Candidate 'Robo' Calls - not political

I really am interested in learning how many people who receive the recorded telephone messages from candidates actually listen to them?

I know that I consider them an annoyance and hang up as soon as I know that its a recorded message. We have a "mixed- marriage" (politically) so we get hit by all sides.

ML (6 robo-calls just today....we both voted 2 weeks ago)

we get several a day, and just hang up. also hit the Mute button on the remote during the political ads on TV. Tuesday can't come soon enough for me.

I get several calls a day! If I'm home and answer the phone..I just hang up. If I'm not here, their recorded message is left on my answering machine...and I have to let it play all the way through before I can delete it!

Relax everyone, this thread begins with a political screed having little relationship to the "environment". Change "environment" to immigration or public education and the rant is equally applicable. Mother Nature has pro-enviro lobbyists, but they all compete from the same limited pool of financial support and figure-heads. What Mother Nature doesn't have is widespread and deeply committed citizens working toward pro-enviro ends. When environmental conditions become so bad (if they ever do) that the powers-that-be cannot divert public attention away from the mess, they political action might bring about marginal improvements. Environmentalism/love-of-nature/outdoor-ism/etc. is in the heart of each of us who claim to have voices to be heard about environmental issues. Environmental ethics win the hearts; hard politics win the programs. OTOH heavy-handed govt action has proven ineffective, often counter-productive in promoting the elements of environmentalism at the bedrock of our visions for the country.

What is Trump's admiration for Putin all about? Who knows for sure, but it probably has to do with his business involvements with russian oligarchs. From WaPo: There is strong evidence that Trump’s businesses have received significant funding from Russian investors. Most notably, Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. made that very claim at a real estate conference in New York in 2008, saying “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets.” Donald Trump Jr. added, “we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.” Trump also made millions when he agreed to bring the Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013, a deal financed in part by the development company of a Russian billionaire Aras Agalarov. Agalarov is a Putin ally who is sometimes called the “Trump of Russia” because of his tendency to put his own name on his buildings. At the time, Trump mingled with the Russian business elite at a swanky after-party. “Almost all of the oligarchs were in the room,” Trump bragged on returning home. As a sign of the importance of Russian investors, partners of one of Trump’s projects then under construction in Panama visited Moscow to sell condos at the building in 2006. Trump also made significant money from one Russian oligarch in 2008, when he sold a mansion in Palm Beach for $95 million to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev. Trump had bought the home at a bankruptcy auction less than four years earlier for $41.4 million.

I honestly don't think that politics are more dirty than in the past, but I do think it's gotten a little bit more subtle. Gone are the days of the bottle of rum and ride to the polls, but I'm sure that's been replaced with whatever the 21st century version is. In Canada one dirty trick takes the form of robocalls directing people to the wrong polling station. I enjoyed this article about past dirty tricks: " In the election of 1800, one of the dirtiest in American history, the venomous hack writer James Callendar (secretly hired by Thomas Jefferson) assailed then-President John Adams as a “repulsive pedant” and “a hideous hermaphroditical character,” whatever that means. " http://freakonomics.com/2007/11/06/the-complete-history-of-dirty-politics-a-qa-on-anything-for-a-vote/ if I were in the states I would be far to the left of the Democrats, as would most Canadians, so you can take this advice with a grain of salt. but I feel the most effective way to get better leadership and representation in the Republican Party is not to vote for the parts of it that represent things that you hate. If they lose a significant chunk of the popular vote they may start to think of ways to get back their base instead of pandering to the fringe. But if the base remains completely loyal no matter what they will continue along whatever wacky path they're currently walking. I know Michael Moore is a bit of a wack a loon, but he did just write a little thought-provoking piece about how much the Republican Party has been fighting women, fighting against maternity leave, fighting against birth-control availability, forcing people to make weird decisions about fetal remains which as someone who had recently had a miscarriage of a much wanted baby that ended in an emergency D&C as I was bleeding out in the ER I highly object to, etc. etc. and he was saying that horrible misogynist like Trump is a natural outgrowth of those policies, not an aberration. And that may explain why the Republican Party is haemorrhaging the female vote. If only women were voting Clinton would be elected with 458 electoral votes, if only men were voting Trump would have 350.

More than you probably want to know, Jmc and MtnRd, but worth keeping in the back of one's head in case things ever become more permanent than expected (though some Americans abroad are hoping that the one silver lining to the election is that this situation might get dealt with). I moved to Canada from the U.S. more than 20 years ago. Taxes and banking for Americans abroad have become exceedingly complicated in the past few years by FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report), enacted after the U.S. went after UBS to catch fat cat tax cheats hiding assets and laundering money in offshore tax havens, but what the legislation is actually doing is complicating life for the 99 percent of Americans living regular lives outside of the U.S. and ignoring the fact that the fat cats can easily hide their assets domestically (Delaware etc). The U.S. is one of only two countries in the world (along with Eritrea) with citizenship-based taxation instead of residence-based taxation. Americans abroad don't necessarily have to pay taxes, because of double taxation provisions, though there are significant treaty gaps -- what the U.S. deems “foreign earned income” is exempt from U.S. tax but other forms of “foreign” income such as investments are in fact doubly taxed. And the annual tax filing burden can be onerous and expensive -- there are significant (Forbes calls them "frighteningly high") penalties for compliance errors in what is now a very complicated filing system, especially with FBAR, which is filed not with the IRS but with, believe it or not, the Treasure Dept's Financial Crimes department. Under FBAR, an American abroad must list all “foreign” financial assets to which one is signatory if the aggregate is above U.S. $10,000. This includes accounts held jointly with non-Americans (including spouses) and accounts for organizations of which one might be a signing officer, including nonprofits (and your children's swim club). Reporting requirements include all account numbers and bank addresses. There is the concern of data safety as well as a thriving business of unscrupulous accountants and others in the compliance industry gouging the worried and unwary. So far, Canadian banks have been much more relaxed with customers than those in Europe, Asia, and Mexico. It's more of a "don't ask, don't tell situation", though one of my kids was asked at the bank two years ago, at age 16, when arranging signing authority for an after-school club, about their dual citizenship (that child renounced citizenship after turning 18). In other countries, it's too much bother for the banks to deal with U.S. citizens what with the possibility of 30 percent tax penalties, so checking, savings, retirement, investment accounts, credit cards, loans, mortgages, etc. have been canceled, often without notice and in the case of investment accounts, triggering taxes. All further complicated by the fact that until recently the Patriot Act made it impossible for anyone without a U.S. address to open a bank account in the U.S.; as of this month one can get an account with American Citizens Abroad. Anyone considering a move abroad should probably read up on FATCA and current tax laws. Some good sources of information are international tax lawyer Phil Hodgen's blog, Victoria Ferauge's blog, the Isaac Brock Society blog. For health care, yes, usually three months, but all provinces have free emergency medical services.

Oh I hate those calls. I have never made up my mind or change my mind when I receive those calls. Also, I hang up right away and never listen to the calls. Right now, I disconnected my phone and told who ever wants me to call my cell. I'm curious to know if people receive calls on their cell phones? I've never received these calls on my cell.

I have not had one for almost a week after I wrote a letter to both the person and the party saying I was tired of the negatative news information, stating that I only wanted to hear what he/she would do not what the other canidate did do, and that every bit of stuff that came to the house would go into the trash and every ad on TV would be muted and that I voted for the person, not the party. No phone calls for over a week.

They go on and on. I don't answer. I just lift the receiver and put it back. Very, very annoying. Come on Tuesday!

I hang up immediately. Hate to answer the phone this time of year (no caller ID). Isn't it crazy that they spend a bazillion $$$$$ for all that advertising & the robo calls and the junk in the mail..... and NOBODY pays ANY attention to it. I stand by the trash can in the Post Office & sort thru my mail, tossing EVERY piece of political JUNK. The postmaster needs a bigger trash can @ election time. It's sad & pathetic what a waste of money it is.

We just had a Municipal Election and some of the candidates used them. I really dislike them. There's no hello, they just start talking. I had so many calls from one I called the candidate's office and told them if I got one more pre recorded call I wouldn't even consider giving him my vote. I think the "do not call" list should include these types of calls. They are annoying.

I just hang up, also had a call from "Pat Boone" didn't listen so have no idea who he was calling about.., don't the "parties" know we the people DON"T LISTEN to these calls...that and all the oversized mailings that have been sent out, it all goes into the recycle bin...What a LARGE waste of money these mid term elections are causing.

I used to be quite active politically and although this stuff doesn't influence me positively (I will vote against someone who utilizes obnoxious telemarketers) but to say it doesn't work is simply wrong. It works and works quite well. Too many people don't take voting seriously. A bunch will vote for the sake of voting but not know who or what their voting. They go by the name that sounds familiar or a positive memory, whether it be the nice family picture, the color of the campaign sign or someone knocking on their door and enough votes will come in to swing the election.

And the other amusing myth about "negative campaigns" not working. LOL WRONG!

not only am i muting them on the tv, am doing it in the car...the last 2-3 days have been unending calls, ads, ect...

i will voting tomorrow, despite all the ads, lol...

Have you called the candidate ... to start talking as though it was a hobo call ...

... then ask them how they like getting such a call?

Inform them that you've had XXX number of such calls, today xxx number yesterday ...

... and that you find them a royal PITA!!

Also ... do the candidates give detailed breakdowns of the sources of funding of their campaigns? How soon do they become available? Can you get a list of the major contributors prior to the election ... when it really counts?

Ligh fires under your canadidates'/representatives' rear ends - let them know that you're interested ... and watching.

We've had municipal elections in many parts of Canada recently ... and it turns out that much of the candidates' funding in cities come from developers/builders ... and when the developers have a project in view ... and the local inhabitants object ... the councillors seem to be rather hard of hearing.

Have a great election, folks.

I hope that the people who have the really best interests of your country's long-term future (and that of the world as a whole) are successful.

Have your candidates been honest enough to have warned you to expect some more tough years ahead?
