Why Nurseries don't want figs

I offered some of my fig trees to a local Nursery and they did not want them, although they were selling fig trees the same size like mine for $ 120.00-$390.00 /tree, and I was willing to sell mine for $30.00-$80.00 /tree. And, my fig tree were much better, healthier looking, dark green leaves, fruits showing, a really, really nice trees.

I am not in a business, I just wanted to get rid of some fig trees and since friends of mine got them already from me and I did not have heart to trow them in garbege and that is why I offered them to a local Nursery, actually it is the biggest nursery in Ontario. Poor me and my figs:-)

What did you do if and when you were in my situation.

I would exchange or trade with local gardeners... We also have an annual auction for the gardeners in the area where they sell what they have, or just trade with others..

IMHO.. shrubs NEVER need fertilizer .... too much nitrogen.. in the NPK ... or a soil that holds the wrong type of nitrogen.. will cause long leggy greenery .. while sacrificing flowers ... e.g we put high nitro fert ... like 30-3-3 on the grass.. to make it grow fast tall and very green .... if that describes the change in the shrubs you are not appreciating.. then that might be part of the problem ... leaving stock in pots.. for extended periods will also affect them ... but i understand that sometimes life gets in the way of what should be planted timely ... sound like you are kind of new to the garden ... one thing to learn ... or a few ... only annuals require you to be in a hurry ... since they live one year.. they need food and lots of care .. there is immediate gratification ... perennials less... less food .... same water .... somewhat deferred gratification.. it might take it a year or two to get situated in your garden ... and really put out the show ... shrubs.. trees... conifers ... these things can live 100 years ... THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION ... OTHER THAN THE PURCHASE ... some can take decades to begin to show off ... to their utmost potential ... especially after transplant ... i tend to agree with the nurseryman .... they were grown to their utmost perfection for sale .. and they are adjusting to your yard... be patient.... and keep them properly watered.. and back off the fert .. and they will reward you.. somewhere down the line ... i waited 7 years to get a flower off a flowering cherry ... and i complained like heck ... and it eventually came through .... good luck ken

Well, the experts on tree growth will chime in here, but my unsophisticated answer, which has helped me understand tree growth somewhat, is that there are two things that influence the direction in which a tree grows--geotropism and phototropism. These are just two dollar words for simple ideas. The first is the tendancy a tree has to grow directly away from the earth's gravity, which means straight up. The second is the tendancy a tree has to grow towards light. In general conifers tend to be more strongly geotropic--many will grow directly upward regardless of the light direction. Often they will grow up into the crown of a tree overhead even if it could find more room and light if its growth were deflected only slightly. In areas where there is a lot of ice and snow, this geotropic tendency helps trees survive by being well balanced against the added weight. In other areas, especially where there is competition from trees that develop broad crowns, this adaptation does not work so well. Many hardwoods, especially some of the oaks, are strongly phototropic. If overhead light is not available, they will often grow towads the light at a fairly strong angle away from verticle. Eastern white oak is one of the best examples of this ability. But some other hardwoods, such as tuliptree, are more geotropic and will not grow towards the light so strongly. --Spruce

You are right. If any body is trying to isolate a fig tree from FMV, he is losing his time. In any case, it is a minor disease, with good care the symptoms don't appear. FMV is a recurrent subject in this forum, if anybody wants more information about it, the best is to do a searching with the keyword "FMV".

Paul and mjmisgka concerning "my special soil mix". It's material that I can get easily from a friend of mine who owns a small organic farm and nursery just a block from my home. I can't say that this mix has or provides any special effects on the trees but using it through the years I can't complain. Depending on the amount I need at the time the amounts of each ingredient varies. If I am using my large contractors wheelbarrow then I use three buckets full of the Mircle Grow potting soil like in the photos above. CanÂt forget that I also add two shovels of old (aged) sheep manure. To that I add one full bucket of course sand two buckets of mushroom soil and a half of bag of the planting mix (large bag) that my nursery friend sells. I don't recall the name of it but it is a mixture of fine and course particles. Almost like small pieces of bark. He usually sells out of that very quickly in early spring. That's the reason I have none on hand at this time. I do also add a shovel full of fast acting lime and using that shovel I mix it all together. That is enough mix for one twenty gallon tub plus a couple of small containers that I might need filling for trees that need to be moved to a little larger size container. The Nursery Store Usually have associates Farms they do bussines with.Those farms grow plant material by request,filling the needs of that particular store.---Hope this will help

This thread is almost 2 years old but since I am interested in acquiring a few fig plants I will take a chance. Please let me know by personal email from this site if you still have some plants that I can buy from you if the price is right. Grimo Nut Nursery in Ontario does not have the fig types I need and Adrianos response has been taking months&seasons. I know you have a good collection and if you have spares for sale, I may be interested because you are in Canada & it is hard to buy from USA because of Certificates/Permits etc.
If you donÂt have spare plants for sale, is it possible to send me some cuttings (I will pay shipping+)? Please send me an email. I live in Ottawa.
I will also be interested if someone else is willing to sell known type of figs at the right price or is willing to share some cuttings(& I will pay shipping)? I do not have cuttings for trade yet because I have only two fig plants Bifara and White figs from Grimo Nut which I bought last summer (or spring). I will be able to trade in a year or two (no experience yet how fast the two will grow).

I also live in Canada and would like to hear from anyone with identified fig cuttings for sale. I am just starting with figs and have a few cuttings that I have rooted using the frig. ziploc and clear cup method. I also have been extremely disappointed with Adriano's slow and non-response to many requests. I am in New Brunswick. Thanks.

I see that this is a rather old thread, but I thought I'd comment anyway, since the topic is something I am familiar with.

I was the sales manager at a local garden center for about 7 years. As such, I got to deal with the public when we had people walk in and offer plant materials for sale or as a donation to us.

There are a couple of reasons why nurseries often won't buy plants from the "public at large."

Here's sort of the scoop on this whole matter:

1) It is TECHNICALLY illegal in my state to buy plant matter for commercial resale from anyone other than another liscenced nursery. This is pretty typical in most jurisdictions, where an inspection certificate must be provided with any shipment of live plant matter. However, this law isn't really enforced, so it's often just an easy excuse to give to the person trying to sell you their 22 year old peace lily covered with mealybugs and with severe tipburn from being watered for years with flouridated tap water.

2) Plant matter grown by amateurs can vary from gorgeous and healthy to horrible. The real problem with this practice is that, all too often, someone will have an old, ugly, unhealthy, and infested plant which really only belonged in the trash, but which they would want us to pay top dollar for. Another common thing, believe it or not, was for someone who was relandscaping or doing construction to pull in with a broken up, overgrown yew or similar shrub in their trunk, with a few hacked roots sticking out from a tarp, and try to sell it to us. One time, a lady wanted to sell us a bundle of yew trimmings to sell for Xmas cut greens. I told her she should have come BEFORE we unloaded half a semi trailer of Oregon evergreen products the previous day. Unfortunately, because this practice happens quite often, most nurseries develop a blanket "just say no" type policy -- we did, it was just easier than dealing with it on a one by one basis. But, no matter what the situation, the rejection should always be made in a considerate and respectful manner. Even then, some people would be nice about it, others would become upset.

3) The nature of the business. Buyers usually have targets on species, quantity, size, price, etc. Quite often, people would try to offer something unusual to us which, while actually a nice plant, wasn't something which would prove popular enough for us to warrant actually trying to sell. Also, a lot of times, the people customers see aren't authorized to deal with such matters, and the person who is authorized isn't readily available, so it is just easier to, once again, "just say no."

I always suggested that people try to donate their plants (usually houseplants or landscape plants for us, that was our main business) to a school, library, or other public building where it could be enjoyed by all.
