I fell over a speed bump...

while shopping with my husband on Tues we were walking across the parking lot and I must have been talking or at least not paying attention and tripped over the speed bump!!

I fell onto my right hip/side and it hurt like crap. My husband helped me up, luckily no cars were coming. We got off to the side and I decided only my pride was hurt. I'm still a little sore and still no bruising. Why is it the little bumps that I don't even know about leave huge bruises and the "real hurts" leave no evidence?

Lesson learned, in future I'll walk on the sidewalk and not take the shortcut across the parking lot.

Sounds like something I would do! Hope you heal up fast. Keep taking the OTC pain killers for the next day or so- to help you keep from stiffing up too much. Will the bruise get you some sympathy or just insight snickers and teasing around the house?

So sorry. Okay to talk but look down while doing so. You'll see the bump and might even find some money not that a penny means so much anymore but it might bring better luck. Heal quickly.

Mimi, that was also one of my biggest fears: Mom falling and us not hearing her! I had a large school-bell beside her bed that, if she needed me, she could ring or shove onto the floor: there's no way to ignore that sound! We also tried an intercom, but she never did get the knack of buzzing us even when she was lucid, so a baby monitor is the way to go. The one thing I'm concerned about are the bed rails. Statistically, our elderly are more severly injured by trying to climb over bed rails when they need to get out of bed than just slipping onto the floor from bed. That's why they're not used in many nursing homes. There are rails that attach to the bed and are only a foot or more wide to give them something to grasp onto when getting into and out of bed, and that may help...Does your Mom have wall-to-wall carpeting in her room? If not, maybe a very large, stable one could be used to cushion a slip out of bed? Also, do you know why she fell? Was she trying to get out, or did she just turn over and fall? Perhaps pillows, or a large body-pillow tucked under her blankets along the edge could help re-direct her turning over? She may not be getting up in the middle of the night yet, but there will come a time, and rails scare me.... Anyway...I'm glad to hear she only broke a nail! Good grief. I hope you find a solution for her...maybe putting her bed against a wall, or positioning a dresser beside her bed? Good luck, I've been there, and I know how frightening it all can be! Thank heavens she's loving her new home and is vitually THRIVING in it! She's so happy and always has something new to tell us about! What a miracle! But what a decision to have had to make! Just my two cents, on heat transfer in a dynamic environment. I.e. fluid as opposed to a solid block of anything. There is a lot of opposing theory here. First lets try and apples and apples it. If the surface area and thermal dynamic properties of the heat exchanger are the same i.e. one is aluminum a one is copper. And the only variable is the speed at which the water flows through the pipe. You first have to understand the effects of laminar flow on the xsfer of heat (energy) from the walls of the heat exchanger to the fluid in the center of the pipe. Due to the increase of friction at the edges of the water Colum inside the pipe , the water in the center of the pipe flows faster, with me so far? The statement "heat xsfer is greatest when the deference between the bodies is greatest" is in a way correct when you look at percentage of transfer. What you fail to take into account is that the transfer works both ways. At the same time you are heating the water , you are cooling the pipe. Thus requiring more energy to heat the pipe. Since the energy to heat the pipe is limited i.e. the amperage of your wiring in a heat pump or flow of gas in a furnace, You must stick to real world. Another fact is heat transfer has momentum. Once you pass a point of the curve you see a ramping effect called thermal momentum. Soooo if the gauge is how fast you raise a body of water outside the exchanger i.e. a pool or spaÂ the question is simple the longer a molecule is in proximity to a heat source the more energy it will adsorb. So the two options are 1. to run that "piece" of water quickly through the exchanger so it can deposit its heat into the body of water and go back and get more? Or , 2. to allow that "piece" of water more time in the exchanger to gather more energy to deposit it in to the water. The end result is the same, Hot. The deference is the curve. We use this formula every day in controlling chemical reactions through temperature. The slower moving fluid reaches the steeper part of the curve faster, thus gaining Thermal momentum fasterÂ.. ending up with the body of water reaching a desired temperature faster. DamÂ.. I tripped over a curb once. Hurt my pride more than anything. I also had a fresh manicure and one of the nails was ruined. Hope you feel better fast.

OUCH that had to hurt! I trip over my own feet these days, have taken a few hurtful falls when trying to get up and walk, not fun at all.

If the bump was not painted so it's conspicuous, you might call the store and mention this to the manager.

I didn't fall on one but just about destroyed the underside of my car on a speed bump. The other thing I worry about falling on are those cement bumpers where you park your car. You just have to be so careful.

Hope you are ok. If you don't feel better very soon, you might want to go for an x-ray to check for a fracture, sorry to say.

I did the same thing this summer. Cut the palms of both hands and my right elbow. It took several weeks for the scab on the elbow to go away. my left wrist is still sore.

I hit so hard and so quick I didn't even realize what happened until I was down.

I was happy no one was around to see me. I quickly got up and in my car and went home.

I was really sore for a few days... I hope you don't get too sore.

And I'm sorry you fell.

An unexpected fall is never fun. I have never fell over on a speed dump but a stop line brought me down this summer. My flip flop slipped on the thick painted line (it was raining). Like you, it hurt a little physically but a lot pride wise even though I did laugh it off.

Some states do not allow speed bumps any more. I think CA is one of them. Too much damage to cars and people. Find out if they are legal where you are. There are other ways to slow down traffic.

Several years ago, while walking on the edge of a beach road, I stepped off the black top and broke my ankle! The "drop" was only 2", but I managed to do it in such a fashion that I needed a cast for two months. So much for our two months' winter stay in FL! We came home early!

Ouch. I've done that too but so far haven't fallen. Instead I trip on cracks in sidewalks at night when walking the dog. I now know the sidewalks to stay away from. LOL

Really, I hope your feeling not as sore tonight. Sometimes it takes longer than we wish!

The section on the side of the thigh from the knee to the hip does not have lot of padding. The big muscles are concetrated on the front and rear side of the thigh. Getting rapped on the side of the thigh hurts and will be sore for a day or more. I remember in highschool that one of the nasties boys would do to each other was to punch the side of the thigh with a raised knuckle. The muscle would knot up and the victim could barely walk afterward. That spot would remain sore for a couple of days. How do I know? - I was the victim.

Yes Toni I'm still at the garden center, next week is the Christmas Open House and starts late nights for us. I'm not looking forward to wrapping all the glass ornaments at the checkout or the long lines and grumpy people...........oh the fun of retail at the holidays!!!
