Here Come The Grooms

As many of you may remember George and I had a Civil Union last year. Then Delaware passed the Marriage Equality Act.

Sooo, on October 22nd, the date we consider our anniversary, George and I had the full blown ceremony.

Since I'm not all that techy and don't use Photobucket or a program like that, I'll be posting a few more photos.

This is before the ceremony.

Karin, Linda, Stopped by my local library today, learned they do have the electronic system you described. I also searched on their intranet for books on African Violets. They have lists for local libraries as well as with a service called "Link" that searches academic libraries. I've requested African Violets by Joan Hill from a local library. Next, I will request Clements' and Robey's books from the "Link" service. They said that one is more expensive for them to use. Thanks for the tip Joanne

Hi Fred, I agree with you about those older, lower leaves needing to come off. Since I got the plant in a very unhealthy state and have been "bringing it back" I've been taking off old leaves as new ones come in. The plant has the same number of leaves now as when I brought it home, but now more of the leaves are healthy than not. My non expert logic was not wanting to "shock" the plant by pulling off all the unhealthy leaves (a few months ago, they were all bad). You think this particular plant is healthy enough now to remove the last few old leaves? It's been in my care since March and had started budding - until I chopped the buds off! All my plants now, except for one, are disbudded as Barbara suggested I'd get heavier bloom this way. As I start allowing them to flower again in 6 weeks or so, I'll be sure to remove the flowers as they start to wilt. I did e-mail you for those sheets you so kindly offered to send. Thanks. Thanks again for all your advice and help. I've looked the AVSA website for local groups and it seems the last one of the year in my area is tomorrow. I e-mailed the contact yesterday, but have not heard back. I also re-arranged my living room yesterday to accommodate more plants. And so it begins... Amber

Weddings have gotten out of hand just as Christmas gifts have. It has nothing to do with traditions or marriage, just commercialism promoted relentlessly by the many members of the bridal industry. Somehow the wedding day has turned from a day of sacrament---or, if you're not religious, at least it's a solemn vow before witnesses--- into a sort of reality show starring the bride. I think it is vulgar beyond compare for a girl whose working parents make less than $80k between them to expect them to spend about $15,000 on her wedding! Yes, this is a real situation and the wedding takes place in October. So why does someone like this expect to spend several thousand dollars on a dress when she needs repairs on her car? Because she's seen it on TV and thinks this is the norm? I know the girls grandmother and she is worried sick about how all these things will be paid for--- DJ, photo booth, etc. she is actually planning to use some of her student loan money for the honeymoon-- she and the groom are both students with limited hours in part time retail jobs. We have one DD and two sons and none of them is even close to marriage, but I almost dread it. I am honestly considering the "check and ladder" inducement for them to eschew a big wedding! DH and I eloped to avoid the specter of a huge wedding. We were married quietly at our college by a friend who is an Episcopal priest with a few other friends as witnesses. Both recent grads, and we went on a weekend honeymoon months later when we could both get away. Married 31 years and neither of us regrets not having a wedding.

I think that a lot of people get themselves into a jam by focusing on "who is supposed to" pay for what. I don't think there were ever any RULES about that, and even the customs varied from community to community (geographic, ethnic, etc.). Today, I think that the most you can do is to try to figure out what is customary in your and your future in-laws' community/ies, if what you are really after is finding out "how things are done these days." But I think that is probably a red herring. I would worry less about "how things are done," and figure out what is right for YOU and the families involved in THIS wedding. I think that it is lovely that you are so generous. Duckie's advice is excellent. Decide what you can afford and offer to contribute it. Or, if you prefer, you might offer to host a rehearsal dinner -- and then plan what you want and spend whatever you please, as you are the hosts. Have fun! I kept checking the date, when I saw your posts Steve. I remember you and your spouse getting married last year.

Congratulations!

When our state was working on changing the laws a few years back..one of our HS teachers was out with pamplets and a signature board..
She asked my husband and I if we would sign our names. I am all about equality..so I grabbed the pen...signed and handed it back..my husband grabbed the pen and said, "I'm all for everyone knowing the pain of marriage, and being just as miserable as everyone else." With a straight face..she didn't know what to say..lol...then he gave her a big grin...the color came back in her face..

Gosh, I thought I was losing my mind when I saw Grooms 2 and 3. I thought there was a ceremony last year. Now that I've seen Grooms and the explanation, I get it. Congrats. I think you should do this every year. What fun!!
