Asking for good thoughts and prayers..

... for a friend of mine named Sandy. She had a heart attack 5 days ago and is in ICU on a ventilator. She needs a quadruple bypass and has 100% blockage in at least some of the arteries, she is also bleeding internally (the doctors do not know why). She has been getting worse each day and they keep putting the surgery off... she is not in the best hospital for heart issues either. She is only in her 50's so I'm hoping she can pull through this.

I don't usually ask for good thoughts and prayers, but I've seen the power of the KT at work lately.

4 years ago, I lost my dear cousin and her son to a similar accident. They were driving home from a vacation and her husband fell asleep at the wheel and rolled their vehicle. My cousin was 9 months pregnant and had taken her seatbelt off to be comfortable and her 13 year old son had taken his seatbelt off to lay down in the seat and sleep. They were both thrown from the car and killed along with the baby my cousin was carrying. Her other 4 children and their father survived. It is devastating. I tell people all the time...if you are tired....DO NOT DRIVE. The cost of a motel rooom is not worth the risk. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I have read that they both got infected from another worker. If another worker at the field hospital was not noticeably sick, they may not have been wearing protective gear around them. The CDC is apparently investigating. But for those concerned about this, keep in mind the vast differences between America and rural Africa. The CDC and WHO have said that a big problem is that the people there don't trust these medical workers and want to hide their family members who are sick and take them to traditional healers. All the while, they're caring for them and exposing themselves. We also don't wash and prepare the bodies of dead family members ourselves. There is a big difference in sanitation as well, since many areas there don't even have running water and certainly no hand sanitizer. The flu has killed many more people than Ebola. A lot of us have probably had or know someone who has had the flu, and most people just don't think about how deadly it can be because it's something we're used to. I think that even if a traveler were to bring Ebola to the US, we could contain it a lot more rapidly than they have in Africa. That is because of the cultural differences I mentioned above in addition to the fact that we have modern hospitals readily available, not field hospitals without running water. It is just not possible to have the same level of sanitation in a situation like that. We also have plenty of trained medical professionals who are used to treating deadly things like Hepatitis C and HIV.

She's fine. She and BF dropped by around noon, I gave her the soup, some hugs,my ice bag and ice. She's swollen, cranky (her natural state HAHA) and groggy. But it's over and I saw her and she has a great BF. I'm sure he will give her good care. I did notice a bag of McDonald's food in his car. (Funny, she never eats meat. Does McD sell a veggie burger?) She's going home to her apartment to rest, then back on the treadmill tomorrow-college and work. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good wishes.

Sending good thoughts, Lydia. Can she be moved to a better hospital? My dad had emergency bypass surgery--at age 86! Hoping your friend has the same good outcome.

Thanks everyone. Alisande, another friend of mine is working on trying to convince Sandy's DH to move her elsewhere.

It sounds like a grave situation, but she is young and has that going for her. I would strongly encourage her move to a hospital that does heart surgery well. That is very important in determining survival rates. But the fact that she is already very sick and bleeding is certainly not in her favor. Sending my prayers.

They figured out the bleeding was from a stomach aneurysm (I'm assuming that is a abdominal aortic aneurysm). I was just reading up on that and the statistics are pretty grim, especially since it took them this long to figure it out.

Your prayers are working! She just got moved to one of the better hospitals in St. Louis. Hoping she can get the care she needs there.

I am so happy she got moved to a better hospital. Barnes Jewish and the U of Washington hospitals are excellent. When you are very ill, it is important to be in a hospital that has the specialists you need.

Linda, she is in Barnes. No more news yet today, but I'm sure the new doctors are coming up with a plan of action.

Sandy had a couple stents put in today, her blood pressure is down, her color is better... the new hospital says she did NOT have an aneurysm. She is still in critical condition, but things are looking better. Thanks everyone for the prayers and good thoughts.

I just saw this now, but please know that I am keeping you,your Dear friend, Sandy, & her family in Special Thoughts & Prayers as well.
I've been so inspired by the "prayer warriors" on here of late, that I'm always going to take the time to say a prayer even if I don't get to post.
