G-r-r-r-r ! To books in pale ink. Why?

I've no idea why publishers are doing this, but I agree, it is so irritating to older eyes. I've noticed that some older books use much darker, more legible type fonts than modern works. I find it equally irritating to find a book that has almost no margins towards the spine. This means bending the book in order to be able to decipher the final words leading towards the margins. Cheap, cheap, cheap!

Is R19 or R11 insulation necessary for new home?
Q
Comments (69)
Owens Corning R-11 fiberglass batt Sound Barrier insulation is 3 1/2" thick but its up to the OP to tell us what the builder is offering. The company likes rockwool when greater density is desired but it makes it clear that greater density does not increase the STC rating of a partition wall. Assuming the company is not contradicting itself, I have to assume there are other uses for acoustic insulation where density matters. All I've ever said about these materials is that the STC rating difference in a partition cannot be measured. Worrying about the difference is making a mountain out of a mole hill. Talking about removing drywall to add rockwool later makes me think he may have lost his mind.

R-15 vs R-13 for walls
Q
Comments (12)
It seems like you can buy the R-13 faced insulation as a roll, but the R-15 only is available in batts. The batts are more expensive but they are pre-cut for a standard 8 foot high wall. It is hard to answer your question without knowing how the addition will be heated and cooled and your location. The bigger losses are usually through the roof and the windows.

R19 Insulation vs R21 Insulation
Q
Comments (22)
"The roof or attic is the most obvious place to up the R Value by adding insulation." Why do people think this all the time? Yea I get it, because the ceiling temperature is higher so there is a higher temperature differential and more heat loss, but not with radiant floor heating. Anyway it doesn't matter, ceiling, walls or floor it's all about temp differential. Do you know why they put R19 in a 2 x 6 walls? Because that's all they can get in it! The only reason. Because the ceiling is warmer the differential will be higher. With R40 and a 60 degree temperature differential you would lose 1.5 btu's per square foot per hour, but if you increased insulation 50% to R60 you will lose 1 btu /sq.ft.. A wall with R20 and a 50 degree differential as an average would lose 2.5 btu's/sq. ft. / hour but if increased it 50% to R30 in the walls the loss would be 1.67 btu's. You would save a little more energy adding an additional R10 to the walls as you did adding R20 to the ceiling for 1/2 the cost of the insulation. Now if we could only get windows that were R30, life would be better. The loss would jump from 16 btu's/sq. ft. to only 1.67 btu/sq.ft. and you could heat a home with a hair dryer. (almost).

Bigack, I used to break into Gilda' character every time I looked in the mirror. I'd point a thumb toward my chest and start talking like Roseanna in that great accent of hers.
