Thoughts about jealousy of the other grandparent(s)

As I mentioned in my other "thoughts on" post, I am a new grandparent of two (14 months and 21 months) and have been learning things the hard way. I've read for hours on this forum, and have received SO much help here! Many thanks to all who have posted their wisdom.

So, when I did some musing and writing about a couple of issues, I thought I would share here in case this might be able to help anyone out, the way I've been helped out here--especially with the holidays coming up.

It's Not a Marriage, It's a Village

I've been thinking about jealousy between grandparents and wanted to put down some thoughts about it -- sort of thinking out loud so I'll learn something.

I'm jealous of my ex husband's wife, especially since she lives close to my grandson and I live far away. (And she is sweet, and fun--stiff competition.) My husband is jealous of the step-grandfather on the in-laws side for our grand daughter, (we live *really* far away from our grand daughter, and he lives locally to her) even though he's one of the most amazing people we've ever met.

Why the jealousy? Is it because these babies are so charming, so beautiful, so full of love, that we are in love with each of them and somewhere in our reptilian minds we think that when you're in love, it should be monogamous? (Note to reptilian mind: we are in love with TWO babies this way. Do you see the flawed logic here???)

Well, time to have a chat with the reptile mind. Children are so big hearted, there is plenty of love to go around to all the grandparents, even when through divorce, remarriage, and great-grands still alive, kids have lots of grandparents. And who could wish for less for them?

On the Baby Signing Time tape, there is a song about grandparents, and the refrain is "I've got many many people who love me!" Joy that these children have so many people who love them should be my only emotion when I think of the village of caring adults that surrounds each of them. Joy, gratitude, generosity. What a better way to treat myself than to fill my mind with stinginess, competition, fear of not being the favorite.

Just before Halloween, while visiting our grand daughter, we went to a pumpkin patch with as many grands as we could muster: Six loving adults and one happy toddler. We shared her just fine. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and I am very thankful to be part of that village.

Ok...well I thought I would give my thoughts...you are so right...there is no reason for jealousy because how could any parent not want the grandparents to love their child...

But here is where the reptile...a snake in this case spits venom....when a DIL sees that her children may lean more favorable to their husbands mother...that is a no-no.....in my case, I am the more fun grandmother...my grandchildren gravitate to me when around both grandparents....

My DIL hates it and likely me as well...and for this reason...she just backed off in our lives...our son basically goes with her flow...so we are grandparents with a lot of love to give but only when we initiate a time with them....my son only comes over with his family on a holiday or a meal is involved...but I have had some foot issues in the last couple of years...not as active...and just had surg. To correct these issues...no visit...DIL or son has not gone out for a card for the kids to send...nothing ever nevrr...

This got worse when DIL's mother left her husband and moved to the area...she used me for years as a babysitter...hated to see any attention her children gave me or me to them...she did not seem that interested in her own grandmother...so maybe that was the telltale sign of who she is..

While it takes a village, I am no village idiot...I know when I am being rejected....now my other DIL is expecting and I can tell it will be the same way...she knows how close my grandchildren were to me...she has a mother..she will protect her mothers best interest...I have decided to just let it be....

I am not going to put myself out there for anymore hurt...life is too short...and I am dealing with other issues in my own home to worry about someone elses....she is the most controlling person I have ever seen...she is even trying to control what people buy the baby for the baby shower tomorrow...which thankfully I am not attending..

I refuse to show up in a boit cast and crutches only 3 wks from surgery for this woman...its not the babys day yet...its still hers...I bought some great gifts for the baby, but was told that she told her own mother if she did not get the right item, she would take it back...

I even hesitate to give these items to her....for fear it will not be to her liking....never mind they are very nice items....this is just what my sons went out into the world and married...the total opposite of their mother....

I got the plants at OSH in Redwood City. They were in gallon-sized pots, and were pretty rootbound by the time I took them out, which has been my main worry. I tried to loosen up the roots a bit, but I didn't want to do too much and risk damaging them, so I'm not sure that the roots will ever unbind themselves. 120 bare root strawberries! Holy smokes, lol. It's my dream to have a little patch somewhere. I tried to grow them once when I was about 8. I think I got one strawberry and then let the plants die. At the time, I had no idea that they could go on for years and years, not that it probably would have made any difference. A year is a lifetime to an 8-year old. Now that I'm older, I'm a (tiny) bit more patient, so I may have to follow in your footsteps and start a-growin'!

Personally, I wouldn't micro examine it year by year...I would at least do it by 1/4 or 1/2 centuries. Europe experienced a mini ice age around the 1500's. Child experts say six is one of those really tough years where bad behaviour is common. In fact the three worst years, according to our family therapist, are 2, grade one, and grade 7. Something to do with the start of grade 1 , and all day school with responsibility tends to short circuit the kids for a while. I remember every one of my kids being a total brat in grade one, after being "angels" ha ha at younger ages. BY the time they got to grade 2, they had learned how to control their own behaviour to be socially acceptable. Just as an afterthought, the main problem in grade 7 seems to be refusing to complete things, whether that be homework, or getting self dressed, or being responsible for their own stuff. THats the most common issue at that age. Anyone else have a kid that lies about homework? What we did when ours were picking on their younger siblings...if it was confrontational or violent, an immediate time out. What also helped was never reacting to the whining, but giving extra attention whenever good behaviour was there. IN other words, when the child is whining about little bro having an extra cookies, ignore it. BUt when the child is playing nicely with little bro, or even coexisting in the same room without any problems, make a point of doing something nice for the child. Kids that age want attention and they arent particular if its positive attention or negative attention. Of course, any direct confrontation has to be stopped. Be careful that you dont just seem to punish the six year old, even if it seems they are causing it. IF they really ARE the ones causing it, then time out for them, but sometimes six year olds can convince themselves that the two year old is doing something to them. IN that case its better to just separate the two for a while, and work on the positive stuff. Six year olds cant reason like an adult can. Their problems with their siblings seem very big to them, even though we as adults cant see what the problem is. It takes about three weeks to change a bad habit of a kid in that age range. IN the meantime, just hang in. This too shall pass.

IMA your wedding story reminded me of a funny story. Since I was in high school I have been friends with this girl. In high school none of my friends liked her because they said she was full of herself, but she was always nice to me. So my friends put up with her because I liked her. Anyways as we went into adulthood we stayed friends. Had kids at the same time and even worked at the same place after I graduated college. Always the same thing, my new friends and work friends all disliked her. As we have gotton older she almost makes things a competition, always telling me how GREAT this or that is and how her kids are straight A students, bla bla bla. And I notice that it it always when I have a problem she throws in my face how she does not have that problem. For instance I was breaking up with a boyfriend before meeting my ex and she told me that she felt like my boyfriend always had the hots for her!!! And when I lost a bunch of weight she bragged that she was down to a size 2 (knowing darn well I am bigger than that). Fastforward to my wedding day. Her and her husband stood up in my wedding. The place we had our reception had a beautiful outdoor area for nature pictures. We took many different poses as my bridal party watched. When I got my wedding proofs back I noticed that she had the photographer take all the same poses with her and her husband!!! IT was sooo wierd. And I did not say anything, but everyone else looking through my proofs commented on it.

Personally, I am so grateful that all four of my children's children have grandparents that dote on their grandchildren. (We are not those grandparents.) Each of the four has grandparents involved in their children's lives and it certainly takes a burden off of us. Yet, we know each of our 18 grandchildren has grandparents that give them personal love and care. We seldom see any of them because we live so far away and are thankful for those people every day.
