I HATE putting the dishes away!

Of all the household chores, I really hate emptying the dishwasher. Isn't that about the dumbest thing you've heard? It takes all of five minutes out of my life.

What do you hate to do?

Bathrooms. Once I get down on my knees to scrub bathtub or toilet, I can't get back up. LOL

    Dust, washing windows.

As for the dishwasher, make sure all the plates of certain sizes are lined up together so you can pick them up all at once. Any organization of the silverware helps too, all the knives in one section. Make sure the dishes are stored close to the dishwasher.

Angelaid, could you scrub the tub with a broom with a rag on the end? Or even spray the tub with whatever, scour out with a broom.

Why not clean dishes before putting in DW?

    Q

    Comments (47)
Chemically, there is NO WAY any household-approved enzyme can etch glass, porcelain or metal (if any enzymes can, you wouldn't want them in DW detergent or near non-chemists). Enzymes are protein molecules that break down other proteins, or fats, or carbohydrates to make them easier to remove from your dishes. Some sites claim "Today's detergent is designed to react with the proteins in leftover food. These proteins activate the enzymes that clean and remove soil. If there is little to no food on the dishes prior to being put in the dishwasher, the detergent cannot activate. It will largely remain in its crystal format, attacking your dishes, usually in the form of etching and fogging your glassware. This is chemically ridiculous ... purified dried enzymes, like other proteins, soften and dissolve readily in water, which automatically "activates" them. Think of how dried raw egg white behaves and that's how enzymes react to water. I can't think of a chemically plausible mechanism that would require dried food crud for a detergent to work properly. If you are seeing etched and fogged glassware, it's a water chemistry problem (hard water), maybe a water temperature problem, but don't blame undissolved, inactive enzymes. The soil acts as a pH buffer to the detergent. Also chemically implausible ... the type and quantity of food crud varies wildly between loads, so its buffering properties would also vary wildly. =========== I scrape the dishes, pre-wash any really crusty cooking pans and let the DW do its thing.

Speaking of drying pots and pans ... When I was a kid mom didn't put pots in the dishwasher, she washed them by hand and set them over on the cooktop to dry, then later on poured out the remaining drips. It was a small kitchen short on counterspace. Out of habit, I often do the same -- quick swipe on the bottom, then over to the stovetop, later dump the drips, wipe and put away. One day I was talking to her about it, and she laughed. HER mother had a working woodstove in the kitchen, so placing the pots there actually DRIED them. But old habits die hard. :P

Chi I didn't add that he does do this for me and often unasked. He isn't the bad guy here, just knows how much else there is to do. Like changing the kitchen and bathroom floors and putting in a downstairs bathroom shower. Also screening the porch and fixing the drywall in the kitchen etc.....it's a long list and he does it all. He does any chore that is needed whenever he's home. :) Thank you for the support though. :)

*I* don't have to unload the dishwasher. DH does that every evening. He's my Prince! He also cleans the toilets -- which I think is only fair...considering (you know).

I hate to dust. I have few things out 'on display' for that very reason.

What I don't mind doing is vacuuming with the central vac because it is so efficient and because we have mostly wood flooring (with some area rugs).

Cleaning the refrigerator out. Mine is past due.

I really 'hate' almost all housework~~the dishwasher is not one I dislike, I also love to do laundry.

lol..don't mind the dw, cause I have this thing about dh having enough cereal bowls in the am...plus it's one of my mid-night chores...(along with laundry) but yes, bathrooms are a pita! and dusting...

I too hate emptying the dishwasher. Took me years to figure out why. The reason? ... I'm short. Putting things back in the cupboard is a hassle because of my height. I have to drag out a step stool, reach to uncomfortable depths and hope I don't break anything.

Love housekeeping in general but my allergies tend to complain when I do too much of it.

I don't mind about putting the dishes away and I enjoy laundry. I hate scrubbing bathrooms and vacuuming. I think it's because both of my vacuum cleaners are heavy and cumbersome and they are so LOUD.

I dislike all housework. It is strange because I used to be a thorough and meticulous housekeeper and enjoyed it. I think what changed it is being basically bedridden for a few months and everything got out of control, and it is not now under control. I am struggling with it though and trying to get back into those good habits.

Angelaid, spray the bathtub with a disinfectant spray and let it sit for a couple of minutes. I then wipe the tub down with a mop similar to the one in the link below. I bought mine at Target and it is made by O'Cedar, but couldn't find it on O'Cedars website. Works great. You can even use the same method in a separate shower stall. Works like a charm for both - you don't have to bend over or get on your knees.

Here is a link that might be useful: Swivel Mop

Husband does that, but it wouldn't be my worse chore. I HATE vacuuming, mainly because I have old wood floors all thru the house with antique rugs and it's a real problem vacuuming them. I don't mind cleaning bathrooms. I do it every day. I don't like to dust either mainly because there are too many items sitting on tables, so I basically dust around them.

Emptying the dishwasher is #1 on my housework hate list. I don't understand why as it only takes a couple of minutes. Often times I will just take out what I need instead of emptying the entire thing. Crazy!!

Some of you might not mind the DW so much with a Dishdrawer unit. If your household is small, like ours, you can just load the top drawer with a whole day's dishes and run it after dinner.

Putting the sheets back on the bed. Ours is like a nest, I love the comfort....a chiropractor type stupidly thick mattress (takes a calif king fitted and its queen sized mattress) with a feather bed on top. I'm making about 14 trips around the bed by the time protectors, fitted sheets, flat sheets blanket and blanket cover or duvet if I'm using that are in place. 6 pillows. Lately DH has been helping with the fitted, he can lift the mattress and I only accomplish skinned knuckles with the side rails of our four poster.

My other hard- to- make- myself- do household chore if it qualifies....filing. I can't seem to make myself keep up with it, and we have a small business so I do have paperwork as well as the personal papers and receipts. Every time I get it all caught up at once, I tell myself I'll never let it go again - but I must be untrainable or something because I just don't do it daily, or weekly, and how simple would that be.

I don't like putting sheets back on, either. I've gotten into the habit of putting them on as soon as I take the others off. Messing with my own mind, I guess.

I've never minded dusting, for some reason. I put on some music...loud....and go at it.

Walnutgrove, I've been in the same position as you. It simply became too overwhelming....I didn't know where nor how to begin. It took a long time, but I finally got to the point where I am able to appreciate the instant gratification of the small tasks. You'll get there.

I would LOVE to be able to empty the dishwasher, LOL. We have a one-butt kitchen with absolutely no room for one. We did have one many years ago, but the cupboard space it stole became more important. And a portable isn't really an option, because there is just no place for it to move out of the way.

I hate, hate, hate cleaning the bathroom. But I do it because I believe I do it best.

I don't mind the dishwasher at all. I would rather have it than wash all the dishes and canning jars. My least liked chore is either mopping or putting sheets on the bed. Bad back and knee are the reason. Using the sweeper is just as bad too.

Iron. I don't iron. My husbands dress shirts go to the dry cleaners and my sons and I go through life wrinkled.

When we had a dishwasher, I hated emptying it because I didn't like the feel of the squeaky plates and glasses. I don't really mind hand washing dishes and pots and pans and Woody usually always helps, he's good like that.

I don't like to vacuum because it's so loud and it hurts my ears. I like to dust, those Swiffer dust things are great, I can talk on the phone and dust at the same time.

I hate dusting because it's neverending. I can dust in the morning and there's dust back on surfaces by afternoon. I guess that's one of the downsides of having open windows.

Jodi, I'm short, too, which is why all of my dishes are in lower cabinets on pull-out shelves. I keep glassware and seldom used items in the upper cabinets, but the glasses we use most are on the lowest shelf. Putting away dishes is now a very easy task.

Slightly OT to FlamingO..headphones/earbuds and my MP3 player in my pocket drown out the vacuumn, the sound of scuttling dog as he avoids the vacuum, and the sound of the slamming of the door as my husband avoids "the noise" aka work!

Most hated chores? Washing the outside garbage can during the summer/vacuuming the dog hair covered car!

Once I get going the dishwasher takes no time - it's the getting going that slows things down. After 46 years, I find I hate housework - I was never "Mrs. Clean" but these days I really have to push myself. Bathrooms are awful because I can't get up either once I'm down. I want a self-cleaning house. I'm trying to get rid of stuff, but it seems to keep accumulating.

Fun2BHere, I've put all I can on the lower shelves and pull out drawer in my kitchen, but even the lower shelves are too high for me to handle more than a couple full size plates, which are of course stacked because of lack of space, with bowls and smaller plates. Luckily, I married a tall man. :-)

Well, how about "all of the above"? walnutcreek, I can so can relate to your post. It isn't that I "hate" to run the sweeper, my back hates it. When DH was alive, this is something he always did for me...now...well, it just does not get done very often....but the wood floors are easy. I have gotten really lazy in my old age.
One thing that I don't think has been mentioned....carrying in the groceries and putting them away. Again, DH helped with this also. He knew they were hard for me to carry and always told me to drive in and honk....and he'd come runnin'...and he did.
One advantage to being alone...I don't make many messes, so not as much to clean....but it sure has its disadvantages also :-(

Dusting tops the list of things I don't like to do.

Have never had a dishwasher, except for the kids when they were young and took turns. When they all moved out,it became my job again.

For the tub I clean it and the surrounding walls before I get out. This is easier for me since I can no longer get on my knees. The rest of the bathroom I clean before I come out, from my shower unless I have to go somewhere, then I do it later in the day.

DH does all the cooking now,but that is also something I hated doing once the kids all left home.He also does the majority of grocery shopping, and he washes the laundry and I fold it and put it away.He took on all these chores when I had 2 major surgeries, and chemo 5 years ago and just kept it up.

One thing I realized though is that he must hate to vacuum, because when I had those surgeries,he never once picked up the vacuum, and still doesn't.Good thing we are the only 2 here and we don't have any pets, unless you count his aquarium of fish and he takes care of those.

I can't decide which I hate worse- dirty dishes or clean dishes that call at me to be put away!

    Dishwasher ... what's that?

Mine's two hands on the end of a pair of arms, and dishes don't adhere to them.

They do seem to accumulate in the rack ... and often detour via the table en route to the cupboard.

But ... then ... the cupboard as destination ...

    ... gets ruled out.

Really what is it??? I dislike emptying dishwasher as well, and seriously takes NO time at all?second on my list is cleaning out frig.. even tho I do this EVERY Sunday, as that is grocery shopping day. I think it is because I really hate waste... just hate it when I have to throw away food that has gone bad.

I dislike cooking, so hubby does that. I hate washing windows and changing bed linens. I'm tiny and just can't reach.

I don't mind all of the other chores like running the vac, dusting, emptying wastebaskets, cleaning the bathroom, handwashing the dishes and putting them away, handling the finances, doing laundry, although I don't enjoy putting away the clean clothes.

Phoggie beat me to it -- all of the above. I'm trying to think of any household chore that I don't mind. Maybe scrubbing out the toilet since all I do is pour in toilet cleaner and scrub with a long brush.

I hate vacuuming because I have to drag out the vacuum and then dodge all the furniture while dragging the cord around. Dusting is useless because it lasts about five minutes. I wouldn't mind laundry of the washer and dryer were not in the basement; I hate putting the clean clothes away.

I hate washing he dishes, putting dishes in the dishwasher and then emptying the darn thing. I hate grocery shopping and putting the groceries away.

On the other hand, I could work in the garden all day!

This thread has been so interesting to me! Aren't we all so funny with our peculiarities?

I really don't hate any of it.You know why? Because I have become physically un able to do most things due to illness and would love to be able to again. Also,I am thankful. Many of us grew up with outhouses,no running water, and old wringer washers etc.No dis repect meant, but I get sad when people complain when they should be thankful.

Oh, Caroline.....you may not mean to be disrepectful, but you are being judgemental. If you'll be honest with yourself, you will realize that.

Many of us have had or do now have terrible hardships. Complaining about the mundane but necessary daily tasks of our daily lives is a relief, a distraction. This thread has been a great, unifying topic.....something that we all share.

It doesn't mean that we aren't grateful about our many blessings. I'm sorry that you don't see that....or that you simply felt the need to criticize.

That hardest thing I have to do every day is to get up. Literally. But I complain about putting the dishes away. I like that about myself!

I'm thankful every day...for my wonderful husband, my home, my friends and family, and a million other things. But I still hate to put the dishes away, lol.

Dusting and emptying the dishwasher are my least favorites too!

anything with clothes. Sorting, treating, washing, drying (cleaning out the lint catcher), folding, ironing, or hanging. Mind you, I don't mind looking good ;) I love cooking and organizing. I like to organize everything. It can be shelves, the freezer or my jewelry...or anything. I should be a professional organizer! Lists are my best friend.

Rhizo You are right,I sounded judegmental.Certainly not meant to. I wasnt aimimg at anyone here on the board,...I am just saying that some people out there in the world are un greatful when they have their health, plenty of money and really arent enduring any hardships. We all know a few.
The folks on here seem like "common"people and I enjoy them very much!! Come to think of it,I don't like housework myself, because Im un able to do it myself and have to have help.Sorry if I offended anyone. Not intentional.

I 'dislike' many routine chores that fall into the 'keeping house' category, but my biggest dislike involves the sorting of all the crap that comes into the house daily. What to toss, what to keep, where to keep it and for how long, etc, etc. It seems there is a never ending stack of stuff that needs something done with it. Daily I must make decisions about how to get rid of, or at least how to get out of my sight, all this 'stuff' that is cluttering up my space.

We just came back from a 4 day mini vacation, and all the pamphlets, maps, etc that we drug home with us need my attention, and I am sitting here wishing we had not picked it up, cause now I have to find a place for it.

I wouldn't mind that at all, if I had a dishwasher.

I love doing laundry and hanging them outside.

I don't like stripping and making the bed, I try to get hubby to help me. There's always one of the cats that like to help, and she gets under she sheets and races around, which is hilarious.

I've found that I hate most indoor cleaning. I didn't use to mind it so much, but with three kids, a cat and a dog, and a husband, I just can't manage to stay ahead. I have turned to organizing which I like. I have 'zoned' my house and work in zones to get things done. That seems to work better for me. I also go on decluttering tangents. Those seem to make it easier because I can see results I've also been delegating more work to the kids. If they can mess it up, they can clean it up. It is better to learn how to do it now rather than later.

    Hi there adbell+ella (twice),

Let's take a bit of inventory about your place.

Five ... no, make that six, entities beside yourself.

Cats and dogs can be more or less trained not to add too much to the messiness ... but not of much help when it comes to housekeeping.

That's about a third of the total - leaving two thirds unaccounted for.

Which includes a hub, for one other.

Last year when I was invited back to a village where I'd been minister to help celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the building of their beautiful old rural church, when they asked me to speak, I suggested that it's seldom that both persons of a couple die together. That it's a good idea for a couple to arrange things so that, though one does most of the work related to various aspects of the family and home maintenance, that it's a good idea for the other to know what's going on with the part that the other does, so that when one departs the scene, s/he can carry it on without too much strain in the absence of the other.

On the death or serious disability of one, there'll be a huge mental and emotional stress on the other partner, and if that person doesn't know how to carry on the small chores of life without strain (writing a cheque, making supper), it'll be greatly magnified when one is under the huge other stress.

While old guys usually are the first to make their departure, I suggested that when it comes to cooking, there's someone available who knows what they like to eat and how to make it, etc. If the old guy learns how while he has a coach, even though she laughs at his mistakes from time to time, that he should persist ... not wait until that smart coach's voice is stilled ... and he hardly knows how to boil water/potatoes/(rice?).

As for the two youngies ... they need to learn how the daily routines, including housekeeping, works, so that when they get on their own they can look after their daily tasks routinely, without strain.

As we grow up ... it's important to take on not only the increased freedoms of adulthood ... but also the responsibilities ...

... if we're to be successful.

These ideas offered while knowing next to nothing about how your household works, so the ideas may have no bearing on your reality.

    ole joyful
