I love my heated mattress pad, and will be putting it on my bed soon, I'm sure.

My biggest tip is to stay close to the woodstove! :-)

I have a heated throw...half the price of an electric blanket...auto shut off..I turn it on just before bed...and go to sleep..and doesn't over heat my husband.

Can be taken to the couch too.

In the Spring we had new vinyl siding, windows and roof put on..what a huge difference!
The house was so much cooler this summer..can't wait to see the difference for the winter.

Long underwear! It is very cozy to sleep in it. Also, love my oversized and very warm bathrobe. Finally, my two cats who snuggle with me.

I love thick fuzzy socks.I wear them constantly when I'm at home. And layers. I only use the heating pad when I can't get warm. When I do, I start by sitting on it! So it's my rear, followed by my feet. When I get those two warm, I stay warm. Hot cocoa is nice sometimes. Mmm. We put different spices and extracts in it to change it up. I like almond extract in mine and he likes peppermint.

All good suggestions here. When I had my broken leg and sat at the computer a lot, I put the heating pad flat on the floor and rested my feet on it.

Those lightweight, thin fabric underwear things are fantastic for retaining body heat without bulk. Some are like men's undershirts and some have long sleeves. Cuddle Duds might be one brand.

Our house is not hard to heat and most of the time we heat with a fireplace insert on the lower level so I have no problems keeping warm. I never wear sweat shirts or pants, too warm. My heating pad is used more for aches and pains than heating to keeping warm.

I use a rice bag that I heat in the microwave to warm my feet when I go to bed. By the time it has cooled off my feet are toasty warm and stay that way. I also have a fleece blanket on my bed that keeps me toasty too.

What are they like and where can you get them? My daughter has Raynauds and it could help her a lot.

I got new windows this summer and can really tell the improvement. Kept the house cooler in the summer and over the weekend, when it was so cool, the house stayed warmer. In winter I wear sweats around the house and, if it is really cold, I wear a CuddleDud top under my sweatshirt, I wear socks and slippers. Last evening I was cold and fixed some hot chocolate. My new fleece robe from LL Bean will be arriving later this week.

Alisande, there are hand warmers you can slip inside of your mittens. My friend with scleroderma is freezing all the time and uses those.

I always wear socks to bed on chilly nights. I like the bedroom cool. I just snuggle under my down comforter. I refuse to be cold, so I keep the heat up (like 70F) during the day. If I get cold I cover up with an afghan that we call the magic blanket. As soon as you pull it over yourself, you fall asleep.

Dedtired, I meant I wish I had something to keep my hands warm indoors. Even just peeling a carrot can have nasty consequences. Hard to do it with mittens on. :-)

We keep the thermostat low, and use the fireplace or small space heaters to just warm up the room where we are during the day.

And, of course, I do the usual--wear layers, warm fuzzy socks, etc.

but my favorite? Is my old English foot warmer. It's a pottery jug with a screw top--you fill it with hot water from the faucet, and it stays hot for quite a long time--usually over an hour. Much better, IMO, than using a plug in appliance. I've had it for over 20 years now, and use it all winter long. I fear and dread ever breaking it, because I've looked, and cannot find any others (I have a SIL who is always cold, and I've tried to find one for her)

How do you use them? Do you set it at the foot of the bed under the covers? Aren't you afraid the water will somehow get out?

Just home from a cold wet trip and found a "butt warmer" at Costco along the way. A cushion that has a insert that you put into the microwave (or freezer overnight for cold) for 2 min each side, insert into cushion and keeps you warm for quite awhile. Can't say it was as comfy as it could be to sit on, but I would love to have been able to attach it to my back. It has handles, so it would be great to take to an outdoor game or parade at Christmas time.(it has a gel feeling like substance in it, like some of the "ice wraps" you would use to 'ice' a injury.)

I'm an LLBean customer, too....for their long silk underwear (which I love to wear to bed) and shearling lined slippers. I buy flannel sheets from them, too. I'll put my electric warming blanket on when it gets really cold.

I'm a big consumer of different herbal teas and coffee substitutes like Pero or Dandy blend. I'll also hop on my stationary bike to get the blood circulating!

Alisande, could you peel cold veggies under a small stream of warm water? I do that myself, sometimes. I'll put a colander in the sink to catch the peels.

Warm foods, cooked cereal, hot drinks. We planted deciduous trees to shade the house in summer and then the leaves fall for good warmth from the sun in winter. Open the drapes to let the sun come in. If you have a clean cycle on your oven, do the cleaning on a cold evening when the extra warmth is welcome. Close the register and the doors in the unused rooms, especially fellow empty nesters. We cut down a few trees in our yard the last few years, and now we have several cords of wood curing. Wool socks for cold feet at bedtime.

We don't have a problem staying warm in our apartment. I was told there is some kind of flowing water beneath us, and the floors stay warm all winter. It's not part of the heating, it's just a natural thing. In fact, sometimes it's too warm to sleep even in the winter. We have ceiling fans going year round here....in Colorado!

It's a teeny tiny apt....no patio or porch, and we COULD afford to move to something nicer, BUT...those warm floors in winter keep me here.

Jean, that's fascinating about your 'thermo heated' floors! I would sure try to find out what the source of the heat is. Is there a hot spring somewhere?

Graywings--yes, the $45 one is exactly the one I have. it's not 'vintage'--I bought it new about 20 years ago--at an outlet center. For FIVE $$$$.

No, not afraid of it leaking. It seals well. I did have the gasket replaced on it a few years ago, to be on the safe side, but as I said, I've been using it for decades with no problem. I usually use mine when I'm sitting doing something like reading, watching TV. Don't take it to bed with me. We've got apillow top mattress--those things are like furnaces, once I'm in bed, I'm generally too warm no matter what the temp.

I keep the thermostat on 73...keeps me warm and toasty! HAHA!

I like the alpaca socks that I get at the Christmas craft show each year. I wear them out because I use them pretty much all year round at home. So I get a new pair each year.

Second on the long underwear. Also good wool socks like the ones they use for hiking.

Wearing Layers - I wear Cuddl Duds starting in mid October. They are the best thing ever!

Wearing DRY socks - if your feet get cold part way through the day, take off your old socks and put on a clean pair. It's a proven fact that your feet sweat almost a half a pint of water a day. If your socks are damp it allows heat transfer and thus your feet are cold.

Socks,my chenille robe that I've had for years,my heated thro for watching tv and doing my cross stitch.For my bed I just put a quilt on it.I don't like to be too warm while trying to sleep.In fact the ceiling fan in my bedroom runs all year long,and I keep the bedroom window open about 6" all year as well.
