We went to Amish country near Lancaster Pa.!

My favorite pic.

DH waiting for me, outside a quilt shop. Didn't buy anything.

It was nice, we stayed in Bird in Hand, Pa. Less commercialized there, but still busy. Had a 2 hour bus tour through the country, made a couple stops. Enjoyed seeing the little Amish kids walking to school, rain or shine. Didn't get a picture , though. There was a farm across the road, cows, pigs, etc. A couple of petting zoos during some of the tour stops, neat. DH got a cold on the way home, now I've got it, good to be home!!

Replacing the handles will require you to plug one or both holes, so if you decide to stay with stain you need to make sure that what you plug the holes with is stainable. Even after allowing for that, you're probably going to see where the repair was. Painting those cabinets won't be difficult since the doors are flat but it will be time consuming. Me, I'd do all the repairs and sand them smooth, then give all the cabinets a good cleaning, prime and paint. Go to a Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Miller, etc. paint store and ask for guidance on a cleaner, primer and paint for cabinets. Find a handyman that can help you remove the cabinet over the sink (before painting) then add a window treatment and a pendant. Below is a link to a thread about painting cabinets. One of the things I love about this kitchen forum is that I can see so many different styles. Sometime it reminds me of watching salsa dancing where you could watch 5 couples dancing and everyone is doing something a little different to make it their own. When I was working on my kitchen, I could look at pictures and see what things people did that called to me. One of the things I decided on based on the finished kitchen was going with taller crown molding. I didn't even know I liked it or wanted it (chuckle - this forum is great for finding things you didn't even know you wanted ) until I tried to figure out what it was about certain kitchens that appealed to me. Looking at the kitchen magazines aren't much help because they are showing the kitchen that is double my budget, double the space I have, and with whatever is the in trend that season. I like that we keep the finished kitchen thread nice. It is a celebration. You want to encourage people to post because it is helpful to the newcomers in figuring out your taste and style and really contributes to the sense of community. If I post that I really like X about someone's kitchen - then I really like X about their kitchen or I won't say anything. It's interesting because some of my favorite kitchens have been ones that I could never pull off but they had that something about them that was visionary.

My heart goes out to you in your moments of despair which is totally understandable when you look around and see so many with their children on the right path. Know that you're not alone, go to Al-Anon please. Addicts are just people who can't stop doing what they do. We can relate to them if we think of giving up foods we love or cigarettes or coffee etc. It's not easy and it's not because we're weak, it's because the yearning is ruling our brain. I will pray that your Kasey can find the strength to realize that she's on the road to losing more than just her children. In the meantime you need to surrender to God. Know that He is on your side. Do what you can to make yourself accept and realize you had no part in her addiction, it was just a very bad choice that has it's grip on her. Way down inside her, she yearns to stop but the drugs rule. Say your prayers and then just let it be. You're a good woman and she knows it. She loves you but the drugs are making her love them over others. In time I feel she'll recover. God bless you and your husband.

Wonderful pictures! I love to visit there--have been to Lancaster, Bird in Hand, Intercourse, etc., many times. There's some great shopping in that area also. Glad you had a fun trip!

Certainly nice and restful little holiday Bigack! Glad you and hubby had a nice time.

That's in my country.....not PA, but I live in Mennonite country. They use the big Belgian horses to plant and harvest the fields. Every Monday is washday and all the clothes are on the lines.
No hydro...you don't see hydro poles lining the driveways.

The churches are filled with horses and buggies Sundays, the kids all walk to school with their little lunch pails....the girls in dresses and bonnets the boys in shirts and black pants and hats. One thing they don't like is having their pictures taken....kids or adults. That's against their religion. I'm not slamming you, the little boy was on his scooter going the other way, but they will never pose for pics.

I'm glad you got to go away, even if it wasn't to your first choice of destinations. You did a great job of sharing your experiences with your pictures. I always enjoy my day trips into Amish country. Sorry you both got sick though.

I've been wondering where you decided to go. It looks like a wonderful trip. Harry and I have visited that area and it's fascinating. We were told it was okay to take pics of the kids but not adults. Well, it was too late and I feel bad that I took a picture of an Amish man plowing his fields with the horses.

We drove through Bird in Hand and Intercourse and ate dinner someplace in the area that was like a big tourist trap. You were seated at big tables with other people and served bowls of whatever was on the menu that night. I found the food not that great. Rather bland without much flavor.

Sorry you got colds when you got home--same thing happened to us after we got home from our trip! Feel better soon.

One thing we found out about the "no pictures" is that anytime you see postcards, calendars, etc with Amish on them, that they are staged by actors and not Amish, with the exception of very far off shots. Interesting. I bought an Amish calendar, and after knowing that, it kinda took away some of the uniqueness.

Nope, didn't buy a qullt, too much $$$. Most of the motels have chairs in front to watch the buggies.

I think you could count on a beautiful place, if you go to Amish country. We used to live near an Amish community in Ohio. I got fascinated by the lifestyle, and thought how it must be to live that way. Sure seems less stressful to me.!

This is in my backyard. It's getting too touristy though. Notice the green fields. We have had the wettest year ever in history as well as the wettest month (September). You probably had some rain. In fact it's raining now. I know what restaurant you're talking about. I am 100% German with both sides settling in Lancaster County in 1709, but I don't like German food very much. Of course I grew up eating it but never make it myself. I do miss my mother's chicken and waffles and chicken potpie. My son likes shoefly pie which most people out of the area never heard of.

So glad you had a good time....I've had grand kids at Shippensburg University so we've been out that way lots of times.....It is a special place, very peaceful.....

AND Shoefly pie, yummy!I make my own and have a great recipe for shoefly cake......
