hmmmm, Donna, I never heard of set times for Trick or Treating.

Anyone else have set times for the event?

Sunday...it's always on the 31st.

Ours is Sunday from 6-8 p.m.

We always do it on the 31st too...and no set time - just generally starts when it begins to get dark.

House to house there is no time set.
Some of the business's and nursing homes have trick or treater's from 5-6pm.

Read today that some cities are setting age limits. No one over 12? Anyone else read this?

lets see if I can get this straight..in town at the local businesses on Friday from 4-7...regular trick or treating will be Sunday. While another town 7 minutes away will have theirs on Sat night..
Just going to get me a bucket full of candy and be done with it..Oh course I bet I will only have 3 at the most..

We don't ever have kids come to our house, we are just too remote. So this year we are going to my sons house in Oregon, and they are passing out candy on Sunday. DH is really happy about that, they get around 300 kids, and he loves the little ones!

Ours is always on the 30th (Saturday), I think the hours are 6-9. A nearby town has a parade on the 31st, I think that is the reason for trick or treating on the 30th. I don't think we have an age limit. When I lived in Boston I didn't answer the door. I wasn't comfortable answering the door and seeing a bunch of teenagers whose idea of a costume was a hoodie and vampire teeth.

trick or treating is on the 31st. that is Halloween. I don't understand, trick or treating NOT on Halloween.

I haven't a clue. We don't get any kids....There are families living in our subdivision, but not in my area. I live in fear that someone will show up at out front door and I won't have anything. I usually buy a few large candy bars just in case, but I'm on a diet and don't want anything tempting in the house. I guess I'll just keep the lights off. I don't mean to be a scrooge but in the 14 years we've lived here, we've only had two years where four kids came. Not worth sabotaging my diet for.

I didn't get any kids last year. The couple of years before only 4 or 5. I may just turn the lights off this year, naw, I can't do that. I love Halloween.

Years ago,if the 31st fell on a Sunday,trick or treating would be done on the Saturday...NEVER on the Sunday

It all comes down to Sunday having always been a religious day..and Hallowe'en being anything but religious

Sunday the town that is hosting an NFL game at 4,in MA. is asking parents to take their kids trick or treating saturday.The fear is that the football game will be breaking up at about the time older kids would be out trick or treating and for safety sake...they feel it best to do Halloween on Saturday. I agree completely with that decision.

Our town always posts the day and time in the newspaper.

This year, it is Saturday evening from 6-8. The nursing home and also the mall have a parade and pass out candy at 5, I believe this year. We never have T or T on Sunday's. We normally get about 7 kids at our house! BUT, just in case, I am always stocked up to make sure I have enough! LOL

If you want kids to stop, you have your outside light on, if it is not on....kids don't stop.

We're surrounded by gated communities with acreage. People actually come from other neighborhoods to trick 'or treat in our hood....the parents park temporarily in the middle of the street while following the kids as they walk....what a mess....

IMO Halloween is the 31st and that is the day they should celebrate.

It will be Sunday here. Some people are complaining saying it should be Saturday but you can't have some people going out Saturday and some on Sunday, it will get too confusing. So it will be Sunday like it should be. If some people don't agree with trick-or-treating on a Sunday they can keep their kids home and not give out treats. Simple, really.

I never understand why some places have trick or treating on a day other than THE day. I mean, why? Where I live it's Sunday this year, because that's Halloween. And I am looking forward to it! I'm happy to give treats to anyone that comes, regardless of age.

I don't really understand why it changes it either.. but, how exactly do people know it changes? I mean do you hear it on the news, is it in the paper, do you get fylers, do people call you? And what kind of notice do you get... do they set the calendar in January or did you just find out last week? It just seems odd that people can change it..and who are these people that get to decide when it is changed to? The mayor of the town? the principal of the h.s.? the editor of the newspaper? the president? Oprah? who decides?

I live in Houston. I'm guessing it would be pretty much impossible to regulate date and time of trick or treating here. Too big. Anyway, I like the fact that it is always on Halloween. I agree that it's weird to have it on any other day for the sake of convenience. They've already watered down every other holiday by moving it to the nearest Monday. So now Halloween is the nearest Saturday? What next, move Christmas and New Year's too?

At my house Halloween starts on Oct 31 at the moment the doorbell first rings, usually just after dark. It ends when I run out of candy or the last time the doorbell rings, whichever comes first. That's the way it was when I was a kid, millions of years ago, and IMO, that's the way it should be.

I used to get about 150 kids, and loved it....last year I got 5!!! We do have a big Halloween party at the school, so most of them go there now. I'm going to leave the lights off this year, I guess.....not worth bothering with so few.

to answer the question who decides, it's up to the city you live in...

in our area it will be sunday but some towns are restricting time frames...they're trying to avoid problems witholder teens.

we don't get t/t's because of our street being so busy...

The turning off of the porch light seems to be the universally accepted signal! We've employed it more than once, believe me.

I think turning off the porch light is sad, regardless of how many kids come. Sorry.

Ours is always on a Thursday, usually the Thursday before Halloween. If Halloween falls on a Thursday, it's not on that Thursday (you can't have kids out on Halloween, right? LOL). 6pm-8pm. Most kids go to the Trunk or Treat they have in the park and since we are way on the other side of town, we don't get very many kids anymore.

They publish the schedule in the paper and via the schools here. Often the date is selected due to schedules at the schools or for the weekend that is closest. Tonight is our annual Halloween parade, it will start at 7 and if we are all lucky it will be over by 11!

We used to have people driving to the entry of our
neighborhood (40 homes) and dropping the kids off
buy the entry signs. We ran out of candy for the first 3 years!
lol I even ran over to a convenience store
and bought candy! (a very expensive choice! lOL)
now, we don't get too many. I always send the extra
candy to DH's work and I try to buy stuff I don't
like! LOL
I don't mind the older teenagers either. They usually
come around after 7 or 8. They are ususally pretty
fun and really appreciate getting handfuls of candy.
AND I've never had MY jack~o~lanterns smushed in the
road! LOL

Our city council decides the date and it is published in the paper and posted at the schools. It has been this way since we have moved to our town in 1984.

The main reason our town does not do TorT on Sunday, is that most of the Churches in the area have some sort of young people programs going on...and Sunday is a "Church day" in our town. (small rural town)

Sunday , of course. But when it gets dark I turn off the outside light and no longer answer the door. Two push-in robberies in my town in the last week have me "spooked".

In the Milwaukee area, all the towns & villages set their own trick or treating hours. It's really nice, because then you can plan on manning your door for only a specific time slot. Since the 31st is on a Sunday this year most are in the 4-7 pm time slot.

However my neighborhood and the adjoining neighborhood always vote on their preferred time. Normally we end up doing it on a Saturday night from 4-8. It's fun in that since we live somewhat out in the country, where most people have long driveways and quite a bit of space between the houses, parents decorate lawn tractor wagons or minivans and groups of kids go trick or treating. The parents drop them at the end of the driveways and they run up them. It's nice in that the kids aren't cutting across your lawn or flowerbeds, but they still have to "work" for their treat.

This year, trick-or-treating is 1:00 to 5:00 PM on October 31st.

It is always on Sunday here. If Halloween is not on a Sunday, trick-or-treating is the Sunday before Halloween.

In this area, some neighborhoods do not have sidewalks, so I guess the Sunday afternoon time is done so kids won't be in the streets after dark.

Wow! I had no idea local governments regulated Halloween. It's the 31st of October. Do they decide when you should celebrate Thanksgiving too?
I don't know why that irritates me so much.
You can hunt for Easter eggs kids, but only between 8-9 am and on Saturday not Sunday. Any coloring of eggs must be completed by the Thursday prior to Easter (Saturday). Christmas presents may be opened only on Christmas Morning between 7-8 am. Any remaining presents not opened within that time will have to wait until after 6pm that evening.

We pass out candy on the 31st from dusk to whenever we run out.

When I was a kid,bsck in the Stone Age , Oct. 30 was called "Beggar's Night" and Oct. 31 was Halloween. KIds would come around both nights, even in the dark. My parents only let me go out on Oct. 31. Around here, we don't have that many young kids anymore. Last year we got about 10 kids, including our next-door neighbors' four grandchildren.

Its Sunday here. It would be hard to change everything. If it were me with only a few kids every year, I would just put a bowl out on the porch. It would be sad for those few if everyone turned their lights off. I don't mind teenagers coming at all! Why can't they have fun too? 12 and under is ridiculous IMO. My thoughts-the towns that change it and announce it thru the schools are not getting the word out to everyone. Not everyone has kids at home. Why change it at all? Trick or treating winds down by 9 (I stay 'open' till 10) and people can bring their kids home earlier if they want them to bed earlier. One thing that really bugs me to death-the people carting kids around in cars from house to house. No problem at all if a child in the group is handicapped or if their is a great distance between houses, but here in a subdivision it is LAZY, GREEDY, and UNSAFE (extra cars on the road).

I have no idea. I live in the boondocks and the only "masked kids" that come seeking treats here are raccoons.

I don't mind teenagers coming at all! Why can't they have fun too?

As long as they are in costume, I don't care how old they are. What I don't like is the ones who just figure it's a good way to get free candy. Yeah, ok, it's still free candy, but if you're in costume, it's in the spirit of the day.

On my out and about, today, passing housing developments, some had signs by their entrance stating TRICK OR TREATING is SATURDAY, with the times.

My condo has very few kids and no sign for T&T date.
