Jake's mom needs help please!

thank all of you for your concern. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your advice and thoughts. Our vet called Friday and said he had a dog that needed a home. The dog is a white german shepard 3 months old. We brought her home and she is wonderful. It has been 20 years since we had a puppy and I need advice. I have books on training a puppy but several things are not addressed in my books.

She needs something to chew on. What kind of bones to buy,are they all safe? What can I buy for her to play with? I wonder about the safety of some of the dog toys I see to buy. We live on 6 acres of land, lots of woods. I am afraid she will venture into the woods. Do any of you have some kind of shock collar? What is the best? Now she is on our enclosed porch and only goes out when we take her. Here is a picture. We named her Buie after Dh's dad. Hope she lives up to her name. Thanks for any help.

I buy Nylar bones for my Jake to chew on. He also has several stuffed dog toys. When we took an obedience class they said rawhide bones were OK as long as they were made in the U.S. Pig's ears are a no no because of the high fat content. A kong with some peanut butter put inside it keeps a dog entertained for a very long time.

Oh what memories! I had a beautiful white german shepard named Flicka, when I was preggie.

She was so protective of me, in my condition! sigh

Hey everyone. Thanks for you help. Jake is doing much better. She stopped breathing like that, and is now breathing normal. I think the catfood got caught in her throat. I kept giving her water with a dropper, and finally I think the catfood got soggy and wet and went on down. I've let her go back outside now. She's walking around pecking the other ducks like she always does. (she's the boss) I;m so thankful she's ok. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to her. She is so precious. She hasn't been the same lately since her sister Topaz got killed. They were best friends, and always together. She hasn't been tkaing care of herself like she use to (like she use to keep clean and clean her feathers everyday, but now she only takes a bath a few times a week. She really misses Topaz a lot. But, she's gonna be alright now and thankyou all for helping me. Genny

Let me start off by saying I learned a lot about lawn mower carburetors from this post. Thank you all. In the end, I may have been able to clean mine, but ended up buying a brand new carburetor for ONLY $19!!!! I emptied the old gas and cleaned the gas tank. I also got a set of new gaskets, and now the mower runs just fine. I don't have a tachometer to check the speed, but it sounds similar to the old carb. Its really tough getting to the adjustment screw behind the air filter and another hose that sites in front of it. Thanks again for all the info.

We have always organizerd our toys with plastic containers. Our first toy room had a closet with sliding doors (not walk-in), we removed the doors and used this for toy storage. We just lined the closet with 3 book shelves with shelves that could be rearranged. We lined most of it with plastic containers from Target (didn't use the lids). Then each container had a label...large legos, medium legos, wood puzzles, animals, people. Our last home we actually bought the storage systems from ikea. they are not "built-in." They work wonderful! I highly recommend open bins/containers for kids to easily access and clean-up. The wicker type containers (Pottery Barn, etc) are nice looking, but don't seem to hold up or clean up as well. Also, they will scratch the shelves/built-ins. Use as much for this toy storage as possible and don't be worried about building too high. They accumulate too many items/toys as they grow. I also love shelves that are too high for them to reach. This is wear I store board games, etc. thatI don't want them to reach by themselves. Also, older siblings like to have the higher shelves to "protect" their items from little brothers.

WOW! Thank you everyone for your insightful and speedy responses!!! First of all, we don't have any reason to believe that there is any abuse going on at mom's house, for the simple reason that if there was Dan would have been gone already. Claudia is a great mom and keeps her kids well-being as her top priority, so we have put that aside. Matt is a very active boy he loves running, biking, etc... I defininately like the idea of him having a punching bag or using his pillow to redirect his anger and we will try that. Also, I think instead of talking (because Steve has tried that several times) we might try having him act out how life is at his mom's with some dolls he and his sister often play with. His behaviour could also be related to losing his place as 'man-of-the-house' since Dan moved in (before that it was just mom and the kids for several months). Also, after their seperation mom let the boundaries loosen up and the kids got away with a lot of stuff that they shouldn't have, maybe she has tried enforcing more rules since she has been with Dan; which would be very normal for the kids to resist by misbehaving... Plus Claudia has told us that when she has had enough and can't take it anymore, she sends Dan in to speak to the kids; for sure this doesn't gain her any respect in the eyes of the kids or help her cause... With their step-sister visiting (I don't know how often she is there each week), it could very well be that Matt wants more attention from his mother, however, I don't think the epsides happen while she is visiting. To answer the questions that were asked: Matt is fine at our house, he knows the rules and follows them, otherwise he knows the consequences. Just normal kid stuff, but we have never seen the fits that his mother has descibed to us. As far as rules go, I don't know all of the rules at Claudia's house, but the kids even tell us that mommy's house is mommy's house and daddy's house is daddy's house; so they understand that not all of the rules are the same between the houses. Maybe that is something we could work on between houses, check for consistency within the two house holds. Claudia and I have an okay relationship, we talk when the kids are dropped off and we have spoken on the phone a few times, but we aren't really at the sitting together for coffee while the kids play yet... Also, I am careful not to give her any advice about the kids, as she has expressed to Steve that the kids are not mine and I don't have any business making decisions regarding the kids (this was awhile ago, but I will wait until she asks fro my two sense; until then I am perfectly happy to filter my ideas and suggestions through Steve). Steve and I have both expressed our support to Claudia. We spoke to Claudia today to get the details about the therapist and she said that she found it helpful, but she won't be going back as she feels it will only be repetitive. ronm80.. congratulations on a beautiful addition. As an owner of a now 9 month old puppy, I know what you're feeling! Excitement, nerves, and some doubts at times, but you'll do just fine. She is beautiful! We used a Kong for training and for teething. We'd stuff it with a bit of peanut butter or cheese and our pup (now 7) would get a nice long chew and treat with it. They say Kongs are indestructable but our dog managed to chew off one of knobs on it! Another thing that we found that helped during teething was a frozen facecloth. I'd soak the cloth, wring it out, twist it tight and put it into the freezer. Jaggs would chew it until it thawed, then it would be washed and refrozen.

She's a beauty! My last two puppies were Terriers, they both stayed in crates during the day to prevent them from wandering away and chewing. The crate method worked wonderfully well on my two little devils. But, that was five years ago. One of the puppies died in a strangulation accident, the other is our 5 year old female Wheaton Terrier, Molly.

a great teething toy ...take an old sock and tie one or two tight knots in it, she will chew it, throw it, shake it and with some training, even retrieve it. And as mush stated, you can freeze it. I've gotton thru many pups with this facinating homemade safe toy!

Beautiful pup. Hard rubber Kongs are the safest for the chewing stage. Also give her large raw carrots to gnaw on.

Stay away from all ropey toys. The floss can block their intestine. Even nylon bones can break and should only be used under supervision. Same with pig ears and rawhide.

For stuffed toys nothing beats Fat Cat toys. I'll post a link below. Just stay away from the ropey ones and the fur trimmed ones until you know her habits. Some dogs are chewers for life and others outgrow it and just like to carry,fetch and shake.

Since you have acreage it will be just like raising a child. You keep her with you or enclosed until she is fully trained. No venturing out on her own until she is fully bonded to you and sees you as pack leader. Lot's of bonding time along with a crate or a dog house to call her own. Then you expand her boundaries bit by bit. Remember a well exercised worn out dog is a happy dog.

German Shepherds are known for their weak tummies. Feed her a good diet and keep her out of trouble for the first year and you'll have a great dog. She's a lucky girrrl.

When I started reading your post, all I saw was the tops of the ears at the bottom of my page, and thought "are they talking about a dog, or a bunny" LOL.
