Question about washing vs. cleaning (non-SF related)

Ok, my DH and I are having a debate.

Whenever he needs a specific item of clothing or fabric washed he says "Can you clean my shirt?" Or "can you clean my pants?"

He is referring to me doing laundry in the washing machine, not dry cleaning!

I ALWAYS say "wash" for clothes and "clean" for anything else. Like, I "clean the floor" but "wash the sheets."

He swears that LOTS of people say "clean the clothes" but I think he is wrong.

So what do you all say? I am curious! Do you "clean" your shirts or do you "wash" your shirts?

I wash my clothes, I wash my dishes, I clean my floors and house.

I remember long ago in college having to suffer through a philosphy 101 class, where the teacher decided to introduce us to desk/chair philosophification, by sitting down on his desk and asking us the question of whether we should now call the desk a chair?

My answer to him was "No, what we have here is a failure to communicate."

Another student though gave the definitive philosophical answer, "What desk?"

I think the HE machines have come a long way in the last few years, but i completely understand the frustration - my mom bought high end HE machines when they first came out and the odor issue was a huge problem, there were problems with the drains, and they did not clean well. I did a lot of research before i bought mine because we had just moved, we needed several other appliances, and money was tight. I used reviews that tested multiple appliances, including consumer reports and a few others. The Cabrio had the best reviews at our price point 3 years ago, and I'm happy with it. I guess we'll see in 10 more years! After a while i can tell it needs a clean cycle because my white aren't quite as bright, but I have hard water, so I guess I see that as a reasonable maintenance chore. After I run the washing machine cleaner I always rewash all of the whites and they look great. Compared to my old machine, I'd say the only difference is that I have to spend a little more time pre-treating stains before they go in the wash - in the 'olden days' my wasteful self would just throw in extra detergent and add an extra rinse cycle, but with this machine I do have to actually spray the stains with something since extra detergent builds up. I noticed a significant difference in performance with powder detergent vs. liquid, but it became more and more difficult to find Tide HE powder. A couple of months ago I had to buy those Pods because they stopped carrying powder at the store nearest my house. I'll admit, I'm really cynical of any kind of convenience packaging because it always ends up being a huge waste of money, so I resented buying them, but I didn't have many options that day. They actually worked pretty well - better than the liquid I remember, and my husband is notorious for throwing in detergent without measuring so we really don't go through them as fast. So, maybe liquid detergent has improved and I just didn't notice. i think you have to weigh the manufacturer's recommendation with the type of water where you live, too. Even before my HE machine I converted to 'brand name' detergent. There are only two items on my shopping list I never buy generic or substitute: laundry detergent and diapers. Tide and Huggies . . . and I sound like a commercial. I really don't think it is about HE vs. not HE at this point, it is more about research. When you go to buy, try to research each model individually, not just specific brands.

Questions about drain clean out and sink venting

Thanks Vith. I can't imagine there's anything in that horizontal pipe. It was put in around July and that's when the problem started. When I have the left sink filled with water, and the right sink (for rinsing) starts to back-fill, if I just open up the left side for a second or 2, then the water in the right sink drains out quickly. Would that suggest it needs an AAV? If there was a vent behind the wall there, under the sink......shouldn't there be a pipe coming out of the top of the house around there? (which there isn't). The utility room (with washer, sink, toilet) does have a pipe coming out of the roof....but it's not very close to the kitchen sink. We don't ever smell sewer gas in the kitchen. Would an AAV help to prevent the suction that seems to be happening with the sink on the right? I think the same thing would happen if we reversed how we use the sinks, but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure I understand about an air-lock......which sort of seems to be what might be happening. I really don't think it's a clog. Both sinks drain great when they're both open. And my husband cleaned all those pipes out in July......and most of them are new........so a clog, at least under the sink, is highly unlikely. We do have a very old dishwasher that we have never used. (We use it to store stuff in). It isn't connected to anything under the sink........but it must have a drain somewhere......... Would that be causing this funky problem somehow? Any more ideas? Thanks for your help!

Opinions vary on the "gawdawful" vinyl wood planks - obviously some people don't like it or at least don't like the brands and installs they have seen. We have it, we love it - very easy to clean, wears like iron and it actually looks quite real. Yes, we can tell it's not real wood but real wood in addition to not being a good choice for your home also would have cost us 10x more, since I was able to install the vinyl plank myself. It was so inexpensive that some day we could replace it with real hardwood if we get the budget and want to. Around here if you expected anyone to deduct off the price of a home because you didn't like the type of flooring you'd be laughed off the lot. I hate carpet far far more than our vinyl plank floors but we didn't get a price cut because our home was carpeted when we bought it. We just ripped it out and put in the vinyl. But any future buyer who doesn't like it doesn't even have to bother pulling it out and disposing of it, It would be easy to carpet over or lay another floor directly over, so resale is not an issue. It is quite waterproof when installed with tight joints, the vinyl planks squish up against eachother and form a tight seam. We've spilled puddles of water in the kitchen and had stray ice cubes escape the dispenser to melt off in corner and be found later - no damage. To ensure waterproofing in your case, you can apply an adhesive or clear silicone to the edges of the planks as they are installed. I am sorry your kitty is stressed with the situation and I am glad to hear that you are committed to her despite the issues. Since you're certain it is behavioral (and hopefully that means you are feeding exclusively wet food to avoid idiopathic urinary tract disease which is associated with dry foods) Is there any way you can separate the cats in your home? You can also provide retreats - there are cat flaps activated by each cat's microchip number which can be used in interior doors to selectively exclude cats for example from scaredy-cat's litter and/or food area, strategically placed cat towers, getaway routes etc. Litter boxes in every room - that may sound unappealing but they can be disguised inside furniture, and better that there is a litter box in the room than the cat using the floor as the litter box! Also another medication to consider is amitriptyline - usually more effective for cats than prozac, and can be formulated in a transdermal ear cream dispensed in a felt tip pen from Wedgewood Pet Pharmacy, since many cats won't eat these pills in a pill pocket etc and pilling a cat daily doesn't exactly help with the stress situation!

Pat..LOL...you may regret asking...the boys are well and looking forward to summer vacation, Tim has consistantly gotton all A's this year in gifted classes...Anthony, the youngest does all A's , but he thinks he's employed by the school system and tells everyone what to do and how to do it. My hubs is....physically doing ok, mentally he's a pain where a pill won't reach..some days I'm ready to pack his stuff..he's got to be the most difficult man on earth. Amiee is so-so. Found out a few days ago her pain management doctor at Childrens hospital Pittsburgh won't be able to see her after July do to her age..Hospital admin. Is breathing fire down this doctors neck about treating kids over 19..big problem for us since it means educating a new doctor providing we can find one to see her. Its a shame since her current doc has been seeing her for 13 years and has worked a lot of off time learning about Amiees condition. I'm going to start searching next week. Our main sewage pipe had a clog...and we found a crack in several pipes soooo the digging has begun to lay all new pipes....my dog was seriously ill/hurt but thankfully recovering, Other than that all is just great in my shanty... Pat how about you, you must be hurting lugging all that water...how's your hubs doing? I think about you and him daily. His chemos are over????

? May be a regional difference. I say I need to clean my clothes. Why is it that we say we have a basket of "clean" clothes but don't say we've "cleaned" them?

I also say "I need to bathe" or "I'm going to bathe" instead of "I'm going to shower" or "I'm going to take a bath".

CLEAN:
â¸ verb: make clean by removing dirt, filth, or unwanted substances from.

WASH:
â¸ verb: cleanse with a cleaning agent, such as soap, and water.

In Kentucky we Wash Clothing and Clean the house. Maybe tell him to Clean his own Pants...Just kidding. My DH says funny things too. He will say "his eye is burning off" if it gets something in it or something like that. It cracks me up.

Could be regional difference, like silverswood said. English is not my first language so I certainly am not an expert but I personally do not know any native speaker who says "clean my clothes" unless they refer to dry cleaning. I also do not know anyone who says "bathe". I live in Midwest. He isn't British or Australian by chance? It is amazing to me what different phrases they use in UK.

I wonder if it's regional dialect. My SD15 also says "clean" for washing clothes. She lived her first 5 years here in Michigan, but then the next 10 in North Carolina. We say wash clothes, clean the house...here in Michigan.

If I use the broom to sweep, I am cleaning the floor. If I use soap & water with a brush, I am washing the floor. (if it's just a damp sponge or rag mop, I am mopping the floor)

If I am washing clothes (isn't it called a washer & dryer?), they ARE getting clean but I am still washing them. When they are folded, they are clean clothes, not washed clothes. When they come out of the 'washer', they are washed clothes.

I wash my car and then it is clean. (that's on the outside) but if I am vacuuming the carpet or dusting the dash, then I am cleaning the inside.

None of this really matters since I let my husband do all the cleaning anyways. He lives for straight lines in carpets and spot free glassware. I let him knock himself out while I relax and watch my shows in DVR!

I wash clothes, but then they are clean. I clean the house. I wash the dishes. I also wash the exterior of the car but clean out the inside. Native West Coaster.

I can assure you that British and Australian people wash their clothes. If I was to "clean" clothes, that would be a surface touch-up.

I say, clean my house, wash my clothes, and dry clean other clothes.
And my husband also has Learned...lol. so say wash the dishes and not Clean the dishes.
Yup....give him a mop, and show him how to clean the clothes...hehehehehelol.
You know as long as you can understand what he means its ok.
I used to ask my brother to pull the plads down. Now he understood what i meant. Pull the shades down. My hubby looked at me in confusiong when i asked him once to pull the plads down. He said...its close the blinds...lol..

Here in CA we wash clothes, dry clean clothes, clean a house or floor, wash dishes, wash windows, do laundry. Clean clothes means clothes that are already laundered or dry cleaned as in not dirty.
