Is your garden keeping you busy this Fall?

I cleaned up mine last week and I've already planted almost all the new bulbs: 200 tulips, 50 daffodils, 50 crocus and 30 grape hyacinths. I have 24 daffodils left to plant tomorrow and I'll be all done till Spring.

Planning to add any bulbs?

I'm just going to plant a few dozen tulips this year and it's too early to do that yet. I'll plant them the end of this month.

I have a place in mind to put some daffodils, but I don't have that part of my yard made into a flowerbed yet. That's in next year's plans.

My perennial beds are all cleaned up. I would like to plant some bulbs, but the yard is overrun with moles, voles and chipmunks. With all those hungry mouths running around underground, I know it would be a waste of time and money to plant them.

DH did till up a 5' x 20' strip yesterday so it will be ready for me to plant in come spring. It will feature tall grasses to help hide the compost, mulch and spare topsoil piles at the back lot line. This new bed makes 19 areas that he will have to mow around and keep edged. My sweet DH, he is so willing to fill my every whim.

Mulchy, 'Wall-'o-water' is a brand name for a water-filled plant protector (a circle of joined plastic tubes you set around your tender plant and fill with water). Using jugs or other 2L containers would work the same way. This is my first year using them, but I've heard they really help tomatoes and peppers and other tender growers that need extra help here in the Northeast. I figure they can't hurt the squash etc. (And if the germination is poor for the seeds the kids just planted, we can sow some more - but I'm hoping for warmer weather soon. It just HAS to be warmer this summer than the past two - doesn't it?? PLEASE tell me it will be warmer!!) Yes, I love to garden. Therapy is where you find it. My husband plays the pipe organ, my father flies model airplanes - to each their own. My husband and I have a joint dream: someday a new house with a huge great room for a pipe organ, set on 2 acres of land to garden. . . . Hey, dream big! Laurelin

In Canada, I haven't been able to get any of the card and word games to download. I think I would use my iPad more for this anyway. I have about 400 books on my Kindle and am getting mostly free books daily. I use mine for reading purposes almost exclusively. I read daily and no longer read paper books. I'm retired and haven't had to add any PDF's or other work related material. I have gotten my e-mail working and used the Internet to visit my favourite sites but it isn't exactly the best platform to use for this purpose. The 3G on the Kindle 3 will be useful when I travel though for emergencies. I do not put music on mine. We do not have access to the Touch or Fire yet in Canada.

How do you keep ( or try) weeds out of your garden?

In the veggie garden I use a scuffle hoe. In perennial and shrub beds I use a combination of cardboard or newspaper and a deep layer of mulch, 4-6 inches when spread, though it settles some. It is looser than soil and so makes new weeds much easier to remove. I edge the shrub beds to prevent grass and weeds from growing in from surrounding lawn areas and check that weeds haven't grown over the edging about once a month. I weed regularly, but never for long and learn the life cycles of my weeds so that I can get rid of them before they bloom and seed. So dandelions are the earliest spring and are removed by a long skinny-bladed weeder that is designed to remove deep tap roots. I look for the flowers and spend perhaps 1/2 hour 2-3 times a week to remove them before they seed. The flowers go in the trash since the seeds continue to develop, but the plants get spread out to dry on the fencing around the compost pile and then join the compost. The Glechoma/creeping Charlie and Oxalis/wood sorrel are also easiest to spot when blooming. Glechoma blooms late spring here, and I try to trace the vines and pull at each root node so I get as much as possible of the long vines that wind around other plants. I find Oxalis blooms on and off all summer, and so I patrol about once a week all summer and pull what I find. Once you get to the point that you are preventing seeding, the amount of work will reduce amazingly over a couple of years.

Thank you Carol and summersrhythm, I agree with the "can't keep up with the weeds" because everyday I do a stroll I seem to have to pull little seedlings out around my plants and they just continue to grow and grow. We live next to wetlands as well and there are tons of native grasses and plants and those seeds end up blowing in with the wind. I would be so much more at ease with grass to smother out some of the weeds. Every year I have a huge job at the beginning of spring. I may want to try that cardboard or newspaper technique next year instead of digging it all up. Probably just use a string cutter than lay the cardboard over the top and mulch. The digging is so much work, and I have 4 kiddos as well, and it's hard to find the time to complete it every year. Well thank you all for your kindness and compliments! The passion is real here. I love browsing this forum for all of the pictures of other people's roses and hard work. They all are so beautiful!

Yes, it is. I bought some plants at Lowes, at half price. :)

two mugo pines, a gardenia, a sky pencil and a hosta

They are all planted now, even the flowering quince has been moved to a "better spot".

Of course, at this time it means I have to mow circles around all them, but eventually more bermuda grass will have been dug out, and those plants will be in interesting shaped beds, all connected. :)

It's been so hot here that I'm about a month behind in my fall planting.

I finally managed to plant 8 6-packs of pansies yesterday in between rain showers. They look good this morning - they like the cooler weather, and so do I!

I planted crocus bulbs yesterday,DH helped. He did all the digging. I still have tomato plants to yank and compost. If I get a warm day,I'll get to them.

LOL--keeping us busy? You could say that!

The new house sits on a third of an acre and has about 3 dozen trees--some deciduous, some pine with long needles and huge pine cones, and the previous owners, as far as we can see, haven't raked for many, many years. Add to all that clean-up the fact that DH is recovering from hernia surgery and we've both had the flu... Well, it's been a challenge to say the least.

Not planning on any major planting until we see what comes up next spring--although, I seriously doubt there's a lot of stuff there.

It SHOULD be. I started cleaning up, but I haven't been feeling well. It's so nice out today that I feel bad that I am not working on it. But I'm off on Friday, so hopefully it will be nice then, and I will feel well enough to do it.
