What is the age you start to get senior citizen discounts?

Depends on the business/organization. Some at 50, some at 55, some at 60 or 62. All by 65, I'm sure.

It Depends....ha HA! I crack myself up....but seriously folks, I'll be here all week.

Some places give discounts to AARP members. If so, you can become an AARP member at 50. But like sushipup said, generally 55, 60, 62 and 65 are most common.

I know a lot of times you have to ask. I'm dreading that though...the asking part. It kind of sucks....

....take over her bill paying, and then giver her an allowance. Not knowing whether or not a financial Power of Attorney has been conferred, I'd be hesitant to recommend taking the responsibility of discharging another's debt. What would that mean? Paying out of your own pocket? Sign her checks for her? You can't legally sign another's checks without the granted power to do so. Perhaps the least intrusive and easiest thing would be to have her son's name added to her checking account. Even though my brother had my Mother's financial POA and took charge of asset management, etc., I had the responsibility of keeping up with the everyday things. I simply had my name added to her checking account when she was beginning the slide into Alzheimer's and getting farther and farther removed from taking care of her affairs. I seem to recall it was nothing more than a quick visit to the bank, signing a paper providing my SS#, etc. and ordering a new set of checks. I also understand what it is to try and engage a senior in other activities - sometimes it's just not in the cards. Either they're not joiners by nature or as they age there's a certain fear in trying new things that are a little outside of their comfort zone. My Mother gave up playing golf with the local ladies league at age 85 and we never could come up with something/anything even remotely close to replacing the enjoyment she got from that. From what the OP has written, it does seem her MIL is just aging and that bad habits are becomming magnified; she doesn't quite recognize her spending habits as unusual or that she's being taken advantage of by her sister. It might not be any one of the dementias one could put their finger on right now. It could be in the future.

Well I wanted to follow up on this. We had a cook out this weekend with my mom, my kids and my grandkids. My mom yet again said things that were hurtful and inappropriate. My grandsons were being typical little boys and burping back and forth after they had drank some soda. It didn't really bother me. heck I didn't even notice it until my mom told them to go out in the back yard with the dogs if they are going to act like animals. I took my grandsons outside to play catch to get them away from her. I told my husband about it. He said "so boys were being boys and she gets rude again." That was when it hit me. She's an old grumpy woman being an old grumpy woman. I wish she would get help but that realization gave me some strength to deal with her. Someone said that 64 isn't a very old senior citizen. But I fully believe she may be showing signs of alzheimer's and dementia. Her filter for what is appropriate is diminishing. I just hope I can some how convince her to go to the doctor for this. Thanks to everyone for your advice.

"All those posters, who are complaining about older drivers, are you willing to volunteer to drive a senior, to the grocery store, or their doctors' visits?" Cold as it sounds, it is not the responsibility of people who are complaining about unsafe drivers to drive the people they're complaining about, around. It would be nice, and it would be charitable, but it is not their responsibility, nor are they obligated to accept having unsafe drivers on the roads if they don't want to drive others around. However, there does need to be some problem solving going on so that these older people can get to appointments and get errands done. But it is NOT acceptable for an unsafe driver to be on the road because they need to go somewhere. My daughter had to face that reality when her license was taken away due to a diagnosis of epilepsy, and the same goes for any other unsafe driver, including older ones. From my observations, police are quicker to ticket young drivers who are speeding slightly, than they are to ticket older drivers who's driving habits are unsafe. Many older drivers here drive slowly enough to obstruct traffic and pull out right in front of oncoming cars only to drive below the speed limit. They are never ticketed until they cause an accident. The younger drivers are quicker to be ticketed. Actually, a few years ago a senior citizen put her car in reverse and bashed into my car at an intersection, and then she yelled at me for not getting out of her way! She also refused to give me her license info, and a police officer had to get "verbal" with her to get her to provide it.

Sheesh, why so sensitive? Anything past about 40 is old. Face it, 100 years ago or a little more, a lot of people didn't live past that age. Depending on the place, you're a "senior" in their eyes at different ages and AARP starts harassing you big time at about 50. 50, 55, 60, 62, 65 are all ages that different places qualify as "senior". If you qualify for a "senior discount" then you're a senior. I'm not bothered by it. I know I'm old and I don't care. Give me my fogey funds and get outta my way you young whippersnappers, playing your funny music and strange clothes. I have a rocking chair and I use it.

One of my knees sure as heck should be eligible right now but I have to wait for my chronological age to catch up to it.

I started asking for senior discounts at movie theaters when I was in my late 50s and anyone I would go to the movies with was 65 or older. Now that I am 70 and gray haired, I don't have to ask.

Or, if you have grey hair, you might get asked, if you want the senior discount at the early age of 47?

LOL, that happened to me.

Now, at 58 I have to ask for it most of the time.

We just enrolled in AARP so I need to check out some of the advantages. We also have some AAA discounts that we don't always use. They(AAA) has a good discount for eyeglasses if you get them from one of the stores they recommend. LensCrafters is one.DH got 30% off there on his eyeglasses. I thought that was pretty good.

We also have the Golden Buckeye Card. I have yet to use that and have had it for some time now. I always forget to ask.

When I was 50 the last thing I wanted to think about was a senior discount.LOL

Around here it's any where from 50 and up...Years ago we were on our way to Florida and my hubby turned 50...He was so excited to be able to show his card and get a discount at some of the motels along the way....Now, they don't even ask for the card, they just look at us and know.....Oh the perks of being old!

I have no problem asking for discounts. Just remember some are only available a certain day of the week. Another discount that goes unclaimed is the VA discount for veterans and active military with ID.
