Is your garden keeping you busy this Fall?

I cleaned up mine last week and I've already planted almost all the new bulbs: 200 tulips, 50 daffodils, 50 crocus and 30 grape hyacinths. I have 24 daffodils left to plant tomorrow and I'll be all done till Spring.

Planning to add any bulbs?

I'm just going to plant a few dozen tulips this year and it's too early to do that yet. I'll plant them the end of this month.

I have a place in mind to put some daffodils, but I don't have that part of my yard made into a flowerbed yet. That's in next year's plans.

My perennial beds are all cleaned up. I would like to plant some bulbs, but the yard is overrun with moles, voles and chipmunks. With all those hungry mouths running around underground, I know it would be a waste of time and money to plant them.

DH did till up a 5' x 20' strip yesterday so it will be ready for me to plant in come spring. It will feature tall grasses to help hide the compost, mulch and spare topsoil piles at the back lot line. This new bed makes 19 areas that he will have to mow around and keep edged. My sweet DH, he is so willing to fill my every whim.

Oh that's very nice Brenda and Pat:) That's about 20 daylillies lining the front between the garden area and the grass behind the different bulbs dieing out. There are 9 more roses that you can't even see behind the dragon and the redwood tree. I've still need to push some more of that walk on bark up behind the climbers to the fence and cover the clay and then get a couple loads of mulch and cover all this area. I plan to do that next weekend on payday. Most of these are the larger mini floras and floribundas and HTs showing here and yes it'll look way different in a few months and next year at this time way different. Especially once the climbers start filling in. I'm not really done and this will be an on going process too, I think a garden is always an evolving process:) The next 3 roses arrive on Friday I hear, so I'm taking a break until then! You just don't think you have nice gardens and I hear you talk about your plants and I don't believe a word of it! I've been yearning all fall and winter to have a small part of what you have, LOL* It'll be years before mine looks very lush. I still would enjoy pics, I love to see pics of flowers and plants.

Nice to see you back, Silvia. I started a year and a half ago with a 4X4 bed, then two of them, then added a 3X6, and have just filled 2 4X8 beds. My sweet peppers and an Ancho are up, as are my 8 tomatoes. They will transplant in a few weeks. Next week green onions and beans go into the ground. My fall squashes are waiting for the sweet potatoes to come out. The ground is swelling in the bed, so that should be in a week or two. I will also start broccoli and onions next week. I've had celery in the seed starter for almost 2 weeks, but no show yet. I have heard that it takes a long time to germinate, so I'm still hoping. I am using the seed starter contraptions from the box store that has a water wicking mat in it. It seems to work well. I have them under the overhand on the West side of the house, and in the screen room. They get about 2 hours of full sun each day (when its not raining). I may have to get a light for the mid-winter starts. The plan is to start things like broccoli and cauliflower a couple of plants each week. Hey Anniebert-- To clarify, I do most of my gardening in PA (Adams County) zone 6, north of Frederick by 40+ miles. The rest I do in Westminster, MD. I've lived here in MD 5 years and have gone by the wisdom of the local plant nursery (Bowmans) more than by Victory Seeds' frost chart--which most of the links on Google guide one to. Here in Westminster, the common wisdom is to wait until May because the last frost of the season is fickle and can occur right up to mid-May. So we wait to put tomatoes in by that date. Now up in Adams County, also considered in the MidAtlantic zone 6, an examination of the actual last/first frost/freeze records from 1972 to current show that the last frost did not occur sooner than April 20th, but is mostlikely to occur the second week of May--even up to May 20! April is more of a freeze month and we have even had freezes up to May 28!(1994) So, in either place, I wouldn't dare go by the last frost dates you gave! I hope this explains my position and why I was wondering about your "sanity". Haha. :-) As for starting plants from seed--every year I tell myself I am going to get the cold loving flowers like Stock begun in time. I hope this year I can break the pattern of not getting to it in time!

Thank you Carol and summersrhythm, I agree with the "can't keep up with the weeds" because everyday I do a stroll I seem to have to pull little seedlings out around my plants and they just continue to grow and grow. We live next to wetlands as well and there are tons of native grasses and plants and those seeds end up blowing in with the wind. I would be so much more at ease with grass to smother out some of the weeds. Every year I have a huge job at the beginning of spring. I may want to try that cardboard or newspaper technique next year instead of digging it all up. Probably just use a string cutter than lay the cardboard over the top and mulch. The digging is so much work, and I have 4 kiddos as well, and it's hard to find the time to complete it every year. Well thank you all for your kindness and compliments! The passion is real here. I love browsing this forum for all of the pictures of other people's roses and hard work. They all are so beautiful!

Yes, it is. I bought some plants at Lowes, at half price. :)

two mugo pines, a gardenia, a sky pencil and a hosta

They are all planted now, even the flowering quince has been moved to a "better spot".

Of course, at this time it means I have to mow circles around all them, but eventually more bermuda grass will have been dug out, and those plants will be in interesting shaped beds, all connected. :)

I was going to clean up my garden last week but got sick. I'm still sick so it'll have to wait.

It's been so hot here that I'm about a month behind in my fall planting.

I finally managed to plant 8 6-packs of pansies yesterday in between rain showers. They look good this morning - they like the cooler weather, and so do I!

I planted crocus bulbs yesterday,DH helped. He did all the digging. I still have tomato plants to yank and compost. If I get a warm day,I'll get to them.

LOL--keeping us busy? You could say that!

The new house sits on a third of an acre and has about 3 dozen trees--some deciduous, some pine with long needles and huge pine cones, and the previous owners, as far as we can see, haven't raked for many, many years. Add to all that clean-up the fact that DH is recovering from hernia surgery and we've both had the flu... Well, it's been a challenge to say the least.

Not planning on any major planting until we see what comes up next spring--although, I seriously doubt there's a lot of stuff there.

It SHOULD be. I started cleaning up, but I haven't been feeling well. It's so nice out today that I feel bad that I am not working on it. But I'm off on Friday, so hopefully it will be nice then, and I will feel well enough to do it.
