My parents have a dishwasher and they often use it when we go over. (They don't when it's just them). They like me to load it.
I told them they don't need to rinse but my step-father is a stickler.
Even if he washes the dishes by hand he rinses the dishes enough beforehand that they are perfectly clean.

Depending on when the dishwasher will be run, I rinse or not. Yesterday I loaded the dishwasher, and ran it right away. I didn't rinse a thing, and they came out sparkling, even the casserole dishes.

I do rinse them a bit, if they won't be running the dishwasher till the next day.

I don't have a dishwasher in this house, but I'm like jasdip's step-father. I like my dishes rinsed. I just don't like gunk in the dishwater, whether doing dishes by hand or in a dishwasher. It's just a personal preference thing for me.

I rinse and they still don't always get clean. I use cascade complete with no difference

My Sears dishwasher kept breaking down. It wasn't cleaning properly. Sears repaired it, at no cost to me, but the repairman told me, to extend the life of your washer, you must scrape but not rinse dishes before loading. Lucilky I have a dog who loves to tackle tough greasy pots and such. The rest, vegetable matter and etc, gets scraped into the garbage. If I can I put big pieces into a compost pile outside. But no meat or bones.
My mother and sister, altho they do have dishwashers, do a lot by hanmd, such as pots, fine crystal and silverware. I own cheap glass and stainless utensils, so they get machine washed. I never rinse and my dishes come out perfectly clean. I think it depends on your dishwasher. Ours is top of the line (we got it on sale). I also put everything in the dishwasher including pots and pans (even the turkey roaster!). Doing dishes at the sink really makes my back ache so I don't do dishes by hand.

I too put everything that can be washed in the dishwasher in it. Since there are times I am cooking for several of us, I have been known to run it 3 times a day. I went without a dishwasher for most of my 56 years of married life and I am tired of doing them by hand if I can help it:) Yes, I do scrap them if they need to be but don't rinse them. I will also wash the crock pot insert as well as my stainless steel electric frying pan. I seldom use the heated drying cycle.

Like Marilyn Sue I use the dishwasher for everything. I hate hand washing dishes. So I don't rinse unless I know I won't be doing a load in the next day. Since there are only 2 of us at times it doesn't get filled but I run it anyway. it doesn't use all that much water compared to hand washing anyway.

Consumer Report just had an article about how to save energy costs. One thing was to not rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. They said it saved lots of gallons of water every year.

DH has a lot of old Corelle dishes that he refuses to toss.
Corelle, as it ages and develops scratches, develops rust spots is it touches and metallic item when washed in a dishwasher.
Every once in a while, he loads the dishwasher (a top of the line BOSCH, by the way) and puts Corelle in, I have to get out the scrubbie and rub those little spots that develop if they touch stainless steel.

My dinnerware, which is not Corelle, never develops those spots.

Monica that is unusual for your Corelle to develop rust spots. That is what I use and some of my pieces are really old and I have not had that problem. I wonder what causes it, something in the Corelle?

I only rinse smelly things like dishes that had fish on them if I'm not running the dishwasher right away. I also rinse egg, my dishwasher has problems with egg. Otherwise I don't rinse, it's a waste of time and money. My dishwasher is about 15 years old and still works perfectly.

It's really important to use the right detergent especially since none of them have phosphates anymore. The three best according to Consumer Reports are all tablets. Even the powdered and gel Cascade and Finish products don't do very well.

I just switched detergents because they changed the formulas this summer. If some of you have noticed that your old detergents are not working that is why. I now use Finish Quantum and it works great.

I scrape but don't rinse. Is something is really gloppy (like gravy) I will give a quick rinse, but dishes should be dirty when put in a dishwasher. It saves water and the soap needs something to work on.

We only fill up the dishwasher every few days, so I do rinse the dishes before they go in. I guess I could just wash them and let them drip dry in the dishwasher. Hmmmm...maybe I will develop that habit and save some water and power.

I scrape, but don't rinse. I agree that it depends on your dishwasher too.. some just clean better than others. I have a Whirlpool which does an amazing job... when this one quits I'll get another.

I've also heard that you should not rinse because by doing so you are not leaving anything for the dishwasher detergent enzymes to "eat" which leave you with etched plates and glasses.

My dishes are almost clean when I put them in the dishwasher because I only run it about twice a week. I'd have a thousand bugs if I didn't. I don't put my good pots and pans in it (maufacturer's suggestion)nor did I put my good china or crystal in it. Sold the china that I only used once a year and most of the crystal wine glasses have been broken.

On holidays it gets used more, and the plates just get scrapped. That works fine if you're doing them right away.

I have a pair of Dishdrawers -- seldom use the bottom one. Two of us fill one drawer with breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes -- then I run it after dinner. As sue36 said, the detergent works better if there's some fat left on the dishes. Fisher Paykel even said to add a little oil if your dishes aren't getting clean! They also specified Cascade Complete and NOT the lemon Cascade.

I scrape. Don't rinse. If you don't scrape, wouldn't you have to clean out the trap pretty often?

When I was married with the house, we only used the dishwasher a couple times a week. I would sometimes run the rinse cycle of the dishwasher, if there was some food on the dishes that would smell, or just not come clean (eggs, etc).

I wonder if even then I shouldn't have rinsed the dishes.
DH hated the dishwasher....I loved it. Would love one now.

I also have Corelle (bought in 1994 and used daily) ... and never got rust spots.

After I switched to the Finish Tablets (3 IN ONE) I often found the backs of the plates feeling like sandpaper.

I had read the directions on the container of the tablets, and it said to just put it in the regular dispenser. At the end if the first cycle I would always hear a CLUNK in the DW. I often opened to check if something fell over onto something else, but all seemed to be OK. I'm a little slow at catching on, but I finally figured out that the CLUNK was the tablet falling out of the dispenser, usually onto a bowl. So the part of the tablet that was to go into the first cycle wasn't used in the first part of the run. And each cycle was "OFF" in the part of the tablet it was using.
SOLUTION: I started putting the tablet in the bottom of the DW before starting and now it comes out nice a clean.

Most problems with dishwashers not cleaning well are due to pilot error. Most of the time the dishwasher isn't being loaded correctly. Usually the jets are being blocked. Dishwashers are different as to where the water sprays so you have to load for the unit itself.

Seldom should you rinse dishes. Scrape, yes, rinse, no. The best detergents have enzymes to eat the particles and yes, if you don't have anything for the hungry little buggers to eat, they'll eat something else. That's why some of the etching occurs, especially sensitive glassware since they're eating the glassware. Dishwashers aren't made to be run once a week. It's bad for the unit and not good for the dishes either.

If you're going to rinse everything you should not use an enzyme detergent and you should cut back on the detergent too. But if you go through all that effort to wash them, why not just put them in the dish drainer?

I had a dishwasher in the first apartment and none since except for a little non-electric countertop unit that was actually not bad, though it used a lot of water. Used water pressure to spin the rack, you put dish soap in the top and it dripped down and the heat would dry them though not unlike conventional dishwashers, cracking the door helped for drying.

I scrape, and only rinse one dish a day, LOL. The DH's Greek yogurt sets up like concrete on his breakfast bowl. We run the dishwasher about once every day and a half, depending on my cooking. It will take off day-old egg yolk, but that yogurt is a challenge if it ages!

Everything else comes clean with no rinsing, even if left for a day.
