I Quit Smoking !!

Hi,

A while back I asked for opinions on this forum about

dental work. Well, of course, you who answered were super.

I have not had a cig since last Saturday. I had to quit-

dentist said for gum healing.

I was on Lexapro for about 3 years. It helped w/ anxiety & sleep problems, however I wanted to discontinue because I didn't cry anymore, felt I was having some brain-failure moments (I made some mistakes at work), brain zap feelings & my husband and I both agreed I was a little too unconcerned about things. Anyhow, the shrink who prescribed said any withdrawal symptoms were 'in my head'. I tried weaning myself and was so nervous, I finally made an appt w/ a psychologist so they could sort of hold my hand thru the w/drawal. She was great. She saw me as needed and said she had heard about this many times. My withdrawal was tapered & slow. I negotiated 3 weeks off using sick time w/ company nurse, however never used it. I recall my bothersome symptoms include involuntary leg movements as I was trying to go to sleep and headaches. For about 2 months, I had some crying episodes at work. I would cry for little reason. Finally had to explain to coworker who sat next to me--- I wanted her to know I hadn't come unglued, it was the meds. Don't remember much else - it's been a few years, but it was definitely a big deal for me.

Great news, Taunia! Quitting smoking is, according to my husband, the most difficult thing he's ever done. It took years for him to truly lose the craving, but you should hear him now... he's in ever-so-much-better physical health, can actually taste food, loves clean air, isn't tied to that little package that ruled his life... ha-ha... I'm sure you feel the same way. I'm proud of you for having the determination to DO IT! Sure am glad you are doing better. We've missed you here, and there, and everywhere! Can't wait to see your new contributions to the forums.

Connie, I'm softly patting you on your shoulder. It's very hard I know. As a senior case manager (retired), a nurse, and recently widowed, I can tell you that most Hospices will make nursing home visits. They make sure the patient is comfortable, both with expediting appropriate medications, personalized personal care/baths, and nursing interventions. One lady I knew had no family left and the Hospice nurse stayed with her till the end. I just can't say enough good about our Hospice in Central Illinois. And yes, it is not irrevocable. Great dog pics! I quit smoking almost 5 yrs ago. I will never smoke again because quitting was the hardest thing I have ever done and I never want to go through that again. My brother was just recently approved for his SS Disability. His came through really quick. He is 57, worked a physical job for the past 37 years, he went to a lawyer first and the lawyer told him he didn't need him, his paperwork was in good order, he had worked the same job for years and he had paperwork from the doctor stating that his body was no longer able to do the job he had done for most of his life. He got approved in about 2 months without any problems, never heard of it going so smoothly. It was a huge relief to my brother, said it was the first good nights sleep he had had in months. Congratulations Mimilm! I noticed such significent changes almost immediately, have you? Those positive changes were so encouraging in keeping me on that nicotine free road, I hope that they are as good for you.

Congratulations and best of luck on your decision to quit smoking! My advice, from experience, would be: don't EVER pick up another cigarette or you'll be back on them.

Congratulations! You will see a huge improvement in your gums and teeth. When I smoked, the dentist had to scrape stains off my teeth at every 6-month checkup. Now, you can't see any stains at all and the scraping isn't necessary anymore. I have periodontal disease, but have had no problems whatsoever in the 7 years since my last cigarette.

I know how hard it is to quit and stay smoke-free. I cried for 2 weeks when I quit smoking! Occasionally I think it would be nice to have "just one"...but I keep reminding myself that I am "a puff away from a pack a day." That has kept me from touching even one.

Congratulations! Good luck to you on this endeavor. I smoked slightly years ago, but never had the addiction so quitting was easy for me, but I've watched others try and have a very difficult time. We are all here for moral support so don't hesitate if you need it. Congratulations, too, to all those here that have successfully quit. I know it isn't easy but so worth it.

Way to go! While I was standing at checkout at a Walgreen's yesterday my gaze fell on the cigarettes behind the clerk and their price tags. Wow, cigarettes are an expensive habit. Keep up the good fight!

Congratulations!!! Keep it up!!!!!I quit a year ago(plus a couple weeks). I have noticed how bad smokers smell..eGADS!! To think I smelled like that too!

very often, but love the questions and answers here.
And of course, the pics! I see quite a few of you were smokers, that is encouraging--
I've already noticed the $$ that's not going up in smoke--wow!

Belated Congratulations! From a former smoker who just didn't want to quit, but has more than made up for it over these many years of better health. Keep on the right track... it is VERY tough. We will keep cheering you along. Nanny

That's wonderful!

As for the money, you might want to put the money away, since you were spending it anyway. When my dad quit, he started putting away the cost of two packs of cigarettes a day(about $5 at the time, iirc) in a glass jar. Every year, he'd throw a big dinner at a restaurant with all our extended family with the proceeds, and still have money left over. It felt like "free" money to him, as he'd been spending it for years.
