Goldy, I don't have cable at all. I suggest, you go and buy yourself a cool indoor antenna, and hook it up, and take the cable off.

Then watch like that for a few days before cancelling. I find I get plenty that way.

The cost of having all these channels is terrible....BUT, hubby likes his sports and all that other things so we have the works....I watch 2 programs a week and would be satisfied with basic....

I agree, get yourself an antenna and give it a try.....

I live in an area where an antenna won't work and only had basic cable for years. I guess it depends on how much television you watch, but basic was sufficient for my needs. Unfortunately, I fell in love with using a DVR which isn't available with a basic package. Why not take a look at the basic channel line-up from your cable company and compare it to what you watch? Then you can make an informed decision.

Twelve miles from town - no cable.

Three stations (snowy) on TV via rabbit ears. And pretty well everything but national network is now on HD.

I canceled my expanded TV with my cable company, saved $38. Then canceled my land line phone, saved another $38. I kept basic TV service just for news in case of bad weather or a disaster of some kind. My neighbor told me that she had a $10. digital antenna that gets more channels than I get with my $25. basic service. So I am going to cancel the basic, saving $25. That's a lot of money saved. I can pay for my poodle in 6 months. Yeah............LOL

We can't get cable, satellite or antenna reception.

We watch TV online, see all we need that way...and it's free.

I haven't had cable or satellite in years. I went from the basic extended to the basic to ween myself off it but there was so little on the basic it wasn't worth the $15/mo so I dropped it quickly. Around here the digital channels are expanding and I watch them a lot and for other stuff I watch it online. I justified getting broadband initially since I could justify it for work and I also rationalized it that I use the internet for entertainment a lot Now I can watch all kinds of movies and TV shows online so while the broadband internet is certainly not "free", there's no additional cost to watch TV on the internet as long as I don't go to a pay site. Broadband for me has been very worthwhile and enjoyable for me.

You can still have an antenna TV depending on your area. Do any of your neighbors or nearby friends use antenna TV? If so, ask them what channels you get and check the TV logs for what shows are on. You can also go to something like Zap2it or Titan and get the channel lineups for your area. You just enter your zip code and choose broadcast TV.

One caveat, despite the rumor to the contrary, I get snowy pictures on digital TV. Theoretically it was supposed to be crystal clear or nothing but that's not how it is here. But I don't mind it. A lot of times I listen to the TV rather than watch it intently.

I've never had cable either. In fact, my "good" TV isn't hooked up to receive any channels; I use a Roku box to stream TV shows via Netflix. Cost is $7.99 a month. And there's no commercials. :-)

If you want to watch the current lineup of shows, try Moni's suggestion. My kitchen TV is hooked up to an outdoor antenna, and I get excellent reception on 16 channels for free.

Have At&t U Verse and LOVE it. Especially the music channels that I listen to on weekends.
