Lefleur1 and prairiemoon--My sure fire earwig bait. I have never set this out in the evening without having some earwigs in the container in the morning. Note--baby earwigs are grey and turn red as they age so don't think it is another bug. Baby earwigs are ravenous when they hatch and can strip a plant down to the stem in 1 night Bait for Earwigs. Equal parts of full salt soy sauce, cooking oil and (molasses or corn syrup). The molasses or syrup is bait to attract them--the oil doesn't allow them to crawl back out and the salt in the soy sauce finishes them off and makes the mixture dark so they think it is just a hole. Put it in a small container��" I use those small scoops from laundry soap and place a stone on top but you can use any small container even the bottom of a soda or water bottle and anything for a lid. Cover 1/2 inch of the bottom of the container with the mixture and bury it up to the brim in the soil where you have a problem with them. Prop a lid over it so it doesn't get diluted by rain and so it is a nice dark place for them to hide for the day--ha. When you prop the lid, leave a small space for them to crawl into the container. You might have to wait a couple of days for it to work, but the first time I tried it I used a baby food bottle and it was full to the brim with little grey baby earwigs the next morning. I was surprised at just how many I did get. Try it. It really works

Did you know that fava beans can produce a reaction that some people can't process and it can lead to death? it leads to acute hemolytic anemia. That means that red blood cells break apart. This happens quite quickly, apparently. I had heard about this some years ago. There is an enzyme that is required to counter this and some people have a genetic condition that they dont produce that enzyme. I have read that the number of people that are known to have this lack of the enzyme is in the hundreds of millions on a world wide scale. In children, in particular, it can cause a high fever, severely reduced red blood cells and death. It has been known since early history that eating these beans can cause a reaction. I read that it was believed in the past to be an allergic reaction. But it is actually an enzyme that is lacking in the persons body. I was very surprised to learn about this. Most people are not deficient in this enzyme, but this can happen to children and be deadly. The beans are eaten raw and dipped in oil and salt in some parts of the world. It is one food that has toxic qualities that most of us can safely consume in some manner. But, not everyone. I would not give them to children. I have had favabeans both raw and cooked. I think that they lend themselves best to be eaten raw, When cooked they have a flavor essence that tastes a bit like hay smells, to me. Otherwise, I really like broad beans. Apparently not all broad beans have these two specific glycosides that favabeans have, and that is why the danger is not there for other broad beans. Just a good idea to be careful with them, especially for the children. I know that there are many issues around certain foods, but when a danger is known it is best heeded. Still favabeans had become a staple in the diet of much of the old world and still appear to be quite popular.

I never know if the feta will hold together enough to make cohesive cubes. I buy brined, sometimes goat, sometimes sheep, sometimes combo. I wonder if you could also whip it in a food processor with a bit of cream cheese or other binder and then roll into balls before dipping in honey, then the pistachios? Not enough to water down the sharpness of the feta, but just to hold it together if you happen to get one that doesn't cube easily. I suggested on the KT that chopping some dried cranberries to mix with the pistachios might be a nice touch during the holidays, too. Lynn, you were vary gracious on your other thread.
