Commercials you don't understand......here's mine

I don't understand the Brooke Shields commercial for Volkswagon. There are several variations of the same theme for this commercial. It's about a woman getting pregnant so she can get a Volkswagon...what's up with that? Splain to me please....

lol...I can't cuz I havent seen it...but that one for KIA out of Rochester where the guy goes on about it being a H U GGGGGG E deal gets to me

Maybee, I just went to YouTube and watched two of those commercials. I'm with you.....I haven't a clue. Unless they mean people are having babies so they'll need to buy one of those VW's with extra seating.

I have to say, though, that the commercials made me a little uncomfortable. "Babies born for German engineering"...... to me, it hits a little too close to things that went on under Hitler.

I have my fingers crossed - no problems yet - I plant most my indeterminate tomatoes fourteen inches apart and all are staked to a single stem. Have plants approaching 7 feet tall. Have removed all lower one third to half of the lower leaf branches leaving only the fruit branches intact. Number two with the lower leaf branches removed - if i water which wasn't needed much this summer - I never - repeat never spray water on leaves whether tomato or potato - directing only to the base of the plant and ground surrounding. Since tomatoes love carrots I have two rows of carrots planted in the space normally covered by tomato leaves. Will keep posted if a blight appears but so far Im lucky

I see that this is a rather old thread, but I thought I'd comment anyway, since the topic is something I am familiar with. I was the sales manager at a local garden center for about 7 years. As such, I got to deal with the public when we had people walk in and offer plant materials for sale or as a donation to us. There are a couple of reasons why nurseries often won't buy plants from the "public at large." Here's sort of the scoop on this whole matter: 1) It is TECHNICALLY illegal in my state to buy plant matter for commercial resale from anyone other than another liscenced nursery. This is pretty typical in most jurisdictions, where an inspection certificate must be provided with any shipment of live plant matter. However, this law isn't really enforced, so it's often just an easy excuse to give to the person trying to sell you their 22 year old peace lily covered with mealybugs and with severe tipburn from being watered for years with flouridated tap water. 2) Plant matter grown by amateurs can vary from gorgeous and healthy to horrible. The real problem with this practice is that, all too often, someone will have an old, ugly, unhealthy, and infested plant which really only belonged in the trash, but which they would want us to pay top dollar for. Another common thing, believe it or not, was for someone who was relandscaping or doing construction to pull in with a broken up, overgrown yew or similar shrub in their trunk, with a few hacked roots sticking out from a tarp, and try to sell it to us. One time, a lady wanted to sell us a bundle of yew trimmings to sell for Xmas cut greens. I told her she should have come BEFORE we unloaded half a semi trailer of Oregon evergreen products the previous day. Unfortunately, because this practice happens quite often, most nurseries develop a blanket "just say no" type policy -- we did, it was just easier than dealing with it on a one by one basis. But, no matter what the situation, the rejection should always be made in a considerate and respectful manner. Even then, some people would be nice about it, others would become upset. 3) The nature of the business. Buyers usually have targets on species, quantity, size, price, etc. Quite often, people would try to offer something unusual to us which, while actually a nice plant, wasn't something which would prove popular enough for us to warrant actually trying to sell. Also, a lot of times, the people customers see aren't authorized to deal with such matters, and the person who is authorized isn't readily available, so it is just easier to, once again, "just say no." I always suggested that people try to donate their plants (usually houseplants or landscape plants for us, that was our main business) to a school, library, or other public building where it could be enjoyed by all.

Kellogg's Breakfast 2 yrs ago edged out Brandywine as my favorite tomato and was the first tomato ever to be able to do that! Just by a bit, but edge it, it did! I had hoped to compare KB and KBX this year, but the "permanent" marker I used washed off every plant marker except Anna Russian, so I will still be left guessing at what the difference in performance might be for me. Must be I need to learn to relax about it, because I usually even use initials to label the fruit as I pick it so I will know which one it is and if I like it and how the plant does, but the fates are laughing at me this year. :)

One manual (link below) recommends cutting normal vigor Spiraea japonica forms down to within 4-5 in. of the ground right before spring growth starts. With the dwarf versions of this particular species instead being clipped over in spring without getting down into the old wood, as is done with Calluna and Lavandula. Another car commercial... I want to say Toyota, but I'm not sure. A man visualizes in a little thought cloud seeking the opinion of his cat before he makes a decision about buying a car. Just creepy and too dumb to appeal to anyone smart enough to buy a car.

Car ads in general, b/c they often have nothing to do with the actual product!

And always the Burger King commercials. I don't understand how they can be successful in bringing in customers b/c it seems to me it would scare people away. I think they underestimate the creepiness factor of the King head guy.

The ComCast commercial that has some young people dancing (?) twisting around and jumping. They look to me like their pants and/or shoes are full of fireants.

Also the Geico Cave men ads. I don't get the message in these new ones. Etc,Etc.

I just saw the VW ad tonight for the first time. I don't get it either. :)

Minivans are for families, but everybody wants this minivan (not me, but hey..). They are saying couples without kids would get pregnant and have a baby so that they could have a excuse to buy this minivan. That's my take anyhow.

I agree with Steph about the Burger King commercials. CREEPY!

The new Chevy ad with a "sudden downpour of shoes"! Yeah, so have have room in your HUGE car, which you drive alone, so you can pile in hundreds of shoes.

But the "sudden downpour of shoes" message leaves me worse than cold. The message is that women are vapid, stupid, shoe-driven people.

I hate the ones where people destroy their good cars(such as running it off a parking deck or parking it under a wrecking ball) so they can get a new one. Looks like insurance fraud to me.

Ont Gal - We also have the HUUUGGGA commercials here in the Albany area. Annoying to say the least.

As far as the others mentioned (that I have seen), what happened to a little class and discretion? Even my cynical DH was stunned at the "you will ever p@@ on" commercial.

I think the description of the commercial is exactly right. Only people with families want minivans so couples will have a child simply to be able to have this particular minivan. It's silly, but I'm sure they think it's cute.

I couldn't agree more about the BK King ads. Creepy and stupid. Mostly creepy. And the new one with the big burger people standing at the drivethru of another burger place trying to order BK products... also stupid.

Ditto on the caveman ads. Initially interesting, especially the one with the guy talking to his therapist about his mother, but now just petty and dumb.

Seinfeld and Gates? Love it! Brilliant!

There are few commercials that make any sense to me anymore....

I can't imagine companies paying for those ads to be made.

They should have a vote system on the net...We'd let em know...wouldn't we..!!!

The one I don't understand is the Viagra type commercial I think its Cystalis or something like that...after all the info, they show a long shot of a couple ...each sitting alone in their own bathtub...holding hands and staring out at the ocean...

Huh what the heck, are they not supposed to be jumping each others bones...I mean he just took the pill and they each crawled into seperate bath tubs..

The puking, talking baby - I hate that! I have to turn away and mute it.

The falling/raining shoes- all I can think is "that's going to leave a lot of dents." What a dumb commercial.

I hate the puking, talking baby and the creepy Burger King commercials too. There are a couple of others I've seen and don't even know what they are advertising. I cannot remember what they are about.
I haven't seen the Seinfield Gates commercial yet.

There is the Jack in the Box commercial with two businessmen each in strollers being pushed down the street while they go over business when all of a sudden one of them starts crying. The other joins in and both get food. What?

I read recently that the Jerry Seinfeld commercials for Microsoft were a big (multi-million dollar) mistake and were going to be pulled.

Love the eTrade baby commercials even with the burp up (which my kids can attest, I HATE burp up and the like). I just love the juxtaposition of the baby, the voice and the script. I especially loved the one where he rents a clown with the money he saved. He looks back at the clown and says "I really underestimated the creepiness." LOL

Alot of those listed bother me as well...and Burger King is just to creepy for words.

The one that irritates me to no end is the washer and dryer commercial where the woman in an evening gown fantasizes about destroying her existing washer and dryer to get the new Maytag machines. Lady, no need to launch your washer & dryer with a catapult into a grassy field, or push them off the high dive into a swimming pool....just list your machines for sale in the Trading Post like everyone else and buy the daggone new washer/dryer for Pete's sake!!

Glad to know others have trouble with the new VW Brooke Shields and and with the Geico Cavemen. I don't get the VW ad at all and it also seems a bit odd/creepy to me. The earlier cavemen ads (caveman with tennis racket in airport seeing a caveman ad) were funny but I don't get the recent ones. It always seems like an ongoing story but there's never enough information to fill in the gaps. And why a caveman or a gecko would make me buy Geico insurance is beyond me.
