Looking for an exciting book

I try to go on several walks per week, and to make my walk more entertaining, I listen to audiobooks. Right now I'm listening to Overboard! : a true blue-water odyssey of disaster and survival by Michael J. Tougias. It's so very exciting that I lengthen my walks just so I can listen to more of the story. I will be very sorry when the audiobook is over because it was a pleasure having it for my walks. I am looking for suggestions from KTers as to books they have found exciting, whether true or fiction. The only type of book I try to stay away from are those with graphic violence or disturbing content.

If you want a little humor look at the Southern Sisters series by Anne George, there are several of them they are all a hoot. Anne passed a few years ago so there will be no more. The main characters are 2 older Southern sisters and the situations they find themselves in. She does have other books besides the sisters series.

And one of my all time fave authors is Janet Evanovich the Stephanie Plum series. I have every one of them plus the other series she has done and love every one. They are definitely laugh out loud books.

The "Miss Julia" series by Ann B. Ross are delightful books--they make you smile and laugh.

Jon, thank you so much for making us aware of this book. I remember well Roger Mann's discussions of the origin on rose names, discussions that involved you and I think Kaylah as well. I'm recalling a series of threads called How Do You Pronounce followed by HDYP #2 and I think also HDYP #3. They were wonderful. Those who joined the forum after Roger Mann's departure miss so much. I will certainly make a point of getting his new book as soon as it becomes available here in the United States. His earlier book Roses never was released here, but I tracked down a copy anyway. While I never met him, I'd had enough online conversations that he seemed to be an acquaintance, so I wanted to read his book. I'll do the same again with Naming the Rose if necessary. Please do let us know how you like it once you have your own copy in hand! Thanks also for the link to hear his radio broadcast. I enjoyed that. Rosefolly

mrs.micki, I personally use a med to fine grade sandpaper. All you really need to do is scuff the surface. I use Kilz primer on almost anything I paint as it helps to hold the paint a lot better and keeps any imperfections from bleeding through, such as the knots on your desk. I also use a roller to paint as I like the texture it leaves. My hubby prefers to use a brush as he likes a more smooth finish. So it depends on what look you're after... and who is painting! Paint is very forgiving. If you don't like it, you can re-paint it. I have an old dresser that has been painted every color of the rainbow. The latest color is white. I loved "A Week in Winter" by Maeve Binchy. It is her last book. It was one of those that I didn't want to ever end.

Anything by Nelson DeMille, Baldacchi or Vince Flynn. Particularly their earlier books. If you haven't read The Lions Game by DeMille, I highly recommend it. It's a big book but goes so fast because it's exciting.

If your talking audio books I love anything by Richard Paul Evans.
One of my favorites is "The Walk" he has 3 more after that one in the series.

The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson

A little historical fiction that will definitely keep your attention.

I agree about the Anne George books as well as the Miss Julia series. I loved all those and hated to see them end.

I like adventure books like this too and hope to read Overboard eventually. Thanks for recommending it.

I enjoyed the Shackleton book, trapped on the ice in Antarctica for months. "Endurance" is one of several books about this true story.

Did you ever read "Into Thin Air?" (Krakauer)

"Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea" is another you might like.

Gary Paulsen wrote "Hatchet," a book for younger readers but definitely held my interest. Another he wrote is "Winterdance" about his experience in the Iditarid dog sled race in Alaska. If you like dogs, you'll enjoy this book a lot.

If you go over to the Gardening forums, there is a group called "Books and Reading." The people there could probably offer many suggestions.

I loved "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed. It's about her long solo hike through the Pacific Northwest. Nothing bad, no violence, but enthralling non-fiction.

Thank you so much to all who posted for your wonderful book suggestions. I look forward to listening to these (or even reading). To those with reading ideas who haven't yet posted, I look forward to hearing from you. Excellent suggestion, Socks, to post on the Books and Reading site. I follow that forum (but not as often as KT) and think I will do that when I'm ready for some new books again. Jannie - I already read Cheryl Strayed's book, which I loved. The walk that she did was really amazing!
