Flu Shot........

I just had my 30th (yearly) shot! I was 19 when my lung collapsed the first time, and the Dr. told me I needed to have a pneumonia shot and then a flu shot yearly. I have had the flu shot every year since! Other than a sore arm once in a while, no other side effects.

Did you have yours yet? Are you planning on it??

Never had a flu shot. Admittedly, part is the distaste for clinics, needles and the like. I did consider it a bit this year but after considering everything, I think I'll pass again. I know people who have gotten the shots and have gotten the flu. Doctors admit that it's a best guess at what the strain will be and many admit that simply washing your hands regularly will do far more to prevent the flu than flu shots will. They now admit that last years flu shot was the wrong one and totally ineffective. This isn't to suggest that vulnerable people should not get them, but they push these things way too hard and at what, $30 or so a pop, that's pretty near a scam in certain ways. Let's face it, if I sold a pill that I hype as preventing you from catching a cold, I'd be sued till the cows come home, wash their dainties, pack up and leave again! Yet, jabbing people with ineffective immunizations goes by without a second thought. We live in a strange world!

I'd like to, Sandy, but over the years I've developed a sensitivity to eggs. I haven't been able to get one for several years now. I decided to get a shingles shot this year, but the vaccine is on a 20 week backorder!!!!

i am on the fence as to whether it is good to have the H1N1 shot or not. BTW my background is a BS in biology w/ a specialization in both plant sciences and medical microbiology (taught at IU med school). i have a special interest in unusual viruses. i do not even read information about medical things until i look at credentials and personal opinions mean nothing to my scientifically trained mind. i am interested only in verifiable info thru proven scientific routes (CDC, AMSRID, WHO, some universities w/ elite medical schools only etc..) there is soooooo much incorrect non-scientific info out there it's sad what people think and know on issues like this. it truly doesn't matter for most people since they are only making a limited # of doses (enough for 10% of the population i believe) and the ranking for getting it starts w/ pregnant women, then children, adults under 40 then anyone over 40 w/ pre-existing lung/heart conditions making them susceptible to it. that is the order of risk for death also. it will also be interesting to see how much this shot costs, i'm gonna guess more than most would pay out of pocket, i understand it will not be covered by most insurances. would i get it given i have asthma and am 40? i will wait and see...DH & i have had several flu's this yr (more than any previous yr infact) and believe we may have already had it, so i'm willing to wait it out. i have had flu shots in the past after getting a B version of Hong Kong flu and getting extremely sick in my 20's but i don't get it every yr. this is too new of a vacccine for me, now next yr after i see how things go this fall/winter i might. ~ liz

From what I've read the strain of influenza that is affecting most dogs is different from the one in the vaccinations. That leads me to believe the boarding place is probably acting out of fear rather than their educated knowledge. However, as frustrating as that is, I can totally understand it. My dog has been going to the same day care two-three times a week for 4 years now. I know the owners and talk to them often about the business so I can understand the dynamic from both sides. So as upset as you are, if you didn't have that shot requirement and your dog were to get the flu while under their care, would you be upset? And if you also found out there was a flu shot available but dogs weren't required to be vaccinated, what would your response be then? I know what my response would be. That they dropped the ball and didn't act responsibly to protect my pet. From that perspective, I think it is good that they are doing what they feel is needed to protect themselves as well as all the dogs in their care. I know that doesn't help you with the added costs, but have you considered hiring a pet sitter to care for your dogs instead? We had cats and birds as well as our dog to board and it was WAY too expensive. Instead we turned to a pet sitting site where we were able to interviewed several people and find a wonderful woman to care for our pets. We boarded the dog, but she fed our cats and birds twice a day at a fraction of the cost. The arrangement was perfect because we didn't have to up root our pets and they still had human contact while we were gone. She did a wonderful job and we actually became friends. Some years, I have had soreness for a day or two. Not this year - absolutely nothing. I got the "over -65 shot" and a shot for whooping cough - too many unvaccinated children out there and I know my immunity has worn off by age 74. Sometimes it's the vaccine or its adjuvants, sometimes it's the person giving the shot. Some are better than others at doing this.

Another off-topic vaccine question. What about HPV vaccinations? Anyone who has had more than one partner, or has a partner who ever had another partner, could be at risk. My doctor told me that even long-term married people can pass the infection back and forth, if one or both was ever exposed in their younger years. The virus never goes away once infected. The immune system usually makes it dormant but it can flare up decades later and infect a partner, even if you've been monogamous for a long time. And if someone becomes divorced or widowed, and remarries, they are open to new exposure regardless of age. Hopefully everyone is doing their part to eradicate HPV as well, men included. Even if you've already been exposed, there are many different strains and the vaccine protects against multiple strains.

I got mine last week. DH had his the week before, and had a bad reaction...but thankfully it only lasted about 48 hours.

We got ours a couple of days ago...were going into a drugstore for something and saw a sign that they had flu shots. No line, and so we took advantage of it.

My Dr. insists on me getting a flu shot, because of the drugs I take.

Got mine a couple of weeks ago. I didn't get them for years because I just never got sick. Well, my doctor said, "If I were your age, I would surely get one!" So much for his tact! But I did get one, and have continued to do so.

Haven't gotten mine yet, but will in another week or so. My doctor said to wait until November because that is when the flu season starts, and the vaccine is only good for 3-4 months.

I've never had any reaction from them.

I got my flu shot the last week of September. Consider me protected! DH got his free just this week, went to a clinic and showed his Medicare card.

Nope. No way. You can't make me! The last time I had one was in high school, on a Fri. night. We went to the foot ball game. DH, then boyfriend, had to go to the car and get me his extra jacket, because my arm had swollen up so bad! I also have a bit of a problem with egg yolks. That explained it when I found out.

Got ours already, but neither can take shingles shot as DH has non-hodgkins lymphoma cancer under remission and I could set off shingles on him. That is one of the warnings.

DH & I will be getting ours in the next week or so. Neither of us has ever had a reaction. My arm is usually sore for a day or so afterward, but that's it.

Ivan and I got ours two weeks ago. We get them every October. Next year it will be time for our pneumonia shots too, as they are only good for 5 years.

I don't take vaccinations. Never had the flu shot and never had the flu. I haven't had a cold in well over 10 years. I have had pneumonia twice, but both times was from cleaning up moldy stuff. I didn't have any symptoms except couldn't breathe deeply and had fever. Don't have any hay fever or allergies either.

I predict I won't catch the flu this winter or even a cold.

I've never had the flu shot and don't want it. I have heard of too many who are sick afterwords. When I was in the hospital last week I had probably 8 or 10 nurses who ask me if I wanted the shot and I told them all no. Finally the last nurse I had told me that I can get the shot at anytime and she thought I should ask my oncologist first and see what he says since I just got off chemo and my immune system is compromised. I agreed with her. I still don't plan to get one unless he insisted, but I don't think he will.
I never get the flu and very seldom get a cold.

If your immuno system is still compromised...Dr will probably tell you to get it. That's why I have to get it.

I took them for a couple of years, but they made me sick, so I quit taking them. Then I got the flu every year. A few years ago the nurse where I worked told me they no longer made them from a live virus, so I started taking them again yearly. They haven't made me sick since then.
I haven't taken mine this year because I wanted to take Anna with me when I went to the doctor, but she's had some congestion and a cough. I'm waiting til this coming week when she's over that to go.
