Saturday's dinner

I am really trying to make myself get back into the kitchen every day. Or every other day. Tonight was Pioneer Woman's Sesame Noodles. I halve the pasta and add a boat load of stir friied veggies and shrimp.

LOL - too funny!! That's sorta the way I stumbled on to it too... thinking to myself, "Ya know, I could just cook all this hamburger up now and freeze the extra...well, but since I'm already making this I should mix this up and make this too - won't take any extra time/room...and while I'm standing here, may as well boil some eggs..." Kinda fun, isn't it? :-)

THANKS again for all the hand holding/help. The dinner was quite nice although a lot of work to get the house in order, so I simplified the menu quite a bit, plus I sort of had a headache all day. I had hot spiced cider (yum), lowfat cheddar cheese and crackers (BF's idea on the "low fat" cheese, an oxymoron if I ever heard one), low fat spinach artichoke dip, rye bread (from the store, not my bread machine), store bought and slightly doctored squash soup, marinated mushroom salad, cucumber and sour cream/scallion salad over torn romaine, and the cabbage rolls. Even though the pear cake would have been perfect, I just wasn't up to it so BF bought cheesecake and chocolate cake at the market. I made something approximating Ruthanna's recipe, only with ground turkey flavored with 1 tsp. Penzeys Bavarian seasoning (I had to do something with it), and 1 TBLSP dried onions. The sauce was my home canned italian style tomato sauce (with carrots, onions and celery, but not italian seasoning), cider vinegar and a little sugar, and 1.5 tsp. paprika and dash or corriander. I mixed in a yellow squash, red onion and carrots with the sauce. I did it in the crockpot but finished in the oven with my braising pan. While I was starting the layering in the crockpot, and just had the first layer of tomato sauce in the crockpot, I went to move it with wet hands or something . . . and the crock fell off the counter, shattered into a gazillion pieces and splattered tomato sauce all over my kitchen. Luckily I had another crock from my last crockpot that the heating element went out on. But it took me considerable time getting off all the tomato sauce from the kitchen, especially from all the nooks and crannies in the radiator. I'll be making these again, hopefully with less accidents.

OMG you're really pushing yourself Sharon....so much cooking! I like your menu for Thursday evening....sounds like nice easy comfort food. But I'd have a breakdown attempting all the other things. Well okay, I do prepare a little buffet at home on Christmas Eve and will do a full turkey dinner next day but just for the three of us (Wolf and our houseguest.) Not sure what we'll do on Boxing Day....probably go out. Take it easy and enjoy your holiday Sharon....I'm so impressed by all the food you'll be preparing! SharonCb

After the antibiotics do their thing, ask your dentist about the mouth rinse Acclean (Chlorhexidine Gluconate) which you cannot buy over the counter, at in US, but from the dentist only. You follow the direction, then wait at least 30 minutes. I too have gum problems and it strengthens the gums. I also use an electric tooth brush and found some floss by Crest ( I think) that works good for me as my teeth are very very close together. I know what you are going thru because I have had problems with this for years, but under control now--new dentist about 8 years ago and finally got my gums and teeth under control. He also does a fluoride treatment which helps. Good luck Marie

Angelaid, are you trying to prepare meals that can last for a couple or three meals? Re-inventing a way to present leftovers is fun. In the winter, I become something of a one pot chef. I love good food and healthy food but I never spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Can I do anything to help?

Last night's supper was totally unplanned. I got into our stash of aged wood and built a nice, smokeless fire in the firepit. Smelled almost like incense.

Anyway, I thawed some hotdogs and buns, both of which were toasted in the firepit. Robert likes chopped onions, grilled peppers, and cheese on his dogs; I have to have my creamy slaw and a whiff of mustard.

FYI, if anyone is interested, oak, hickory, and pecan are nearly smokeless of aged for two years....and superb for indoor or outdoor fires. Wonderful aroma and excellent for grilling. Applewood doesn't need a long curing time. It is my favorite for adding flavor to meats, plus it smells so good in a fireplace.....even a small limb will add bright blue flames, nice to gaze into.

Rhizo, that is so sweet. I don't have any problem doing one pot meals or making meals that we can re-invent for a few days. More of a mobility problem. I live in a four story home. Pantry and freezer are on the lowest level, kitchen is two flights above. Family room is one flight above that, so cooking a simple dinner entails several trips up and down the stairs. My back and knees hurt just thinking about it. LOL
Hubby is pretty good about taking a shopping bag down to the pantry for me and loading it up for the week's meal plan, but there always seems to be one, or more, things he can't find.
In my dreams, I would burn this home down and rebuild a rancher.
