What are your two greatest fears?

What two things do you fear most, one physically and one mentally?

My physical fear is of driving under train tracks. Makes my body ice-cold. No known reason, it just does.

My mental fear is disappointing my family. Even though I have done extremely well for myself I always value their opinion.

Physical is heights. I am fine with height if I am enclosed in something roller coaster car, gondola etc. but I simply cannot stand at a lookout point and enjoy the view. My heart races, I go into pure physical panic mode.

Mental would be having something bad happen to my kids. Even though they are grown I still worry about them. Raised them to live life their way but I don't want to outlive them.

My no 1 is not getting a kidney,then I would quit dialysis,and push up daisys,the other Igot a few,dark,being alone nights,certain dr apps.trains,

We have so many great finds,the best is my storage shed. Wayne was working on a job,building a generator plant,they kept their welding equipment in it, built on site,cost to build it was about $1,500.At the end of the job, they were going to bulldoze it down,now this is made out of 2x6's and 3/4 in.plywood. He asked his boss it he could have it, he said yes, but it had to be gone by the weekend, so, Wayne hooked up the trailer,brought it to work with him the next day,and that night, be came down the drive way with a very nice building on the back of the trailer.We put some cedar siding on it to match the house,and i use it to store all my rakes and other garden related goodies. He also was able to get for free,these long per formed red brick slabs, they use to make walls around construction sites,they has a skid left over, it cost to much to send them back, so they were going to dump them, they are now the floor on our pergola. Last year, he was working at a hospital,building a sub station for the hospital,they were re-doing the grounds,that were already beautiful,every day he would watch them just rip out the plants, and throw them into a dumpster,one day they were ripping out grasses,so he asked k=his boss if he could have them, boss man said he would check with the hospital,cause ya can't just take things from a dumpster,(yes,really)hospital said yes, so he brought home 6 huge clumps of grass,and 4 shrubs.The next day, they were ripping out the trees,again he asked boss man, could he have them,he said yes,hospital said yes, landscaper said NO!!!! He told his worked to make sure he ripped them out,and dumped them in the dumpster,so no one could get to them. Landscaper went to new job,one of his workers, came over,asked Wayne h if he wanted the tree, he would load it into his truck for him,he did not want to see it dumped,so they loaded it,and it growing in my yard now. The hospital said he could have any thing he wanted,cause every thing was donated to them,CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!!! After the tree incident,the landscaper made sure every thing was destroyed,which made no sense, it was not hurting him any,some people are just that way i guess. Also, he brought home 150 landscaping timbers,I will be using these this year for the edging around my new flowers beds, I really don't like stragit lines, but I will make them work some how,ha ha We are a throw away nation. tsmith, I have to agree with you. I live in south Alabama and my whole town was built because of Longleaf pine timber (if you're into history you can Google 'Atmore Alabama WM Carney'). The settlers built a railroad and a sawmill, and it took off from there to a town of over 8,000 people at one point. So, even though Longleaf pine isn't the dominant tree around here anymore, it's still "king" in my opinion. I think there's also a difference between the coastal plain the the "upper South". Folks on the coastal plain are more like to think of Longleaf pine or Live Oak, while folks in the upper South are more likely to think of Southern Red Oak or maybe Loblolly Pine.

I agree about talking to several realtors, you should also try to attend a few open houses. Let the realtors know you are willing to make some changes if it results in a greater ROI for you. In my last home the realtor saw the house a few months prior to selling, and made minor suggestions. She told us a target list price. We painted the entry/living room/dining room, decluttered, did staging, painted the vanity in the main floor bath and added a granite top/vessel sink (which was trendy at the time) as well as a mirror. We put furniture in storage. We probably spent $800. When the realtor returned she revised the price by 20K. It sold in a little over a month and we sided to a busy street. That said, provide pictures. I agree with nosoccermom, people want no hassle. Most people do not go on garden web, they want a house that is done, and/or have NO imagination. Used carpet, even if well-maintained will be a turnoff, they would rather have inexpensive tan carpet and walls than $100/yard used carpet or custom painted walls. If your carpet is not neutral and close to new replace it. Ask the realtor, but I don't think you can get money back on hardwoods unless you have them already and refinish. Watch an episode or two of House Hunters. The majority of the buyers believe granite counters and SS appliances = nice home. Some get hung up on paint colors.

I tried a few Oprah picks, but they all seemed stuck on one theme: dysfunction -- usually of the family sort or women doing stupid things, then transcending their idiocy. Very noble in intention, I'm sure, but I always feel I've been thumped on the head repeatedly with a tablespoon when I read O's choices. My list would start with Mark Twain. He can get me out of a funk quicker than just about any American writer. I would like to include Harper Lee and Margaret Mitchell, but I'm with Carolyn that only one book each makes them hard to estimate. I really like Wallace Stegner's histories (e.g., about the American West, Mormons) and biographies (John Wesley Powell). I'm not fond of his fiction for a reason I find hard to define...maybe it's just because it's fiction after I have been so entranced by his skill with nonfiction. Styron has written some of the loveliest, most vivid descriptions I think I've ever read. But gosh! his fiction, to me, is depressing. I recognized that even before I knew that he was suffering depression himself. As for Faulkner, I still say that The Reivers is my favorite -- I find it hilarious. It's entirely accessible too. I know he's admired for his labyrinthine sentences and stream of consciousness, so the 'normalness' of The Reivers evidently makes it lesser somehow in some sniffy quarters. Let 'em sniff; I'll take pure entertainment when I can get it. I liked Steinbeck when I was younger, but trying to reread his fiction is like listening to stale sermons. I didn't realize how preachy some of his stuff is. I'll stick up for Hemingway any day, though I know that many women loathe his writing (and him, too, apparently). Of the two rivals, F. Scott Fitzgerald was certainly the more elegant writer, but Hemingway appeals in an entirely different way to me. I think it's really silly to compare them, but it seems inevitable for some reason. Poets: Edgar Allan Poe (and short stories) Elizabeth Bishop (I like her prose, too.) Emily Dickinson Sylvia Plath Anne Sexton (Why are so many fine poets depressives?) Mary Oliver (she's growing on me!) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (call him corny, I don't care, as I think his corn will outlast most of the synthetics of the 20th/21st centuries)

I am worried that I will get cancer, just like my Dad did. Specifically, head and neck cancer. I don't know why, and I hope it's an irrational fear.

My other fear is for the safety of not only my kids, but all my loved ones. I have a lot of teen/twentysomething nieces and nephews and I worry about them all.

And I'm just like WC on the height fear. Ok if I'm enclosed, but I could never bungee-jump.

Physically - I have crippling anxiety sometimes, especially thinking I have cancer. It started after my mom died young of cancer a few years ago and I haven't been able to shake it even as tests come back clean. It's awful when you are a perfectly rational and logical person and yet you're still victim to the thoughts. I have panic attacks on occasion and those don't help since they feel like heart attacks.

Mentally...I'm afraid of regretting things in my life. I'm hitting 30 in a year and a half and it scares me because I feel like there's so much I haven't done, and I already have so many things I would have done differently if I could go back. I don't want to feel like that.

The possibility of my or my husband's cancer returning scares the daylights out of me. We were dx'd within six weeks of each other six years ago and are both still healthy! For that I am grateful, but the fear of return never goes away, not for a second.

Worry about money and kids is right up there,too. Ugh.

Physically - My brain tumor returning and to a lesser degree, heights and snakes.

Mentally - Fearing something bad happening to my kids and DH.

At my age, I am sort of at peace with my life. Still claustrophobic, but even that (I think) is not as terrifying as it used to be. Maybe "living in the moment" comes with age....but I haven't really been "tested" by catastrophic events.

chi83 -- Some of the happiest years of my life were between 30 and 40. Prepare to enjoy!

I cannot bear to be restrained. This may stem from unconscious memory of being restrained when I had pyloric surgery as an infant -- no anesthesia for babies back then. No spelunking for me. I have to have 'open' MRI. I'm not claustrophobic; I'm OK in small spaces as long as *I* can move. I was once over/under anesthetized during sinus surgery. I was completely conscious but could not move, speak, or swallow. AWFUL!

Can't think of another *fear*, although there are things I am concerned about.

I already have cancer. :) I'm afraid, always, though, that it will come back. Every ache, every pain, every bump on my skin, every bruise is a worry.

But I fear: Drains. sink, tub, floor, and especially swimming pool.

I fear a protracted, painful death, unable to act, with loved ones unwilling to take the responsibility of helping me die. (Dark enough for ya'?)

I've always been scared of the dark. That's why I let my dog sleep in bed with me. And I'm dreadfully scared of spiders. Also their webs.

I only have one fear,,,I fear the idea of my ex wife coming back...an activity which she dearly tried once already.

I have a fear of deep dark water, where I can't see the bottom and what's under there. I swim in that type of water from time to time and I have to really fight the irrational fears of what might be coming to get me.

I have a fear of being so ill I can't physically take care of myself. To the point of having to be cleaned up by someone else, being totally dependent on someone else. It's scary since I take care of people like that all the time. One day their life is perfectly normal, the next it's a nightmare. I also fear dementia and don't think I would hang out too long after a positive diagnosis.

I am afraid of water because I can't swim, although I love to be ON the water - just not IN it.

I am constantly in fear for my children and grandchildren, always asking God to keep them safe, healthy and happy.

To a minor degree, I am afraid of developing Alzheimer's Disease, the disease that killed my father, or a heart attack - heart disease runs in the family, on my mother's side.

Now that you brought it up..my father died of cancer at 53,
I'm now 64, but I don't think of it often.
At my age I'm more afraid of being a burden to anyone as time goes by.
I wouldn't be in some posh retirement/nursing home, don't have the means.

I have anxiety about sudden illness. I have a good friend who went with me on a house tour last Xmas and the next day she was in the hospital diagnosed with three brain tumors. Out of the blue. I worry what dumb thing my husband will do next. In 1996 he fell two stories off a ladder trimming a tree branch breaking both arms. Last year about this time , he was blowing leaves off the tall roof and fell to the porch roof, rolled off and landed on the metal basement doors and broke his back and punctured his lung.

I worry about grandkids. A sweet young teen boy the age of my grandson was killed by a car Halloweening.

As you grow older, you perspective changes as does your fears. I no longer fear death. I fear outliving my money. I fear becoming a babling idot or an invalid.

Mentally...I have a fear of my husband dying first...and I want to be the first to go...but I don't dwell on it.

Physically...something happened when I turned 60...so I avoid mirrors now...LOL!

Seriously...I try to live a healthy life style and take a day at a time but do need to get more physical!

My greatest fear is having my physical or mental health deteriorate to the point that I could not take care of myself. My DH is disabled, so he needs me and I don't want to let him down.

My greatest fear of all was always that something would happen to my son. That became a reality when I lost him in a car accident in 2006. I survived that, so I know I can survive anything!

My greatest fear is being trapped in a burning buildig with no way out. I always make sure I know where exints and fire escapes are in buildings. In movie theaters I sit WAY in the back by the doors.

Mental fear.....that I will never be told the truth. I am seeking the answer for something and I don't know if I will ever find it. Worse part is that it is something I think about everyday and it weighs heavily on my mind at times.

Samkaren, I have that same type of ghost about seeking answers haunting me. I just want to say I feel for you. Unless one has been in that situation they can't imagine the impact something like that has on their daily life.

My greatest fears are heights and bridges,and mountain roads.We have the coronado bay bridge here in SanDiego,and i remember when they were building it.I still have never been across it,and don't plan on doing so in this lifetime.So glad dh got out of the marine corps before they finished it,as we used to take the ferry across,when he was stationed aboard ship over on coronado.

I don't know where this comes from,but i've always worried about becoming a bag lady!! DH and kids always tell me that will never happen.

From time to time when i get a pain or something i think my cancer is coming back.Then i have to say a quick prayer and thank God for keeping me healthy.

Always worry about the grands and great grands concerning the worlds future for them.

It's not my "greatest" fear---but I would NOT NOT NOT want to be trapped on the tarmac in an airplane for 7 hours. That is outrageous and inexcusable!

I do share many of the fears and worries expressed here, especially being unable to care for myself.

Fire.
There is really nothing in my past to give credit, but I worry everyday about my house catching fire.
I have a coal stove burning now and I check at least 3 times bfore I leave the house...is the flue closed, is everything a safe distance away...are there any stray hot coals that escaped?
My electric is out still today I am planning on going home at 1:00 just to keep an eye on the generator thats running in my absence. It's irrational. I know everything is fine (but what if it isn't??)
I am much more worried about my cats being trapped than losing any possesions...
I also worry about who will look after me when I get old. I have no children, but lots of nieces and nephews. I hope one of them step up to care for their dear old auntie!

Dying by smothering...I was hemmoraging badly one time and the drs. had a hard time stopping it and I lost so much blood I got the feeling of smothering and had a terrible time breathing..That scares me terribly to think of dying that way!!

My greatest fears are being unable to take care of myself. I don't want to be a burden on anyone. Even greater fear is that my youngest daughter who is an addict will never live a normal happy healthy life. Satine
