We celebrated the elopers' wedding! (pics)

As I announced here this summer, my son and daughter-in-law eloped in August. This weekend her family gave them a party to celebrate. It was very much like a wedding reception, and we had a great time. Here are some pictures.

One of the bride's close friends is the pastry chef at our area's most upscale restaurant. Here's the bride and groom with the cake that her friend made.

I took a closeup of the cake for all you KT bakers. It was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, decorated with real flowers.

My daughter Suzanne gave the toast. When I take pictures, I hear nothing! After this shot I put the camera down so I could listen to the toast. She did a great job!

"The Bride Cuts the Cake" The party was held in our township building. I'm going to have to learn how to remove backgrounds in Photoshop, as the building was full of unwelcome details . . . like this bulletin board. :-)

Here's the band. It was so nice to hear traditional music and soft pop for a change.

The First Dance.

The Second Dance. After dancing with Leanne, Joe brought her little sister onto the dance floor.

My flash didn't fire, but I love this picture of the bride and her best friend.

And I love this one, too: my granddaughter and daughter. Watching children at the party follow my son around, my granddaughter remarked that she still remembered how much fun it was to ride on his shoulders.

Very nice.They look so happy........I think your son looks a lot like you....darker coloring but still I see the resemblance.

Oh, I am the first one to see them! The whole wedding just shouts happiness and good feelings, it is very special and you will remember it forever! You created the setting and it just flowed, I think. Everyone looks so delighted. Keith' Grandpa is having a great time, looks like. Many thanks for all your nice compliments. Hhireno: I know what you mean. DD has inherited my love of decorating and cooking. It will be interesting how she does in a small, shared dorm room at college. She's already telling us that she needs to skip the dorms and go right to an apartment instead. That's not going to happen(LOL!). KSWL: Tarpon Springs? Do you live there? My parent's winter home is right outside there! In fact, I'll be heading down there again sometime in the next couple months. I love Tarpon Springs! As for my silver colored nativity set, I love the detail, which is embossed n both sides f every figure. Not expensive, though. I bought them at Hobby Lobby for $10 on sale a few years ago. I think you are okay to elope if you and your fiance both want that. But I also think you will not be sorry if you choose to have a small, intimate wedding -- I mean really small, like your immediate families and possibly a couple of close friends. I wouldn't bring up your unhappiness in your first marriage or your disappointment in your first wedding. That just invites people to want to "get it right for you" this time all the more. Nor would I talk about your feelings of wanting to be alone with your guy. That sounds romantic from your point of view, but from theirs, it sounds like you think of them as annoyances or just a bunch of eyes or mooches. It's also insulting to those who have had or attended big weddings. Remember too that although of course it is more important to you two than anyone else, and your feelings are more important than anyone else's on this, it's also important to others. Your fiance is someone's son, someone's brother, someone's grandchild. His wedding day is a big day for them, too. So of course they care and want to be there (and, really, aren't you glad they do?). Is this your fiance's first marriage? Is he close with his family? What does HE want? You haven't said one word about that. You said, "If *I* did not consider, for a single second, the wishes of *others*, I would run away with him and be married in some beautiful, far away place. Nothing would make *me* happier. But it is inevitable that *others* would be offended by that decision." Is he one of those "others"? What would make HIM happy - your best friend, who is the best thing that ever happened to you? That doesn't mean you shouldn't elope, just that you need to think about these things more and your first wedding and marriage less. Your fiance's feelings are relevant; your allergy to your first wedding ring isn't. I think the first thing you need to do is to talk to your future husband. Tell him your feelings. LISTEN to his. Then, when the two of you know what you want, talk to his family. Don't go into the whole drama, just tell them that you are uncomfortable with a second big wedding, and work together to find something that is good for all of you. If they are disappointed because they want a big wedding, don't argue with them or try to persuade them -- acknowledge that disappointment, sympathize, and ask for their help and support in doing it the way that works best for you both. And make sure you tell them how glad you are to be joining their family. If they want to give a big party to celebrate, then cooperate graciously. Don't let your feelings like those in your ninth paragraph show. Consider that your guy's family -- your new family -- may not just be there to eat and drink and stare at you as if that's what makes you married. Maybe they love and support you. Whatever you decide, just be nice about how you handle it, and everything will be fine, even if some people are disappointed. Remember, it's the marriage that's important, not the wedding. Good luck!

Wow, Taigen--that looks great! Yes, please send me your version. GardenWeb email usually works; I'll let you know when I receive it. I definitely need to get out of my Photoshop rut--that is, doing only what I know how to do. I've been in this rut for years. :-)

Ruthie, I agree--to me, my son looks just like my parents, especially my dad (whom I also resemble). I think if I'd had a brother he would have looked like Joe. Every so often someone will say to me, "Your son looks just like your husband." And I reply, "No, he doesn't." LOL

You have really beautiful children. Bet the party was a lot of fun. Very wise to elope--saves them tons of money to use starting their new life together. Your GD should be a model!!

Thanks, everyone!! Yes, I am counting on more grandchildren from this wonderful couple. As I said above, kids follow my DS around. He's playful with them, like my dad was.

The bride and groom started dating 11 years ago! She was 16 and he was 20. She has a big family, and over the years they've grown very fond of my DS. I'm happy that he has expanded his family in this way.

Oh thanks for posting the photos - there's one missing though - where is yours? The pictures are great- they look so relaxed and happy. If you do end up with more grandchildren they're probably all going to be blonds like the rest of the family. I noticed Leanne's beautiful nails - are they hers or the magical ones from the store? Joey is quite a handsome fellow - whether he's smiling or not. Everyone looks great.

Loved the pictures. I still haven't figured out how to post. I did everything you told me to but it didn't work for me. I guess I'll just have to find someone to show me. Trouble is, I don't have grandkids....I'll have to borrow someone else's.

That's the best kind of wedding to have! Elope and then have the celebration.
