Grandparents' Day -- It Was a ZOO!

I need some input from those of you who are often IN grammar schools. Friday was Grandparents' Day at our DGS's school, from two to three p.m.. He's six; in first grade. He's gone to this school since pre-K.

I don't know what I expected, and perhaps this was completely bonkers because it wasn't just normal school hours, but...It Was A Zoo! Lots nice grandparents were being given 'tours' of the (K-8) school by their grandkids. DGS's destination for us was the gym, where a hundred small bodies were hurtling around at warp speed, unsupervised. "Watch how fast I can run!" Several frail grandparents clung to the edges of the room to avoid bone-breaking collisions. Down a hallway I noticed a room marked "Office" where staff was hunkered down for the duration. Middle schoolers without grandparents in tow shoved smaller kids and adults aside in the halls. It sure didn't feel like any school I ever attended, nor any our DS attended.

OK, then back to DGS's classroom -- a very small room *packed* with about 30 desks, 12" square cubbies for personal belongings, just ZERO room for kids to move -- but move they did! Loud, rough, crashing into one another. I was slack-jawed to see a boy run up to a classmate and rub up against her; she did the same. They were simulating sex and looking around as though to say, "See this?" No notice was taken. A moment later the loudspeaker blared dismissal, but first, a rote recitation of prayers. This is a parochial school. I felt like asking, "THIS is a parochial school?"

I was expecting a lot of active kids. They are kids. I wasn't expecting ROWDY and SULLEN. I *sure* wasn't expecting X-RATED.

What's it like in your schools? Did I just hit a rough spot?
