We celebrated the elopers' wedding! (pics)

As I announced here this summer, my son and daughter-in-law eloped in August. This weekend her family gave them a party to celebrate. It was very much like a wedding reception, and we had a great time. Here are some pictures.

One of the bride's close friends is the pastry chef at our area's most upscale restaurant. Here's the bride and groom with the cake that her friend made.

I took a closeup of the cake for all you KT bakers. It was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, decorated with real flowers.

My daughter Suzanne gave the toast. When I take pictures, I hear nothing! After this shot I put the camera down so I could listen to the toast. She did a great job!

"The Bride Cuts the Cake" The party was held in our township building. I'm going to have to learn how to remove backgrounds in Photoshop, as the building was full of unwelcome details . . . like this bulletin board. :-)

Here's the band. It was so nice to hear traditional music and soft pop for a change.

The First Dance.

The Second Dance. After dancing with Leanne, Joe brought her little sister onto the dance floor.

My flash didn't fire, but I love this picture of the bride and her best friend.

And I love this one, too: my granddaughter and daughter. Watching children at the party follow my son around, my granddaughter remarked that she still remembered how much fun it was to ride on his shoulders.

Very nice.They look so happy........I think your son looks a lot like you....darker coloring but still I see the resemblance.

Since the OP asked specifically about doing something that wouldn't require everyone to physically be in the same space, I would suggest something that allows people to express their joy of the upcoming marriage and support for the bride. Really, that is what a shower is all about, non? What if the MOB sent electronic recipe cards that could be filled out by each guest and printed by MOB and then put into a nice recipe box or electronic book. Older relatives could be sent paper cards via snail mail with a self addressed stamped envelope (and a date by which it must be returned!). Or similarly, fill out a card with each electronic "guests" best marriage advice - you're sure to get some hilarious answers as well as some real words of wisdom. These could be printed into one of those online make your own books. Pictures of each respondent/guest could be added to the page with their advice. I would love to have a book I could look back on later to remember friends and relatives. I think she should definitely do some sort of shower. People want to contribute to the success of a marriage and demonstrate their support and joy. ETA: if you do want to collect for a gift, you can set up an online account and have people contribute towards a group gift (what do they they need? Something small like a really good wafflemaker or something bigger like a new fridge). It could be worded to be optional and people could contribute whatever they felt was appropriate. With something like this, you could attach the names of the hosts or co-hosts (could be MOH or MOB) to avoid the breaching of ettiquette (altho where I live MOBs often host showers and did way back when, as well).

Congrats! What a great and inspiring post to read, thank you for sharing!! I met a man at the pet store the other day, he was a real talker and shared that it was his anniversay. He was talking about how his wife fell in love with a dog he’d found (and rescued) after it was tossed from a car! He proudly boasted, “yup, my bride and I have been married 61 years today”. Maybe they can just have a simple ceremony with just family, then have a large party for their 1st anniversary. DD got married privately on New Years Eve. My son married them and his future wife witnessed. A year later they threw a huge anniversary party for friends and family. It turned out sooo much better than a wedding/reception/off to honeymoon thing. They were able to focus on the celebration, without wedding stress. Although they did not plan the evening as a wedding party all their friends treated it as such, bearing gifts, love and good wishes. They had a whole pirate theme going and all the guests from 20 somethings to 90 joined in the fun. It is still talked about to this day. Other people have albums, they have shared memories that are still frequently brought up 10 years later.

Wow, Taigen--that looks great! Yes, please send me your version. GardenWeb email usually works; I'll let you know when I receive it. I definitely need to get out of my Photoshop rut--that is, doing only what I know how to do. I've been in this rut for years. :-)

Ruthie, I agree--to me, my son looks just like my parents, especially my dad (whom I also resemble). I think if I'd had a brother he would have looked like Joe. Every so often someone will say to me, "Your son looks just like your husband." And I reply, "No, he doesn't." LOL

You have really beautiful children. Bet the party was a lot of fun. Very wise to elope--saves them tons of money to use starting their new life together. Your GD should be a model!!

Thanks, everyone!! Yes, I am counting on more grandchildren from this wonderful couple. As I said above, kids follow my DS around. He's playful with them, like my dad was.

The bride and groom started dating 11 years ago! She was 16 and he was 20. She has a big family, and over the years they've grown very fond of my DS. I'm happy that he has expanded his family in this way.

Oh thanks for posting the photos - there's one missing though - where is yours? The pictures are great- they look so relaxed and happy. If you do end up with more grandchildren they're probably all going to be blonds like the rest of the family. I noticed Leanne's beautiful nails - are they hers or the magical ones from the store? Joey is quite a handsome fellow - whether he's smiling or not. Everyone looks great.

Loved the pictures. I still haven't figured out how to post. I did everything you told me to but it didn't work for me. I guess I'll just have to find someone to show me. Trouble is, I don't have grandkids....I'll have to borrow someone else's.
