Update On Both Sisters

Not good news. Younger sister has breast cancer in the other breast, in very early stage. It's called breast calcification. It's the same stage my DD's was caught at 4 years ago. (I haven't told my DD yet, I'm afraid to) DS had it 16 years ago, and it was a lump. She had a lumpectomy, radiation, and chemo. She and her DH are going to Virginia to see her DD and SIL and 2 grandkids on the 28th. When they get back, she'll see her oncologist, weigh her options, and decide her plan of attack.

Older sister was on her way into have some blood work done, and started having chest pains. She drove right to the ER instead. They're going to do a heart catherization (sp) or may have already done it. She'll be in at least over night. Maybe longer, depending on what they find.

I'll be wearing red too on Thursdays. For all of my friends/family here at the KT, and my own family too. Depressing day today.

Leslie, keep the faith. Your younger sister has caught this early - let's keep our fingers crossed the course of action happens soon. Trying to think positive thoughts and I will too.
Now, for your older sister - she is in great hands and Thank G0d she went to the hospital and did not ignore how she felt. It's scarey but she is in the best place right now. I sent my heart to her for a strong recovery. I am sure once this is fixed and she recovers she might feel a world better. Sometimes we don't notice if we start to slide downhill a bit when things are gradual.

Hi Mary, I'd be more than happy to share my Mandarin Orange Cake recipe! Mandarin Orange Cake 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. baking soda 2-11 oz. cans Mandarin oranges, undrained Frosting: 1-15 oz. can Mandarin oranges, undrained 1 pkg. dry instant vanilla pudding (1 small box) 1-8 oz. container Cool Whip Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and baking soda. Add eggs and vanilla; mix until well blended. Stir in 2-11 oz. cans Mandarin oranges with the juice. Pour batter into a greased and lightly floured 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Frosting: Blend together 1-15 oz. can Mandarin oranges with juice, 1 package instant vanilla pudding, and 1-8 oz. container Cool Whip. Chill for 2 minutes (or longer) until mixture has set a little. Spread on cooled cake. Mom got a stand/upright mixer some time ago (a year or so ago) from Ginny's and it's been a big help in doing cakes, cookies, and other desserts! And I don't act at the theatre, I'm more behind the scenes helping clean and put up sets on the workdays. Not sure when I'll be learning to drive, but maybe it'll be sooner than later. Thanks everyone. Ruthie,i'm doing pretty good,thank you.Mostly just the usual aches and pains from the neuropathy,and the side effects of the meds,but i try not to let it get me down. Just went for a stress test thursday,they wanted me to actually walk on the treadmill,which i didn't think i could do because of the knee problems,however i did it and the dr said i did good!! So that's another blessing!!He put me on Lisinopril an ace inhibitor. When they did the muga scan b4 i had chemo they found my left valve was running a little slow,so the cardiologist has been keeping an eye on it.Other than that my heart is in good shape,he says. Sounds like she has a autoimmune problem. As bad as she is I am surprised they wouldn't consider giving her anti-rejection drugs (Immunosuppressive drugs) like they give people who get donated organs or who have severe autoimmune disease. Sending good thought and prayers her way.

I'm still relatively new at this so I can't help much either, Anne. Wish I could. I'm so glad to hear how well your sister is doing! Especially considering just how frightened she was prior to her surgery, this must just be the biggest relief for her. My DH and DS were my caretakers, and I have to tell you I don't know how I would have made it without them. Marjorie has been so fortunate that you were able and willing to take care of her. ((HUGS)) to you for being such a good sister! I did have the chest x-ray but it was after the bi-lateral mastectomies. They did it as a base-line for future comparisons. When I had my surgery, they took two lymph nodes to test and explained that the cancer cells would travel to these Sentinal Nodes first, before getting into my bloodstream to move on to another part of the body. Since these nodes were clean, with no cancer cells, that was a positive indication that the cancer had not started to metastasize. My tumor wasn't huge, but they still were recommending Chemo for me until I had the special test done on the tumor, which placed my chances of recurrance in the LOW category. That was the determining factor and the only way I escaped with no Chemo. I'm also taking the Femora, having some minor side effects but nothing I can't handle. I did read that it's best to take it during/immediately following the evening meal and that has worked well for me. After I get through all these follow-up visits with the surgeon, plastic surgeon and oncologist, I know I'll be having annual checkups but they haven't explained what all these will entail. I did read somewhere that the mammograms will be replaced by either ultra-sound or MRI, depending on the doctor's preference.

I had dinner with younger sister tonight (our Red Hat Group). She seems pretty okay with it. Unless she was 'putting on' for mom, who was there too. They'll do a biopsy when she gets back from Virginia.

Older sister went in to surgery this morning at 11:00 AM. She thought she was going to have a heart cath. then they said they were going to go on and do an angioplasty (sp). That didn't work and they had to do an emergency by pass. She didn't get out of surgery until 5:00 PM. She's been on cumadin (sp) and has had prior heart problems. Her blood was thin from the cumadin, and she was bleeding a lot, which caused problems, and they gave her platelets. I'm probably not getting this all correct, but it's as close as I remember the Dr. saying. Mom and I didn get to see her for a few minutes. She knew we were there, and nodded her head as I held her hand and talked to her for a little while. Poor thing. So if I'm not around for a few days, you'll know why.

Oh man, what a rough week for the whole family, I am so sorry you have to go through this. I know the emotions are running high.
Please know that you and your sisters are in my thoughts and prayers.
Be as strong as you can for them now, and you can melt later.

Just got home from the hospital. At least we got to see her heart doctor. She's still in ICU and we could still have problems for 2-4 days. He did remove one tube, which I think was connected to some type of balloon that made her heart pump steady. They decreased the times it pumped, until they could remove it, and her heart did fine by itself. One problem is she has a compromised immune system. We're praying she doesn't get pneumonia, or an infection. But it is all in His hands. Well, I guess it's always been there, but one thing I like about this doctor is, he too gives Him the credit. I guess that's what my sister really liked about him too.
He also was my dad's doctor 12 years ago. He was honest and said there wasn't anything he could do for dad's heart. If they'd tried to do surgery, his heart wouldn't have started again.
2 thing my sister loves. Nebraska football, and Neil Diamond. Nebraska won over Baylor (sorry my Texas friends), and Neil Diamond was singing somewhere, maybe on the TV (I couldn't see it but I could hear him).

PS They have her heavily sedated so she's not aware of anything. Her nurse said she was mad about having a tube in her mouth (respirator), and he said that was a good thing. That may get to come out tomorrow. We'll see he said.

I havn't been on here in a couple of days,so am just learning about your sisters.I'm so sorry to hear what they are going thru.I know how nerve wracking that is.But they are both in good hands,and i along with all the others am sending up prayers and good thought for you and them.God is still on the throne,and prayer changes things.
