I fell over a speed bump...

while shopping with my husband on Tues we were walking across the parking lot and I must have been talking or at least not paying attention and tripped over the speed bump!!

I fell onto my right hip/side and it hurt like crap. My husband helped me up, luckily no cars were coming. We got off to the side and I decided only my pride was hurt. I'm still a little sore and still no bruising. Why is it the little bumps that I don't even know about leave huge bruises and the "real hurts" leave no evidence?

Lesson learned, in future I'll walk on the sidewalk and not take the shortcut across the parking lot.

Sounds like something I would do! Hope you heal up fast. Keep taking the OTC pain killers for the next day or so- to help you keep from stiffing up too much. Will the bruise get you some sympathy or just insight snickers and teasing around the house?

So sorry. Okay to talk but look down while doing so. You'll see the bump and might even find some money not that a penny means so much anymore but it might bring better luck. Heal quickly.

Chelcass, be aware if you have a mountain lion they are bigger than bobcat, Beautiful face & long tail about 2 ft. on 1 I faced. Maybe I mentioned it on here before but I was going to nursery part of hardware store & noticed large hole in chain link fence, the freeway is right behind it & there is grassy strip so very easy for hungry animals to come into the city from the mountains 1 mile above the store. I was walking & wondered what kind of dog was walking toward me, he had such a long tail, I couldn't see his face as there were some potted plants out in the aisle & he was looking towards area where parents send their kids while they shop. about 100 ft from me he had to go around a pot & I saw his beautiful face & realized it was a wild animal but I wasn't sure what, I backed up but they are very fast & if he wanted me for lunch he could have, it was on anniversary of my hubby's death so was really unsettling, anyway I told them about it & told them I did not want to read about 1 of those kids mauled & killed. The ducks were completely enclosed even top so he would have had to work at getting in. We went out (no kids were there that day)& looked for it(how dumb was that) none of us looked up, they go up in trees.(or roofs etc. & several are sighted every year, 1 in Santa Clarita couple of days later, could have been one I saw. bumped out rangetop - bump out hood?

drtom77, Wolf recommends 36" for max height, so you should be fine. Are you measuring from the top of the rangetop grates? Here's my situation: I have a Wolf rangetop, interior wall, 36" tall counters, and I'm 5'11" tall. Ventilation is a Broan Elite 1200 cfm external roof mounted blower, 10" duct, a long run with 2 -90 degree turns and an angle. My arched wood hood is 34 1/2" above the rangetop grates at the center of the arch(gives 2" clearance for my head). My liner/insert is recessed inside it at 38 1/2" above the rangetop grates. Too high IMO! My hood operates by a variable speed knob. The lowest setting is worthless. Medium is great for most jobs and high effective for very smokey or grease spattering stuff. There are no lingering smells in my kitchen and operation is quiet. I wouldn't lower the hood and bump my head, but I'd stay at the 36" max height. Also if you do have to run your hood at a tad higher speed for effectiveness, the operation should be quiet with your in-line blower. Just my opinion. Hope it helps!

My wife and I were just discussing this. It might shock someone the first time by - hope they don't cause an accident trying to avoid it. It won't phase someone once they pass it a few times - let's hope there's never a real kid crossing that stretch of road after everyone becomes accustomed to ignoring it. Let alone that it's in bad taste. The only good that can come of this is if they scrap the plan.

Just my two cents, on heat transfer in a dynamic environment. I.e. fluid as opposed to a solid block of anything. There is a lot of opposing theory here. First lets try and apples and apples it. If the surface area and thermal dynamic properties of the heat exchanger are the same i.e. one is aluminum a one is copper. And the only variable is the speed at which the water flows through the pipe. You first have to understand the effects of laminar flow on the xsfer of heat (energy) from the walls of the heat exchanger to the fluid in the center of the pipe. Due to the increase of friction at the edges of the water Colum inside the pipe , the water in the center of the pipe flows faster, with me so far? The statement "heat xsfer is greatest when the deference between the bodies is greatest" is in a way correct when you look at percentage of transfer. What you fail to take into account is that the transfer works both ways. At the same time you are heating the water , you are cooling the pipe. Thus requiring more energy to heat the pipe. Since the energy to heat the pipe is limited i.e. the amperage of your wiring in a heat pump or flow of gas in a furnace, You must stick to real world. Another fact is heat transfer has momentum. Once you pass a point of the curve you see a ramping effect called thermal momentum. Soooo if the gauge is how fast you raise a body of water outside the exchanger i.e. a pool or spaÂ the question is simple the longer a molecule is in proximity to a heat source the more energy it will adsorb. So the two options are 1. to run that "piece" of water quickly through the exchanger so it can deposit its heat into the body of water and go back and get more? Or , 2. to allow that "piece" of water more time in the exchanger to gather more energy to deposit it in to the water. The end result is the same, Hot. The deference is the curve. We use this formula every day in controlling chemical reactions through temperature. The slower moving fluid reaches the steeper part of the curve faster, thus gaining Thermal momentum fasterÂ.. ending up with the body of water reaching a desired temperature faster. DamÂ.. I need a beer!

I tripped over a curb once. Hurt my pride more than anything. I also had a fresh manicure and one of the nails was ruined. Hope you feel better fast.

OUCH that had to hurt! I trip over my own feet these days, have taken a few hurtful falls when trying to get up and walk, not fun at all.

If the bump was not painted so it's conspicuous, you might call the store and mention this to the manager.

I didn't fall on one but just about destroyed the underside of my car on a speed bump. The other thing I worry about falling on are those cement bumpers where you park your car. You just have to be so careful.

Hope you are ok. If you don't feel better very soon, you might want to go for an x-ray to check for a fracture, sorry to say.

I did the same thing this summer. Cut the palms of both hands and my right elbow. It took several weeks for the scab on the elbow to go away. my left wrist is still sore.

I hit so hard and so quick I didn't even realize what happened until I was down.

I was happy no one was around to see me. I quickly got up and in my car and went home.

I was really sore for a few days... I hope you don't get too sore.

And I'm sorry you fell.

An unexpected fall is never fun. I have never fell over on a speed dump but a stop line brought me down this summer. My flip flop slipped on the thick painted line (it was raining). Like you, it hurt a little physically but a lot pride wise even though I did laugh it off.

Some states do not allow speed bumps any more. I think CA is one of them. Too much damage to cars and people. Find out if they are legal where you are. There are other ways to slow down traffic.

Several years ago, while walking on the edge of a beach road, I stepped off the black top and broke my ankle! The "drop" was only 2", but I managed to do it in such a fashion that I needed a cast for two months. So much for our two months' winter stay in FL! We came home early!

Ouch. I've done that too but so far haven't fallen. Instead I trip on cracks in sidewalks at night when walking the dog. I now know the sidewalks to stay away from. LOL

The section on the side of the thigh from the knee to the hip does not have lot of padding. The big muscles are concetrated on the front and rear side of the thigh. Getting rapped on the side of the thigh hurts and will be sore for a day or more. I remember in highschool that one of the nasties boys would do to each other was to punch the side of the thigh with a raised knuckle. The muscle would knot up and the victim could barely walk afterward. That spot would remain sore for a couple of days. How do I know? - I was the victim.

Yes Toni I'm still at the garden center, next week is the Christmas Open House and starts late nights for us. I'm not looking forward to wrapping all the glass ornaments at the checkout or the long lines and grumpy people...........oh the fun of retail at the holidays!!!
