Our grandaughter wants to invite some friends for Thanksgiving...

Like...the whole Iowa State wrestlers....

I told her to go for it.

A lot of them will be going home but those that are out of state won't get to.

We have a big family Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday in a hall we rent...and just our family will be here on Friday.

I don't know yet which one she wants to invite them to...

The team members that are not going home will be in Omaha for practice at NE U at Omaha. So they will be close for either of them.

She knew a lot of the wrestlers when she start school at Iowa State because her brother is a wrestler and he knows a lot of them. So the boys have taken her and her roomate under wing and watch out for them.

I think it would be fun to have them...I love having those young people around. We always had a house full when my kids were at home...I miss it.

So...what are your plans this year....

that sounds great! my dh, who is in grad school now, usually invites college friends for holiday meals too, they really enjoy it and it's nice to have lots of different people involved in our dinners. not this thanksgiving thou... we are going to atlanta for several days to meet up w/ my sis, BIL and niece & nephew from Zionsville IN! i have never ever not had a traditional thanksgiving dinner in my life LOL. i am kind of a fanatic about holiday meals, growing up we had huge dinners w/ cousins, aunts, uncles, friends of family, neighbrs etc...even now there would still be too many people for me to ever graduate to the adult table LOL and i'm 43!

i have been fretting about the meal and finding the proper restaurant or us and 2-5yr olds :-/ BUT last night i thought of finding a Residence Inn that has suites w/ full kitchens and there is one in the Midtown section so that's PERFECT! we have a 6 hr drive up from orlando and will bring lots of turkey day food! we're excited to see the kids and go to the GA aquarium and Zoo again. just hope it's not too cold :-/ a heat wave around 80 would be awesome LOL. ~ liz

Patti, it sounds like a win-win situation and tons of fun, besides that! Enjoy every minute of it. I think you have a very generous spirit.

Liz, Atlanta will be a fun trip and so nice to be with your sister. You can do a turkey ahead of time, slice it and keep it in the cooler until you get there. When we have reunions in Indian Rocks Beach, we almost always get places with kitchens and then make a huge brunch and eat out on the patio on the tables they all have. Usually there are over 20 of us but it's never been a problem and always have enough food.

My daughter, SIL and GS will be here for Thanksgiving. We'll have all the food that's usual for a Thanksgiving in our family. I am really looking forward to it!

Ahh yes, the math skills are really horrible (I don't know if this is just an epidemic in WV or if the whole US is calculator spoiled). I'll never forget one time I was at McDonald's and my total came to something like $4.96 and I gave her a $5...she messed up the register and was completely lost as to how much to give me back. I said "it's just 4 cents, don't worry about it"...but she said "well, then my register will be off"...so I waited for her to go get her supervisor who proceeded to use a calculator to figure up my change. I was completely dumbfounded. I'm not sure those were the exact amounts..but it was very simple math...so sad. The bad thing is I've seen several examples similar to this. For a short while while I was in college, I worked at Shoney's. I ended up quitting after about a month or so because the supervisor kept forcing me to work over when I had exams yo study for and things I really needed to get home to...but when I went in to quit, the manager came into the office and tried to talk me out of it because they had been having trouble finding people who can count back change! A story atleast some of you will appreciate: A Thanksgiving Story By Andréa Nannette Mejia It was the day before Thanksgiving - the first one my three children and I would be spending without their father, who had left several months before. Now the two older children were very sick with the flu, and the eldest had just been prescribed bed rest for a week. It was a cool, gray day outside, and a light rain was falling. I grew wearier as I scurried around, trying to care for each child: thermometers, juice, diapers. And I was fast running out of liquids for the children. But when I checked my purse, all I found was about $2.50 - and this was supposed to last me until the end of the month. That's when I heard the phone ring. It was the secretary from our former church, and she told me that they had been thinking about us and had something to give us from the congregation. I told her that I was going out to pick up some more juice and soup for the children, and I would drop by the church on my way to the market. I arrived at the church just before lunch. The church secretary met me at the door and handed me a special gift envelope. "We think of you and the kids often," she said, "and you are in our hearts and prayers. We love you." When I opened the envelope, I found two grocery certificates inside. Each was worth $20. I was so touched and moved, I broke down and cried. "Thank you very much," I said, as we hugged each other. "Please give our love and thanks to the church." Then I drove to a store near our home and purchased some much-needed items for the children. At the check-out counter I had a little over $14.00 worth of groceries, and I handed the cashier one of the gift certificates. She took it, then turned her back for what seemed like a very long time. I thought something might be wrong. Finally I said, "This gift certificate is a real blessing. Our former church gave it to our family, knowing I'm a single parent trying to make ends meet." The cashier then turned around, with tears in her loving eyes, and replied, "Honey, that's wonderful! Do you have a turkey?" "No. It's okay because my children are sick anyway." She then asked, "Do you have anything else for Thanksgiving dinner?" Again I replied, "No." After handing me the change from the certificate, she looked at my face and said, "Honey, I can't tell you exactly why right now, but I want you to go back into the store and buy a turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie or anything else you need for a Thanksgiving dinner." I was shocked, and humbled to tears. "Are you sure?" I asked. "Yes! Get whatever you want. And get some Gatorade for the kids." I felt awkward as I went back to do more shopping, but I selected a fresh turkey, a few yams and potatoes, and some juices for the children. Then I wheeled the shopping cart up to the same cashier as before. As I placed my groceries on the counter, she looked at me once more with giant tears in her kind eyes and began to speak. "Now I can tell you. This morning I prayed that I could help someone today, and you walked through my line." She reached under the counter for her purse and took out a $20 bill. She paid for my groceries and then handed me the change. Once more I was moved to tears. The sweet cashier then said, "I am a Christian. Here is my phone number if you ever need anything." She then took my head in her hands, kissed my cheek and said, "God bless you, honey." As I walked to my car, I was overwhelmed by this stranger's love and by the realization that God loves my family too, and shows us his love through this stranger's and my church's kind deeds. The children were supposed to have spent Thanksgiving with their father that year, but because of the flu they were home with me, for a very special Thanksgiving Day. They were feeling better, and we all ate the goodness of the Lord's bounty - and our community's love. Our hearts were truly filled with thanks.

Smolking some chickens for Thanksgiving

Oh, a side firebox smoker. We have that one and have been smoking chickens a half dozen times a year for well over 10. If it has a temp gauge on the lid it is not that reliable unfortunately. Nice to have a stem on wire thermometer. It smokes much higher temp close to the firebox. I use timber splits and soaked slices of fruitwood so a bit different in method and heat regulating, but the process is the same...avoid opening! But you know that. Put the larger bird closest to the firebox. Not sure if i would stuff them. Your call. It adds density to the bird and may not cook/smoke evenly. We sometimes 'stuff' in half a lemon, couple apple slices, onion and some herbs. But most often nothing. Not really an issue about safety and un-cooked stuffing, as ours is always a cooked stuffing/dressing also, but not much of a cavity in a chicken. But it just might be soo much smoke flavor. It will slow down the cooking time. Make enough stuffing to have a side casserole baked in the oven? (i make my stuffing the night before and chill in the fridge as a 'kit'. All the saute veg, sausage, and wet ingredients in a bowl, the cubed toasted bread (dry ingredients) in a ziplock on top as a lid,...toss together with stock just before 'stuffing' to prevent getting soggy...and i do a casserole also) You mentioned you have smoked chicken before? So you are aware the meat of the bird is often very pink, especially close to the bones. The chicken is cooked, the juices run clear, the temp is correct...but we still have had guests think the meat is raw. Smart to point that out ahead of time. I successfully smoked a few weeks ago, snowing and windy. The worst conditions. (coulda noodle-whipped the weather man)...rolled and tucked the smoker to the less windy side of the barn and had the firebox into the wind to help with the heat draw. I did spatchock one chicken on a fat bed of wild thyme on foil closest to the firebox. Just to make sure we would have a meal in time. A double stacked sirloin, a whole chicken, 4 pork tips, smashed potato packet and a veg packet at the far end. We ate on time, all went as planned, but tricky. The spatchock and the sirloin can off well ahead of the rest. I smoke chicken at a higher temp, 275ish, rather than low and slow like ribs. The pork tips i wrap in a parchment, then foil, packet, with small opening at top. They slow braise for a couple hours, then i open wide and get lots of smoke and still have the juices. At the far end, away from the firebox, the temp is much lower. (especially when it is snowing). I smoked a turkey a few years ago, along with a traditional one in the oven. Worked out nicely with just fruit, garlic and onion in the cavity loosely. Also at a higher temp. I've read that low and slow smoked birds can dry out close to jerky but i have never had that happen even when i used to smoke them at a lower temp. Just a bit dry.

You could also maybe give your friends a break. I had a close friend who was very self involved. I told her three times what I wanted her to do (come see my very big project). She had time. She was in the area. She made really lame excuses why she didn't. Then she moved away with no notice and instead of calling me where she knew I'd be, she left a message on my answering machine saying the only time I could see them before they left was at a party they were having during my work hours. I didn't know how to respond and the advice I got was "who says you have to?" Then she wrote some letters without one word inquiring or commenting about me. Not the 2nd grade "How are you?" that we're taught to open with. We've been in touch a few times since, but I basically dropped her. I regret it. I know I needed to do it rather than be hurt by her, and I have better friends, but I do miss her and I wish I could have just let it slide and accepted that that's the way she was. Another friend stopped talking to me because I didn't understand what she needed from me after a death in her family. I didn't know why until at least a decade later, when she got back in touch, briefly (I'm guessing a therapist told her to mend fences). When she told me, she mentioned that she'd done what she needed for herself for me when my uncle had died. I didn't know that she was doing it so couldn't pattern it. It wasn't articulated that that's what one does (in her lights) when someone loses a family member. I would have tried. I miss her too. I have closer and better friends, but I wish she could have explained or accepted, and given me a break.

Our home is always open for others, makes it more special and we learn a lot! Good for you. It does not happen around here too much anymore....kinda bummer.

That sounds like fun, make sure you have lots of turkey for those hungry boys!!

This is the first time ever that I am dreading Thanksgiving as I am going to have an empty house. Both kids are in the UW band and they have a game the Saturday after Thanksgiving and practice on Friday so I won't have the hub-bub of having them home with their friends hanging out. I told them to just go to Grandma's which is only 2 hours away instead all the way home which is 5 hours.

I am on call, so cannot leave. DH will be hunting and at the deer shack, unless they are successful earlier in the week. So that's my pity party, boo hoo.

Many years ago, when BIL was in the AF, he brought home 6 young guys from the base + all our relatives so we had a housefull Great fun and they kept our little one busy while we (hubby and I) were busy.

That sounds like a barrel of blessings to this old heart.

My daughter has mentioned coming up for Thanksgiving, but with her work schedule, I don't see that happening.. However, we still will cook a Turkey with dressing and all the fixings...and will leave a light on for her and her family... justin case..... We often have friends and neighbors in... so many don't have family nearby or are unable to travel or simply don't cook a special dinner for themselves... and as much as I love to cook, and love to share our bounty with others, it is only natural that we share it all...

We are so thankful for all that we are blessed with and to us it is about sharing those blessings.

And for you to share your blessings with those on the wrestling team, well I feel confident that you will receive more blessings that you are so willing to share...

I say go for it and just have the best time ever..

That's what Thanksgiving is all about!!! And it sounds like sooooo much fun! Wish I was closer...I would throw in another turkey to help out! They will be so THANKFUL!!

Oh, this all brings back the memories when ex and I were stationed in San Jose - USMC. It was our first Thanksgiving away from home and family.

I had told him if he knew of any "orphans" on the base that would enjoy a place to spend Thanksgiving, please invite them. He ended up inviting 20 Marines to my little, teeny apartment!

What a riot that dinner was. "Who knows how to peel potatoes?" "Bugs, will you be the stirrer of the gravy?" "Chopper, help me get this bird out of the oven to baste......move over, Bugs." "Who wants to chop celery?" "Frenchie, you and your celery need to move off to the patio table on the deck. Please, stop playing with the dog until you're done." "Buggar, just put the freakin' sweet potatoes in the dish, smush the butter and maple sugar on it - marshmallows will go later if you don't eat them all." "MEDIIIIIIICCCC"

Man, I was cooking with my oven, my micro wave, the BBQ and the oven in the motorhome. (Mental note to anyone who cares - Never turn your motorhome oven over to 2 Marines and a six pack of beer)

It was the bestest dinner ever! Well,......not counting the pumpkin pie and, Tex, who fell off our second story balcony into the bushes below.

Marilyn....you and anyone else would be more than welcome..

We might not get the boys after all...I guess they have a wrestling meet of some kind on the Friday after...I'm guessing they'll all be trying to make weight on Thursday. But if they want to come...they'll be welcome too. I'm kind of bummed that they might not.
