Straw or Fleece Pillow??

I wondering which would be warmer for my outdoor cat. (who would be an indoor cat, but for the big dogs in here)

I took the two small blankies off her box tonight and covered it first with a flannel back vinyl tablecloth. That was for a wind break to make sure cold wind doesn't blow in cracks. It has an inch and a half of foam insulation on each side and on the top. I put a piece of fleece over it and a small quilt then a large piece of fleece. Tried to tuck a piece of fleece inside because I think it is warmer than the quilted pillow sham I stuck in there.

Denny says I should fill the bottom with straw. I have two bales of straw here from Halloween.

Do you think the straw would really be what she would prefer?

I was going to sew a pillow with sides. Kind of shape it like a nest and cover it with fleece.

I just want to feel like she is staying warm.

I still want to get the snuggle safe thing for her. Just haven't had the extra money with all the grandkids having their birthdays and one daughter and DH...I was broke after all that the past couple of months.

So lets have a vote...Fleece pillow or straw???

I'd say straw.A deep bed of it/She could snuggle down into it.When I had horses,our barn cats used to snuggle deep in the straw and be toasty warm.

Sounds good. Be sure to look in Family Dollar for their $3 fleece throws. They are great and Walmart has them for $5. I think it is cheaper than buying by the yard for some things.Here is a picture of the tied fleece made from 2 $5 ones. Here is a link that might be useful:

Those of you that have the fleece sheets..are they easier to move on than flannel? I have a very difficult time changing my position in bed even on good quality sheets, and find it almost impossible in a bed with flannel sheets. I wear those satin type of night gowns and that material 'slides' better on the sheets, but I am so weak now that I still get all twisted up in the nightgown. I am always cold, so sleeping in the nude isn't an answer.

I have made several quillows. I made several just like I'd make a quilt with a cotton back and front and batting; adding the pocket for the folding. I have made one adult size out of fleece which I just hemmed with a decorative stitch and added the pocket. That one I made for a friend whose husband was having surgery and I knew she would spend severals hours in the ICU waiting room. I also made 4 out of fleece and put in the boat for the children to wrap in when they finish skiing, etc. I made one for my GS when he was a baby so I just made it baby sized. Are you planning to take a quilt already made and adding a pocket so it can be folded into a quillow? I see no reason why that should not work. Hope this helps. Sally

Good for him.I also taught my GS to embroider and sew.He can use my machine as well as i can.He's 8 years old.How old is yours. Here's what my GS made when he was 6.He embroidered his name,and then i helped him put it together.He did all the machine sewing as well,i did the pinning for him. It was funny,because he even figured out how he could reach the pedal without me doing it for him.He pulled my Denise Austin step thing over to the desk,set the pedal on it and then he was able to reach it without my help.Little independent bugger.LOL Kathi

Is there an electrical outlet nearby? Maybe a heating pad on low, under a washable fluffy fleece pillow. Maybe straw stuffed in a fleece pillowcase?

She might want to dig in loose straw to relieve herself. (My cats will happily use anything diggable in their catbox...gravel, small leaves, straw, shredded redwood bark, shredded paper, clay litter, pine pellet litter, etc. -- the more displacement and noise, the better!)

Do you have an old basket, a smaller sized one that could be covered with batting and then covered with the fleece? That would make a cozy nest she could sink down into.

I wondered how she was doing with the dogs. I'm glad she is still sticking around.

I vote for straw on the bottom, then fleece over it. Or stuff straw into 2 cheap fleece throws sewn together like a big pillow.
I thought you put those dogs outside after you put up a fence?

I think the straw would be the better thing, however my cat has a dog house with an old bedspread she uses.

I would stack the straw bales next to her house for more insulation and wind break. A washable bed filled with foam or fiberfill would be lovely for her. And the flannel backed tablecloth was a great idea, Patti.

I would put the straw bales around her house like Flamey suggested and then put several old blankets in her house. My indoor kitty likes to sleep all day under a down comforter or some blankets. Maybe an old sleeping bag would keep her warm.
