What is the age you start to get senior citizen discounts?

Depends on the business/organization. Some at 50, some at 55, some at 60 or 62. All by 65, I'm sure.

It Depends....ha HA! I crack myself up....but seriously folks, I'll be here all week.

Some places give discounts to AARP members. If so, you can become an AARP member at 50. But like sushipup said, generally 55, 60, 62 and 65 are most common.

I know a lot of times you have to ask. I'm dreading that though...the asking part. It kind of sucks....

I think calling one ma'am is the same as referring to a younger person as "kid". Just yesterday, I hung up on the salesman who referred to me as "young lady" on the phone. Don't assign your own personal pidgeon-holed adjective to me without my permission, that really irks me too. ASK...."would you like a senior citizen's discount?" That's a tough one, it's like saying to a non-pregnant woman, "when's the baby due?" But, really, what is a store attendant to do? Maybe put up a prominant sign put up, or a little counter sign, "Ask for your senior citizen discount", yeah, THAT'S the solution. There is discrimination EVERYWHERE, we all get our equal opportunity discrimination, in it's many varieties. Reminds me of yesterday's Paula Zahn show on race relations. An African-American man was asked in a restaurant to get a patron a glass of water and he got all upset. Heck, I was just recently asked by a rich looking person, when I was dressed down, to get them something in a store. I simply said "I don't work here", walked away and forgot about it (till now). The guy made a mistake, thinking I looked like the "type" to work there and it was a one time random thing. Given how no one really WANTS to age when you come down to it, and some people get really nuts about it, and some just annoyed, who wants to be reminded that they're aging via the kid at the counter? He should be retrained to shut up and put up a counter card. I'd send a note to the place. Rambling thoughts.....

Sheesh, why so sensitive? Anything past about 40 is old. Face it, 100 years ago or a little more, a lot of people didn't live past that age. Depending on the place, you're a "senior" in their eyes at different ages and AARP starts harassing you big time at about 50. 50, 55, 60, 62, 65 are all ages that different places qualify as "senior". If you qualify for a "senior discount" then you're a senior. I'm not bothered by it. I know I'm old and I don't care. Give me my fogey funds and get outta my way you young whippersnappers, playing your funny music and strange clothes. I have a rocking chair and I use it.

Thank you all for the well wishes and cute answers. I loved them all but think I'll stick with Moni's.....more experienced! Loved your story, Glenda...........my doctor once asked me how long I planned to live. Friends were startled by that question but it was in context with a question about my knee. I told her I had to hang in there at least until 85 because I have a dog that needs me. She said my knee would outlast me. LOL I had an extended wonderful birthday. My daughter surprised me with a party on my birthday....I didn't even expect her to be in town.....she's been gone all summer and my son flew in from California just for the party, had to leave the next day because he just started a new job. Thursday I was going out to dinner with my birthday group. We normally do lunches but milestones warrant dinners. When I got to my favorite restaurant, there were all my favorite golfing buddies waiting to celebrate with me. So it was a fun filled birthday. And best of all, I finally gave in and got a cleaning woman. I told myself I would get one when I turned 70 but that came and went and then I said 75 and that came and went, so finally I took the leap.

One of my knees sure as heck should be eligible right now but I have to wait for my chronological age to catch up to it.

I started asking for senior discounts at movie theaters when I was in my late 50s and anyone I would go to the movies with was 65 or older. Now that I am 70 and gray haired, I don't have to ask.

Or, if you have grey hair, you might get asked, if you want the senior discount at the early age of 47?

LOL, that happened to me.

Now, at 58 I have to ask for it most of the time.

We just enrolled in AARP so I need to check out some of the advantages. We also have some AAA discounts that we don't always use. They(AAA) has a good discount for eyeglasses if you get them from one of the stores they recommend. LensCrafters is one.DH got 30% off there on his eyeglasses. I thought that was pretty good.

We also have the Golden Buckeye Card. I have yet to use that and have had it for some time now. I always forget to ask.

When I was 50 the last thing I wanted to think about was a senior discount.LOL

Around here it's any where from 50 and up...Years ago we were on our way to Florida and my hubby turned 50...He was so excited to be able to show his card and get a discount at some of the motels along the way....Now, they don't even ask for the card, they just look at us and know.....Oh the perks of being old!

I have no problem asking for discounts. Just remember some are only available a certain day of the week. Another discount that goes unclaimed is the VA discount for veterans and active military with ID.
