I totally loved the costume I made for Lori. When I bought the fabric, the sales lady asked how much I would need. I measured Lori's height, and gave that to her. :)

Then when I got home, Lori laid on the floor, on the fabric and I cut it out.

WHen my DS, Eli, was in kindergarten I was a single mom with limited resources. I made him a dinosaur costume from a yellow hooded sweatshirt, green sweatpants, and red, green and brown pieces of felt. I made a stuffed tail with spikes and spikes for the hooded sweatshirt out of felt. I cut out circles of felt and sewed them on the hoodie and pants. The inspiration was a fabric dinosaur mask he picked out that only covered his eyes. When he saw that mask he told me he wanted to be a dinosaur because he loved dinosaurs and could tell you all about them. So I ran with the idea from the mask we bought and transformed it into his costume. He loved that costume and wanted to wear it every day after that. After Halloween when he wanted to wear it to school again I made a deal with him....I said, "You can't wear it to school again, but when you come home you can." So he wore it every single day for over a week.
As a matter of fact, DS and I were talking about that costume just this past week. It's stored in the attic, and he said that when he gets married and has kids he wants them to wear it ;o)

I was a gypsy/fortune teller once. I wore a frilly skirt and blouse, lots of makeup, hoop earrings, a ring on every finger and bangle bracelets. I wore a scarf on my head and several pinned to my waist. I read palms and told people their fortunes. It was fun.

My favorite is an elephant costume I made for DS#2 and dinosaur costume for DS#3. I bought the pattern and it was to be combined with warm ups. I got grey warm ups and made the head piece which had a stuffed truck, and big ears, and a tail. For the other one I got purple warm ups and made the head piece and spikes on the back and a long tail. They were darling and I know I took pictures, but I lost so many photos during my divorce.

My favorite for my kids is a raccoon costume my DH made. DD wore it for her 3rd Halloween when she was 2 1/2 and DS wore it two years later at the same age.Back then there weren't a lot of toddler patterns available like there are now. DH was very adept at taking a basic pattern and making up whatever I imagined. Later I started to sew some of their costumes. We always did home made costumes. We chose for their first 3 Halloweens from the ages of 8/9 months through 2 and a half. After that they told us what they wanted to be. When DS was 3 he announced he wanted to be a puppy dog. With spots and they had to be brown spots and the puppy dog had to have long ears. LOL Such memories. :-)

The Halloween after DH and I got married I was working in a party store, the company made their sales year based on Halloween. I had worked there in college, too. All employees had to dress in costume every day of October. It was fun b/c we got a "budget" of store products to write off and use. SOOO, one of my costumes that year was a pregnant nun (sorry if that offends). Nun costume w/a balloon under. I will say, be careful about nun jokes, there might be divine payback.... by Thanksgiving I was pregnant and sick as a dog! LOL!

A few years later, that child was 3 and we asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween. DH said "the scariest thing you can think of." He said "An owl." He had a fear of owls, go figure, so it was the scariest thing in his mind! LOL! But he stuck with it, told everyone he was going to be an owl for Halloween. So I got out my glue gun, a brown hooded sweatsuit, some cardboard, and hundreds (maybe thousands!) of feathers from the craft store. When I was finally finished, we tried it on him, brought him to look in the mirrow, and he burst into tears!! Scared himself!! He did get used to it, though, and was a fine owl by trick or treat.

My favorite costumes that my kids wore.... back when they were about 10 and 12 (or somewhere in there) they dressed as mimes. All in black with white faces and hands! I have a photograph somewhere of them 'acting up' in the kitchen. I just loved those costumes! If I ever run across that photo, I'll post it!

Here's DD a long time ago in a cavegirl outfit DH and I made. The outfit and boots were made from faux fur and she wore a bone in her hair. DH and I had worn cavepeople outfits to a party before we were married, DD's outfit was made from one of those.

My two older sons were about 6 and 9 (now they are 29 and 32).
We had taken them to a fancy restaurant and they thought it was so cool. The next evening, they dressed themselves up as waiters and made moustache's out of paper. The funny thing about it was that they cut the moustaches out crooked so that one side was longer than the other! Then, they used accents and pretended to be our waiter. I ADORE the pictures of that day.

My kids loved playing dress-up. I can't remember how old they were, but DS had to be at least 4, because we were in this house. DD was Maid Marion and DS was Robin Hood, complete with brown tights and green "shirt" with a felt hat. I wish I knew where those costumes were. They probably wore them to death! I went to the fabric store and raided the remnants/clearance tables. I made most of their clothes then, and all the Halloween costumes. DGF made her DS a potato bug one year. I can't remember what her DD was that year, but that potato bug was so cute! He just was fascinated by them, and that is what he wanted to be.

One year, as a teen ager, I dressed as a hippie. I had long hair, so I combed it so it pretty much covered my face and tied a strip of fabric around my head, dressed in my bell bottom jeans and an old shirt. I had one of the neighbors soooo stumped as to who I was! And she really should have known! I don't think she ever figured it out.

You know what! That was so long ago that I don't remember!

I remember a crepe paper witch costume when I was probably 8 or so. This was in WI and it was cold so I wore it over my bulky clothes. I remember hearing it ripping more and more as the evening wore on. A whole herd of kids would t&t together, no adult supervision, and we had a total blast until someone lobbed a pumpkin and it hit a car and the man chased us down. lol

I also was a Flower Child when I was about 10, wore a Hawaiian shirt as a dress and had flowers painted on my cheeks. I remember a boy's mom telling me how cute I looked. Funny what you remember, huh? It was David Newton's mom. lolol It must have been a warmer year or I would have frozen to death!
