I Quit Smoking !!

Hi,

A while back I asked for opinions on this forum about

dental work. Well, of course, you who answered were super.

I have not had a cig since last Saturday. I had to quit-

dentist said for gum healing.

Thank you for your support.

Lois I love that!! Wendy I hope you recover quickly! Someone had mentioned that smoking prevents our bodies from healing as fast. Not sure if it is true though! I know it has been a hard struggle to give it up but I feel so much better now. I won't say I am totally over all of the cravings but it is getting easier!! Wendy, I am proud you quit, it's hard but it gets easier. If you slip don't kick yourself. Believe me I have had a ton of slips since I have been working on quiting. Today is 4 weeks since my last slip. With my slips I still have managed to not smoke over 2500 cigarettes since mid june. That number is crazy! Though it helps to focus on what I didn't smoke!! Good luck on your journey and if there is anything I can do to be of support you let me know!!

Connie, I'm softly patting you on your shoulder. It's very hard I know. As a senior case manager (retired), a nurse, and recently widowed, I can tell you that most Hospices will make nursing home visits. They make sure the patient is comfortable, both with expediting appropriate medications, personalized personal care/baths, and nursing interventions. One lady I knew had no family left and the Hospice nurse stayed with her till the end. I just can't say enough good about our Hospice in Central Illinois. And yes, it is not irrevocable. Powder detergents don't cause Valley Fever, only exacerbate symptoms. I've also had pleurisy and mono, so apparently I'm susceptible to lung infections. Breathing in particulates from any source can can make you sick. Think coal mining. I don't have allergies according to the 75 pin-prick tests done during the 9-month multi-physician round of visits looking for a diagnosis of the VF. The spot on my lung is watched and hasn't increased in size. We know not to mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia but if you're working with alkaline and phosphates, you can set off asthma-type reactions. From www.medicalnewstoday.com: Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis, California disease, Desert rheumatism, and San Joaquin valley fever is a fungal disease that is endemic in certain parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Nevada and northwestern Mexico. It is caused by Coccidioides immitis or C. posadasii. Infected individuals experience fever, chest pain, coughing and some other symptoms. Coccidioides immitis is a pathogenic fungus that resides in the soil. During long, dry spells the fungus remains dormant, and then develops as a mold with elongated filaments which break off and become airborne spores, known as arthroconidia, during the rainy season. The arthroconidia become airborne after disruption of the soil from farming, earthquakes, wind or construction activity. Humans become infected by inhaling the fungus particles. Valley fever is not a human-to-human transmissible disease - you cannot catch it from an infected person. Individuals with mild cases of valley fever do not usually require medical therapy, as the condition resolves on its own. However, in more severe cases the patient may need antifungal medications.

I'm not sure we know the whole story which is fine. I think I know/surmise what's going on as I know of someone that had something happen to them and was followed and photographed. Their FB page actually got them into trouble as they were supposed to be severely injured but they really were just pretending. They posted pictures on FB of being out 4 wheeling and having a great time when they were supposed to be so injured that they could hardly even walk. If there were someone that was investigating the case and did find their on line postings, they could even make something out of nothing. So rather than be afraid of every single word that is said, it is easier to just not participate. If he does indeed have a lawyer, they may be advising him to just halt all on line writing for now. I can't believe that someone has to be a vegetable just to get disability.

Congratulations Mimilm! I noticed such significent changes almost immediately, have you? Those positive changes were so encouraging in keeping me on that nicotine free road, I hope that they are as good for you.

Congratulations and best of luck on your decision to quit smoking! My advice, from experience, would be: don't EVER pick up another cigarette or you'll be back on them.

Congratulations! You will see a huge improvement in your gums and teeth. When I smoked, the dentist had to scrape stains off my teeth at every 6-month checkup. Now, you can't see any stains at all and the scraping isn't necessary anymore. I have periodontal disease, but have had no problems whatsoever in the 7 years since my last cigarette.

I know how hard it is to quit and stay smoke-free. I cried for 2 weeks when I quit smoking! Occasionally I think it would be nice to have "just one"...but I keep reminding myself that I am "a puff away from a pack a day." That has kept me from touching even one.

Congratulations! Good luck to you on this endeavor. I smoked slightly years ago, but never had the addiction so quitting was easy for me, but I've watched others try and have a very difficult time. We are all here for moral support so don't hesitate if you need it. Congratulations, too, to all those here that have successfully quit. I know it isn't easy but so worth it.

Way to go! While I was standing at checkout at a Walgreen's yesterday my gaze fell on the cigarettes behind the clerk and their price tags. Wow, cigarettes are an expensive habit. Keep up the good fight!

Congratulations!!! Keep it up!!!!!I quit a year ago(plus a couple weeks). I have noticed how bad smokers smell..eGADS!! To think I smelled like that too!

I knew this would be the right place to come. I don't post
very often, but love the questions and answers here.
And of course, the pics! I see quite a few of you were smokers, that is encouraging--
I've already noticed the $$ that's not going up in smoke--wow!

Belated Congratulations! From a former smoker who just didn't want to quit, but has more than made up for it over these many years of better health. Keep on the right track... it is VERY tough. We will keep cheering you along. Nanny

That's wonderful!

As for the money, you might want to put the money away, since you were spending it anyway. When my dad quit, he started putting away the cost of two packs of cigarettes a day(about $5 at the time, iirc) in a glass jar. Every year, he'd throw a big dinner at a restaurant with all our extended family with the proceeds, and still have money left over. It felt like "free" money to him, as he'd been spending it for years.
