Well, I didn't go to Yale today........

.....but I'm going tomorrow! I'd been looking forward to experiencing the full four-day reunion, but decided to give myself one more day to get better and get prepared. Because this chest cold, or whatever it has, has had me so wiped out, I never finished shopping for the trip and haven't gone over the directions, read the map of New Haven, etc. I'm catching up on the latter today.

My cough gets a little better every day, so hopefully I won't clear the place out when I arrive tomorrow. When I attended the reunion five years ago, I cut the first day off for another reason: anxiety! At least I don't have that to contend with this time. :-)

Stunning table!! I thought of you when I came across this Cooks Illustrated recipe in my email today. Roast Beef Tenderloin Serves 4 to 6. Published March 1, 2009. From Cook's Illustrated. If using table salt, reduce the amount to 1 teaspoon. Ask your butcher to prepare a trimmed, center-cut ChÃ¢teaubriand from the whole tenderloin, as this cut is not usually available without special ordering. If you are cooking for a crowd, this recipe can be doubled to make two roasts. Sear the roasts one after the other, wiping out the pan and adding new oil after searing the first roast. Both pieces of meat can be roasted on the same rack. Ingredients 1 beef tenderloin center-cut ChÃ¢teaubriand (about 2 pounds), trimmed of fat and silver skin (see note) 2 teaspoons kosher salt (see note) 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 2 tablespoons unsalted butter , softened 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 recipe flavored butter (see related recipes) Instructions 1. Using 12-inch lengths of twine, tie roast crosswise at 11/2-inch intervals. Sprinkle roast evenly with salt, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let stand at room temperature 1 hour. Meanwhile, adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 300 degrees. 2. Pat roast dry with paper towels. Sprinkle roast evenly with pepper and spread unsalted butter evenly over surface. Transfer roast to wire rack set in rimmed baking sheet. Roast until instant-read thermometer inserted into center of roast registers 125 degrees for medium-rare, 40 to 55 minutes, or 135 degrees for medium, 55 to 70 minutes, flipping roast halfway through cooking. 3. Heat oil in 12-inch heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat until just smoking. Place roast in skillet and sear until well browned on four sides, 1 to 2 minutes per side (total of 4 to 8 minutes). Transfer roast to carving board and spread 2 tablespoons flavored butter evenly over top of roast; let rest 15 minutes. Remove twine and cut meat crosswise into Â½-inch-thick slices. Serve, passing remaining flavored butter separately.

Funny you mention that. I have a patient who's much younger than her DH, also, and his kids weren't always the nicest to her - but when the skids had their own children, SM took the place of their own mother. She said, "I guess they figure it's been over 30 years since their mom had a baby, and only a few for me, so I'm the want they want advice from and to watch their babies..." But, I could totally see them saying, "Dana, Daddy's going to take us all out to a nice dinner - but that restaurant isn't right for the babies, so we'll be dropping them off for some stepg-ma time w/ you for a few hours!" and expecting me to throw a party and enjoy it all... In our situation, BM has told the girls she's moving back to CA when she retires in a couple of years. That's another odd move if it happens. I mean, the girls have been gone in college for years, finally move back here, so you want to move to the other side of the country? Weird. I'm afraid I'll be the MIL from he!! who moves in next door to my boys and their wives....lol. Right now, I'm dreading any 'marriage' situation w/ the SDs. The 22 y.o. who's living w/ the bf is my worry. I love the bf (more than her by far), but I want to somehow work into a conversation that today, when you wait til you're settled to marry, you can have any type of wedding you want 'cause you can foot your own bill! Hint, hint, lol. I'm not opposed to doing something for her, should we ever have $ again, but I'm envisioning the princess for a day/weekend type of event that DH will suggest we sell the house for...and, I actually do believe in the days of the distant past, the bride's family DID foot the bill as their DDs needed to be taken care of, had no careers, and married in their teens. I married at 33 and made more than my parents combined, so there was no way I was having them pay for our wedding which was kind of large to include many of our colleagues, etc. Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for me that there is no upcoming engagement... This is in my backyard. It's getting too touristy though. Notice the green fields. We have had the wettest year ever in history as well as the wettest month (September). You probably had some rain. In fact it's raining now. I know what restaurant you're talking about. I am 100% German with both sides settling in Lancaster County in 1709, but I don't like German food very much. Of course I grew up eating it but never make it myself. I do miss my mother's chicken and waffles and chicken potpie. My son likes shoefly pie which most people out of the area never heard of.

House inspection today didn't go so well.

Today was our home inspection and everything was pretty minor until we went to the basement. There are 2 main issues..... 1 being the oil furnace didn't turn on- could be because its out of oil so we will be having the seller (hopefully) bring someone in to service and check it and also someone to fill the oil tank. 2 being plumbing issues. The kitchen sink, basement utility sink and washer are all hooked together and being drained straight into the sump pump. Which is a big issue. Anyone have experience with this plumbing issue and how much it would be to redo the plumbing? Hopefully again the seller is willing to repair. If not we might have to walk.

My daughter lived in NH for about 3 years. I loved visiting. There was a market near her place that had the most wonderful, authentic Italian food! Then there is the famous burger joint that deep fries the hamburger and has never changed the grease in about one hundred years or something crazy like that, only added to it. It's quite the unique experience. I'm sure you could find it on a Google search just to read about it. It is usually near the top, if not the winner, of many hamburger ratings!

Jae, perhaps you're thinking of Dartmouth? Yale is in CT. In any case, I won't be eating anywhere but on campus. I've read the menus, and every meal is fabulous--no exaggeration! And if the wines are anything like last time, they'll be remarkable too. :-)

I'm certain, Alisande! I visited there several times and had a granddaughter born there. Her husband was doing post-doctorate work at Yale in neuroscience.

This is the place. It is known as "the birthplace of the hamburger".

I think NH = New Haven, not New Hampshire in this case.

I stand corrected, Jae! I was confused by the NH reference. Louis' Lunch has that charming, old college town look of antiquity. I still won't be lured away from the reunion menus--probably just as well, considering what a deep-fried hamburger would do to my arteries. :-) Thanks for the link!

If so, it was the stress of my recent tick bites! That stress has been considerable--both the emotional stress and the stress to my immune system. The trip itself was a source of happy anticipation, remembering what a great time I had reunioning with Joe's class five years ago.

I didn't realize when you went to Yale. That is very impressive. My daughter and I visited when she was applying to business school. We went to Frank Pepe's Pizza in New Haven which is famous and the pizza is to die for. DD went to Dartmouth and never did go to business school.

Fran, please don't be impressed with me . . . it was my late husband who went to Yale (undergraduate and graduate). I'm much less impressive! LOL

His class generously pays the reunion fees, including accommodations, for the widows. The classmates feel that having the widows attend completes the class. It's a very nice gesture. I took advantage of it five years ago and had a wonderful time.

Dartmouth is another excellent (and beautiful) school. I'm impressed with your DD!
