Being addicted to lip balm is a myth. I have to use it on my lips several times a day, lower lip only but use it on both lips. If I am out and around I use lipstick. I use Blistex medicated lip balm (green). It is creamy and less waxy. Nothing I have tried lasts longer than a couple of hours.

Lip balm coats your dry lips but lips don't soak moisture in as easily as the skin on the rest of your body, and your lips begin to expect you to moisturize them and stop producing their own moisture. Same thing with skin moisturizers, the less you use lotion the more moisture your body will start to produce and pull it from the humidity in the air, but it is so little that not many people are willing to go that route. But it is also the product of your climate. Here in Phoenix there is so little moisture in the air we have to use more moisturizer, we can't pull it from the air.

As for lipstick, it is eaten or worn off before your body can pull the moisture out of it. I put Vaseline on my lips before bed, it helps keep them moist overnight, and I find that a bit of gloss over my lipstick helps it stay longer.

I have heard that Burt's Bees is a good product, you might want to try that over your lipstick to seal it.

The best stuff I have ever used is a product called Ultrabalm from Lush Cosmetics.
I bought it over a year ago and it has never gotten rancid and it works great for lips. I also use it on my cuticles.
I have no monetary interest in Lush Cosmetics but have found all of the products I have used to be of the highest quality.

Carmex is what the troops use in the desert. If it's good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for me. I buy it at Wal Mart.

I wear lipstick when I leave the house (that is, when I go out in the car), but not when I'm home alone. When I shower I rub my towel on my lips to exfoliate (read about this in a beauty book years ago), and then moisturize my face--and lips--with a good cream.

My favorite lipsticks are Clinique, Lancome, Estee Lauder, and L'Oreal. I buy the first three on eBay, usually Free With Purchase lipsticks--full size, but much cheaper than the ones in luxury cases.

I have a wood stove, so it gets pretty dry around here in winter. My lips don't feel dry often, but if they do I use a lip balm without petrolatum (the drying, addictive ingredient).

Wow - never realized people sold their free Clinique samples on e-bay. And I've just been hoarding mine over the years and/or trading with friends. I'm about to the point I need to actually buy a Clinique lipstick - guess maybe I should buy from ebay and save some $. I like Carmex for dry lips but use Clinique lipstick - doesn't seem drying but doesn't seem to last long. I'm constantly drinking something though so that doesn't help.

I use the green Blistex too and I LOVE all Lush products too. That is such a fun store.

I will have to look for Carmex, I had never heard of it. I am now using Burt's Bees and Murad. (love their skin care!)

I wore Estee lipstick for years then suddenly my lips began to break open and bleed. I assume a formula change had occurred. I now use Revlon, they have a long wear formula that I love but I fear that they are getting rid of it so whenever I see it I stock up.

I have lips that chap from many lipsticks/balms too. I am extremely allergic to Carmex! That stuff eats up my lips. I can use regular old Chapstick, Blistex in the bluish green tube, I have just bought some Avon Moisture Therapy which is good too, as for lipstick it seems about the only kind I can wear without my lips peeling off is L'Oreal.

We grew up on Vicks. Have never had chapped lips or cold sores. I put Vicks on every night before I go to bed and keep some in my purse for those dry days. I also dab some under my nose when I go to bed. Clears up the nostrils real good. Hubby won't kiss me on the lips of course and he hates the smell. When I'm feeling I need to get back at him for something I put some on my cheek where he kisses me goodnight.

I keep all my lipglosses in the bathroom and re-apply frequently, always before bed and when leaving the house. Right now I have a ton of Avon lip products. Well, maybe 15 or 20.

I use Vicks...my folks did for dry lips and I do too. As crazy as it sounds, it works. I never have suffered from dry lips in the winter when I use it. But the chap-stick seems to make it worse. (on me that is) Never have tried anything else.

Walmart ha a product called Perfectly Pure Vitamin E moisturizing stick It is great they are a white tube liptick size last I saw 99 cents. They might be available elsewhere. tasteless and oderless. Last I saw they were on the shelf with OTC vitamins etc .

I have used carmex for years I do not put lipstick on with out first applying some carmex.

Don't get the opportunity to use (be blessed? with second hand) lipstick much.

Burt's Bees makes a very nice tinted lip balm. It comes in a thin tube. I never wear lipstick, as DH doesn't like it, but I'll use the Burt's Bees for a little color. But 99% of the time, I used Blistex Complete Moisture in the blue tube.
