Do you remember this magazine?

Grit. It's back again. In my growing up years Grit was a tabloid sized newspaper published weekly in Williamsport, PA. It's content was of only feel good articles, and little snipets of rural living. There was a children's page, recipes, how to's, etc. I delivered it in my town on Saturday morning's to subscribers who eagerly waited for it each week.

I am happy to see Grit again, now in magazine format, but still with the same theme. It is now just bi-monthly (6 issues a year) I subscribed and have now read through 2 issues and am very pleased. Check it out.

Yes I remember Grit well. That would make a nice gift for mom for Christmas.

I've seen it in stores, but didn't know it was one that used to be around.

Yeah, I used to buy from T & M but generally the seeds I wanted most seemed to always be non-viable. I believe that of the many things I tried from them only about half ever grew and then got some very poor germination rates. Finally stopped ordering from them. George

I took advantage and get about 8 different ones but I'm not renewing any of them. Even All YOu which started out with lots of cents off coupons has been a big disappointment. I take my address off them and take to the laundramat. I get a lot of offers from Amazon

Yes, S&H stamps were worth cash. Years ago Chicago had a trio of brothers who were infamous burglars. Pops Panczko was one of the three -- famous for being arrested over 200 times. I can't remember if he ever did serious time, but he could break into any safe. One of his memorable statements to the press was, "I'm a teef! It's what I do." Twenty years ago I knew a younger gal, Judy, through a service club. She was much younger than most of the group's members. One day the topic of Green Stamps came up, and some of us were reminiscing about them -- much as we are in this thread. Judy was all ears. "So *that's* what it was all about," she said. She remembered sitting at a table with her siblings, required to paste green stamps into booklets. It was endless. There were hundreds, thousands of the booklets. It was, "Don't ask. Just DO it." Judy's uncle was Pops Panczko.

I often think about squirrel and her photoshop generosity. I think she decided to turn her skill into a business. I hope it worked out. There was a poster that lived in AZ and had health issues. (Eileen?) Her posts were very polarizing but I occasionally wonder if she is well. It's interesting that some people seem to get obsessed with this site, post like crazy, bare their soul and then vanish.

I remember getting that paper on Saturday. I also remember Capper's Weekly. I don't think we got both, so Mom must have alternated her subscriptions.

I think the same publishers owns both - and they are published in Topeka, KS now.

When my husband was a little boy (he's 62 now), he used to sell Grit. Back then it was sold house to house. We were just talking about that yesterday. I will have to tell him about this.

I had forgotten all about that paper!! I even remember the name of the gal who sold it....Martha. Thanks for restoring a good memory. I'll have to look for it. That was a paper that I loved to read as a child and it was safe to allow me to do it.

I don't know why but I knew this post was going to be about Grit before I opened it.

My best friend when I was young used to sell Grit. That was about 30 years ago. I had never heard of it before or since then, until a few months ago I read something about it.

My brother delivered Grit when we were kids. I loved the magazine. I subscribed last year and was deeply disappointed in it. Not the same magazine at all anymore and a waste of the money I spent on it, in my opinion.

Oy my yes I remember Grit. The paperboy would come on Sat. night and leave it on our enclosed porch. We would put the money in an envelope and leave it out on the porch for him. Can't remember if it was 25 or 50 cents. My Mom and I would read it from cover to cover. We loved the serial stories in it. I sent for many corchet patterns from it and after being read I would clip pictures, saying and short articles from it. We certainly got out moneys worth.
A number of years ago I picked some up at a garage sale and it just wasn't the same.

Last year I did see a magazine in a store called Grit and wondered if it was the same one. I just so happen to be going back to that store on Monday, may just have to pick up a copy.

Hey Folks --

GRIT changed to a glossy magazine format in September 2006. It has been published continuously since 1882, and is the same GRIT as the various newsprint versions over the centuries.

Oh, I used to love reading the Grit. It was sold door-to-door on Saturdays where we lived too. Like so many of you I read it cover-to-cover and couldn't wait for the next issue. What grand memories this brings back.

I used to subscribe to Mother Earth. Loved that magazine.
Wasn't published monthly.
