Hospital rant

Before I start ranting, I want to make it clear that I am talking about some hospitals, not all of them.

A friend of mine was hospitalized over a week ago with various problems. He's a diabetic.

His experience has reminded me that hospitals can ruin the two most basic things people need for healing: rest and nutrition. They keep patients awake, disturbing them constantly, and feed them garbage--or, as in my friend's case, nothing at all. He's had nothing but clear liquids, Jello, and Italian Ice for over a week. They had him on this diet at first because he had an endoscopy, but I have no idea why they kept him on it. I suspect someone forgot to change the order. (He's the ideal patient--he would never ask.)

I can't imagine a worse diet for a diabetic. He was on pills at home, not insulin, but in the hospital they've been shooting him with insulin every day because his blood sugar has been going crazy--no surprise on that wretched diet. When I called him yesterday I overheard a nurse telling him that ginger ale ("and all soda") contains caffeine. Not true. It reminded me of my doctor's nurse telling me MRI's give off radiation.

I dread the thought of ever having to be hospitalized around here. So far my only experience has been with emergency rooms, and that was way bad enough.

When my dad had heart bypass surgery at the age of 86, he was fortunate to be in Florida Hospital in Orlando. This was 20 years ago, so I don't know if it's even still there. But I'll never forget it--what a great place! It was run by Seventh Day Adventists, so it was vegetarian. The food was fabulous--fresh and healthy. My mom and I had breakfast there every morning. The place seemed much cleaner than most hospitals I've seen lately. The staff was so good about explaining everything about the surgery and recovery to us.

I don't know why more hospitals can't be like that one.
