What's Oprah's new #1 favorite gadget?

She's announcing it on her show tomorrow, but we can guess here.

I'm guessing it's Kindle.

Whatever it is...thousands will run out and buy it, and she will make a big profit from the deal she made with the manufacturer.

I have no idea, but was amazed to hear her say last night that she had just recently gotten her very first cell phone. She said she needed to, and sounded like she must have had to give in to getting one or something. She did not seem happy to have it for its convenience.

This will sound a bit silly, but we garden a relatively large area, and I use and really love the almost fifty-year-old Ford tractor, which moves compost, manure & mulch, mows the field and woods roads, and picks up and moves rocks. I made fun of my husband when he bought it second hand about 12 years ago, but I probably use it about as much as he does now. As I age, having a machine to help with the heavy chores is really nice. Like duluthinbloomz4 I love my scuffle hoe - cuts both coming and going, and doesn't need lifting - just shuffle it back and forth to get rid of weeds. I like goatskin gardening gloves since I can throw them in the washing machine when they get too grubby, but they are tougher than fabric gloves and quite flexible. I love my straight edged spade, which I use for edging as well as for digging in soft soil. It has a D shaped plastic handle on a wooden shaft which is warmer and has less vibration than metal. I'm not sure that any of those qualify as gadgets, but they are my favorite and most-used tools.

I have a foursome of girlfriends that meets every month or two for dinner, and last year we started a new holiday tradition (can we call it a tradition if it's happened only once?) where we each give the other 3 the same gift -- something we've found over the course of the year that we've loved for ourselves, or just a good idea, or whatever. The price limit is low -- I think we said under $20 or $15. So it was a bit challenging! (For anyone who's interested, here's what was exchanged: a keychain w/ tiny flashlight attached; a book on meditation; personalized notepads; and a fancy bottle of olive oil.) How about wrapping it in a dishtowel? Put everything in the center of the towel and gather up the ends, like a little satchel, and tie it with raffia or ribbon.

Thanks Fenworth for that heads up on carbon steel. My grandmother's knife does get rusty if left wet but it is easy to get the rust off with a regular kitchen scrubby. And I just remembered my most recent gadget, and this really qualifies as a gadget. Its a wood kitchen ruler with magnetic button for hanging on fridge, a hook for pulling out the oven rack and forked end for pushing rack back in. It was $2.50 at a cute little local cook store. However, my new fridge doesn't support magnets so I hang it on the access panel on my radiator cover :)!

Wantto, yes, I knew about the LST being returned to the US from across the Atlantic. The elderly crew came into the boat supply store where I was working at the time. And they were a chipper bunch of old guys, and I was so pleased to meet them. After WW2, the company that my dad worked for used some of the WW2 large landing craft to load highway vans on, and then ply between Apalachicola FL (eastern end of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway) all the way to Brownsville TX or Port Isabel TX, which was the western terminus for the ICW. This was the beginning of the "container freight" concept. The company was bought out by Federal Barge Lines, and then by one of the big cargo companies like PanAtlantic Steamship, and then the rest is history. Steph, would you define SCOOCHED? Interesting term. :) In one episode of HOLMES ON HOMES where they redid a kitchen for a handicapped woman, they put some kind of hardware in the upper cabinets which would come down to counter height so she could reach them from a wheel chair. I think REV-A-SHELF makes such a mechanism. I would think that in a kitchen with really really high ceilings this would be a good thing, even for a person who was not disabled, but just vertically challenged. :)

okay, so I had to go look up what Kindle was. Looks pretty neat!! Would be great for travelling. But I'm a cheapskate, so I'll stick with my free books from the library!

I'm with you, Teresa. No way would I be tempted to buy one myself. But I wouldn't be surprised if Oprah's audience tomorrow finds one under their seats.

Since Amazon already has Oprah featured on their main page tonight (Thursday) with the caption about "What's Oprah's favorite new gadget?" I'd have to agree it's the Kindle.

I just googled Kindle as well, and Amazon says that they "expect sales to get a significant boost with Oprah apparently endorsing the product on taday's show". So it's safe to assume, it's a Kindle.

I love my Kindle; received as a gift in August (as discussed in a thread a few weeks ago). But never have I been "ahead" of the game in terms of owning the must-have items Oprah features!

I hope it isn't Kindle because in these times of hardship for many people. Kindle would be rather frivolous. Not to Oprah, of course.

She said.. "it would pay for itself, many times". If everyone is supposed to have their own, it's pretty darned expensive. My son said to wait and see if the price comes down, like other electronic gadgets have, and PC's. Even with the $50.00 discount, the timing is bad, economically.
