DH said he'd never even seen a Caucasian before, (until after he left China.) Well, 6 years later, DH and another family member escaped from Communist China, to Macau. Then 7 years later, he ended up moving here at age 16, to attend a boarding school, so he could learn English, and then get his college education here. So in fact, he did move far from China, by crossing a great ocean, before he was an adult. We met in our 20's and married. We had 3 kids, boy, girl, boy. Sure enough, I gave birth to sons who somehow exclusively inherited my (Irish) looks. Only our daughter looks Asian, but she doesn't resemble DH. She is however, the spitting image of DH's grandmother. It makes the skeptic in me concede, that perhaps some people actually are clairvoyant.

Since she also sells and rents tuxes I would think she might have more access to them, tho I guess lots of fellas wear regular ties with a tux these days.

That's a great cause, and a good feeling to help out.

The quilt I made for the breast cancer auction brought $500--it was bought by a doctor who wants to display it in his office. I have already been asked to donate another quilt for next year's fundraiser.

DH just found out how the cancer benefit did.
300 tickets sold at $40 is $12,000.
The raffles and food sales (spaghetti and meatballs) and the bar, brought the total to $17,000. That's terrific, and this was in a little town. They were honoured to play that nite, and said so when they were announcing the band following them.
